What are the chances...

That the tech would miss a 2nd baby on a dating ultrasound at 6 weeks??? Tonight I was using my doppler and I swear I could hear a heart rate on the left side between 130 to 150, and then moved it around a bit and heard a heart beat on the right side between 140 and 160. My husband thinks I'm nuts.... that its one baby, and at one angle I could hear it, but not get as accurate of a reading, and on the other side I was just picking it up better. What do you guys think? I'm kinda freaking myself out here lol

OH, and My great grandpa was a twin I believe, but thats the only twins I know of any where in my family history. There are NO twins on my husband's side... and I have never used fertility med or any sort of fertility type treatments...

oh jee. you never know what they can miss... considering they were off 4 weeks for me, I don't really trust ultrasound techs right now...when do you get your next ultrasound??

I wouldn't be panicking just yet. I'd try again with the doppler tomorrow or the next day. Could be that you were picking up the same heartbeat. There's always a small chance that not everything was seen on an early u/s but there's a much better possibility that the u/s at 6 weeks was correct.

Identical twins aren't genetic. Just luck of the draw. Wink

Wow, that would be crazy. I would tend to think that the early u/s would be accurate. I know the tech really moved all around to see all sides of my uterus to check when I had mine. Of course, I have heard of it happening before. Maybe the other reading is some sort of an echo? I guess it couldn't be your own heart beat because it wouldn't be that high. That is really weird though. Do you have an appt before July 6th when you could let them know your concern? If it happens again, I would put a call in and ask to have a u/s earlier in order to verify. I don't see why they would deny you that. It's just more money for them. Try not to freak out in the meantime... Smile

I do have a couple of appts before then. I also just fb messaged my regular PA (shes also a friend of mine) to see what she thinks. Depending on what she says I may just call my Ob and give her a heads up. My next appt in on the 29th I believe??? But, if she does end up wanting to do an ultrasound herself (the ultrasound machine at the clinic is WAY better than the one at the hospital where I got my first US) then she may need to allow more time for my appt...

I will try not to freak out... I just know a friend of mine that went to have her 4th and ended up having her 4th and 5th..... which were a boy and a girl... not sure if they had twins in their family or not...

Also, it there were 2 in there it would mean a whole different ball game as far as my pregnancy goes. I have had pre term contractions with my first 3... having my 2nd at 36 weeks and having to be induced with my 3rd at 36 weeks and 5 days. And, that was only with 1 in there each time. Doesnt make me very optimistic of having a smooth sailing pregnancy this time if there ends up being 2 in there...

From what I understand, you can sometimes hear an echo of the baby's heartbeat on the other side of the uterus. But... it's also not that uncommon to miss a baby in an early ultrasound. I think it's probably more likely that you heard an echo than that the tech missed a baby, but you never know.... Smile

I talked to my mom (who is a nurse) and my PA (via facebook). My PA doesnt think that its twins, but said that you never know. My mom is doubtful that its twins either. Both suggested that I just wait and talk to my OB at my next appt on the 29th. Heres to hoping that I can make it that long Wink I'm feeling better about it now, so I think waiting wont hurt Smile

I've also heard you can pick up an echo, or that it can average your babies and your HB to make it seem like two dif ones, I tend to trust the early U/S but not everything is perfect

I still hope in some weird way they'd find two in me at my next U/S!! hahaha

:lurk:
I experienced the same thing around 17 weeks with this pregnancy. I was getting what sounded like to distinct heart beats in different places. I only have one baby. I am not sure what I was hearing--echo or what. Try not to let it consume your thoughts....like I did.
