Right now we have a subaru forester and an 99 minivan that sits in the garage and is only used for for emergencies but it's paid off so we've kept it as back up. There is no way we can fit 3 carseats and still be comfortable in the subaru. Heck my dh is so tall he can't drive the car because he has to scoot the seat back so far and whoever is behind him is squashed. (he's got a work truck that he drives.) So, we were looking at getting another vehicle and with another baby coming that means we will need to get one that is bigger. works out because we often take other kids with us places. So, we were looking at a Chevy trailblazer ext. (it has 3rd row seating) Or another SUV with 3rd row seating. I wanted to just get a newer minivan. but DH is insisting on an SUV so we can still haul the boat out to the lake. So, with all of that rambling behind me.... What is your family vehicle and is it roomy for a taller person? Easy to get kids in and out? any info would be very helpful. Thanks.
We're looking to buy a larger vehicle soon. I currently drive a 2010 RAV 4 and love, love, love it. DH is driving an 11 year old Grand Am that is literally falling apart making driving unsafe. Since we're the type of people to buy a car and drive it till it dies or falls apart, we're considering having my husband drive the RAV and get me a larger vehicle that can hold our expanding family (we want at least 3 kids, I'm arguing up to 5 lol). We do LOTS of traveling (I have 2 long road trips just in the next 3 months!), so most large SUVs just don't cut it. In order to go out of town Id have to lower the 3rd row in order to fit suitcases, stroller, etc which pretty much defeats the purpose of a 3 row SUV for us. We want 3 rows and enough storage to go on a trip without losing seats. And the gas mileage? YIKES! So looks like I'll be a mini van driving mom soon (boooo!). We are looking at those that can tow up to 3,500 lbs so that we can still carry a trailer and such (our RAV 4 tows the same and it's been a necessity at times with moving cross country!). The only way I'd buy an SUV is if it was only for driving around town. Even then some of them I couldn't fit groceries in the back and definitely couldn't fit my stroller even with it being on it's side. My husband really loves the Pilot, Armada, and CX-9. We looked at TONS of SUVs a couple of months ago. He tried his hardest to convince me on one of them, but when he couldn't fit my stroller in 2 of them he stopped trying.
Good luck making a decision! For some reason cars buying makes DH and I nuts and it takes us forever to decide on something.
nuts. yes, that's what it's driving me! lol He has his mind made up. I can't use the stroller excuse and we have put our luggage on the roof when we go anywhere so I cant really use that as an excuse either! we also drive our cars till they are done. We were looking forward to the subaru being paid off in october so we would have no more car payments! btw. We always use his parents truck to take the boat to the lake and I didn't realize it bothered him but apparently it really does. That's why he's insisting on something that will tow it. I didn't realize a van might tow it. That is something worth looking into. Thanks!
We have a Maza MPV. I LOVE it. It has enough room for our 3, going on 4, kids, room in the back for a stroller or 2, and is still small enough that it gets ok gas millage. It also has electronic sliding doors on both sides which makes getting the kids in and out a lot easier. I'm not sure how it would work for a taller person since my husband is average height, and I am... not lol. Its also nice because we can take the 2 middle seats out, and fold down the back bench seat, if DH has to haul anything. I know ours has the towing package on it, but we just havent gotten around to getting the hitch. Also, it has a roof rack
We also have a Mazda MPV and I like it ok. We loved it when we had 3 kids, but it's a pretty tight fit with 4! It's on the small side for a minivan, so when we go camping or to the lake it's hard to fit all of our gear in the car. We do have a hitch on ours, so when we travel we have a cargo carrier that attaches to the hitch, and that works fine. I really don't know if we can fit 5 kids in it though. The backseat is tiny, and I still have my older 2 in booster seats. There's only like 5-6 inches between their booster seats, so not much room for a 5th kid! We have been looking at different boosters because I'm pretty sure ours are on the large side (my 9, 6 & almost 4yrs are in a Nautilus) to see if we could cram 3 booster seats into the back row. I dunno what we are going to do yet...I would really love to upgrade to something bigger, because we want 6 kids anyway. It's just a lot of moolah to make that jump!
We are the drive it till the wheels fall off breed too, but I want my kids to be safe and comfortable, especially for long road trips! I'll probably have my older two in boosters for a little longer. My 9yo is on the small side and the booster really helps position the seatbelt where it should be. He is the only one of his friends that still has a booster, but I don't care. That's not the type of thing I want to regret if wwe were to get into an accident.

Amy, car seat concerns have definitely occupied my mind too! Really irks me when car manufactures make the LATCH hard to get it or don't provide teether points! Really limits who can sit where. DH says I'm looking waaaaay too much into the future, but I want something that will last us.
We have an Acura MDX. It seats 5 in the back, although there isn't a lot of cargo room if all the seats are up. We at some point will need to get something bigger as well. Probably a suburban or something like that.

I totally agree, carseats are a major selling point for me. Even if we took my 9 year old out of his booster and sandwiched him between two other carseats in the back, he would only have a lap belt. And I am NOT okay with that. So the more I think about it...we need a bigger car. Where that money is going to come from, I don't know. But these things have a way of working themselves out.Haha. We still have 7ish months until it's a necessity.
We didn't buy our minivan until I was 38 weeks pregnant with DD #3. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!!

Right now i drive a Chevy Malivu, but we also have a Dodge Durango and I love it!! Has 3rd row seating and we can still fit our luggage/stroller and such in the back. Runs great! Will def get another Durango this next tax season!
We have a toyota sienna. i love it!! i wouldn't trade my minivan for anything but another minivan. so convienent with kids. easy to get in and out of. we have a tow package on it too.
