vitamin K shot, or no vitamin K shot?

Not a debate, just a general conversation. I am starting this thread because I am debating to have wee dude given this shot or not. My other 3 had it, but I am really debating how nessesary it really is. Non of our boys get circumsised, so the risk of them having more bleeding from that isnt there, which is a major reason it is given. I have been doing some research and found a great artical about it...which I will include in the thread.... And I am leaning towards not having him get the injection.. Though still cant quite make up my mind...Who is going to have their baby have this? Why? or why not? Again, not a debate, no judgement, just a general sharing of views, choices, and info :-)

My son did get it since he was circumcised. Zoe will not. If we feel the need for her to have it, we'll give it to her orally at home or better yet I'll supplement myself since we'll EBF. There are sometime concerns at birth that if were to happen we'd allow the injection. If Zoe got vit K it wouldn't bother me that much (not a mountain for me to die on). We do decline the eye ointment and hep B.

Our older 2 got all the routine stuff (aside from the circ) just because we didnt think to question it. With DD we opted not to do the eye antibiotic because the first 2 got staff infections in their eyes within a week or 2 of birth any ways... The antibiotic only coves 2 sexually transmitted diseases that I have never had, or been exposed to... So the less going into her eyes the better. Wee dude also wont be getting the goop. Also with DD we opted to hold off on the hep B shot. She had to have x rays, some extra examining, and did get the vit K shot and heel prick, and we just felt that the hep vac was something we could wait on. I am planning on doing the same this time.

I just feel that there is already so much a baby goes through in their first day of life, why poke them more than they need to be...also, the less time away from mommy the better

I really never heard anything about the vitamin k shot so, this will be an interesting thread for me to follow-thanks! However, I have started looking into the eye drops and feel as though they may not be right for us this time around.

We do all of it. I love my ped and we have an awesome relationship. If she orders it, we do it.

We don't plan to do anything except the vitamin K shot. I feel similar to Jackie that it just isn't a mountain I feel like I need to die on. The other things are much more important to me. I'm GBS positive, so I'll be getting penicillin, but aside from that and Vitamin K I don't want anything else unless there's a good reason for it. With DD we did the exact same, and I feel very good about our decision.

Jamie, I do love our pediatrician, but she doesn't have rights or make rounds at our hospital so it wouldn't even be her ordering anything. I'm much more willing to do what someone I have a relationship with and trust suggests than what a stranger at the hospital suggests. :) Especially after the debacle we had with the hospital pediatrician at DD's birth. The ped didn't want us to leave because she was "too yellow", even though her bilirubin levels were within the normal range. We almost had to leave AMA. :annoyed: When we took her to our pediatrician the next day, she laughed and said, "Her bilirubin is fine! She's half Korean, of course she looks yellow!" (I think it was because the hospital ped never saw DH, and because of silly hospital rules or something they only list the mother's race on the baby's information sheet. So yes, she was quite yellow for a Caucasian baby. :P )

Harmony, Zoe will be stuck seeing whoever is on call at the hospital when we're there since we're giving birth in another city. Been told that my biggest concern should be THAT rather than any birth concerns (only 2 of the several that make rounds there is more natural friendly and wouldn't bat an eye at our weird vaccination schedule and such). Thankfully the CNMs I'll deliver with do the immediate baby care and checks (including being the ones around for the "famous three"). I know what I am and am not comfortable with and have zero issues rumpling a doctor's feathers.

I believe it. You know your midwives (and I know mine) and know they will support you. But you don't have a choice with the pediatrician. It's just luck of the draw, and they could be awful. We also have a slight suspicion that DD was given a bottle or a pacifier when they took her to the nursery to see the pediatrician, because all the lactation specialists we saw that next week said she was nursing just like babies with nipple confusion. But we never gave her anything. So this time DH and I are determined that he will never be left alone. We trust the midwives implicitly. We have no trust for the rest of the hospital staff. Hmph.

(Though I will say the nurses were very nice. There was one really wonderful nurse who was super helpful with breastfeeding. Much better than the so-called "lactation consultant" on staff...)

Yes, I know that Aiden was given formula in a bottle after he was born. Stupid c/s and stupid hospital refusing to let me have him till 2.5 hours later. Thankfully this is a baby friendly hospital, so some of my biggest issues with DS and his hospital aren't nearly as big of a concern here.
The local VBAC mama who has helped me out the most with navigating through my options here (cause we moved here and less than a week learned I was pregnant!) said that her biggest issue with the hospital was right before they left. They had one final ped check and that ped said that it was easiest if all the babies were taken to him so he didn't have to go room to room. She said she was too tired to argue. He gave their baby the hep B vaccine which this baby did have an issue with. The refusal form was magically lost. :( So my lesson? Baby is never leaving my side!!!
And DH wonders why the thought of an UBAC doesn't scare me. :p
