Looking for Home Day Care providers

Anyone have any suggestions on things I need to ask about?

I found a website, Care.com, which is really helpful, but I want to make sure my questions are asking all the right ones.

Also, anyone know what sounds like a fair daily amount? I was thinking $30 - $40 a day seemed fair, but I really don't know. The cost of the big daycares in my area are anywhere from $180 - $220 a week for his age.

Ethan has now been at 3 daycares since he was born so I have some experience in this area. The first two were unregulated and the one we just started at is state licensed. I will say that I am quite particular when it comes to daycares because I have a degree in Early Childhood Education and have worked in child care in the past.

I would ask questions about the daily routine-what type of activities do they do with the children? do they go outside everyday? do they read books, sing songs, do art, etc? how often do they eat and change diapers? I would also ask questions such as what types of food do the children eat? do I need to bring anything such as sippy cups, snacks, etc.? Another good question is do you have pets? If so, what type and do they have contact with the children? Is the person CPR and First Aid certified? Also ask how do you handle discipline? and are there other children close in age to my child?

It is important to feel comfortable with the person not only because you are trusting them with your child but it will be easier to talk to them if you have a concern that needs to be brought up.

Some things that I was uncomfortable with as a parent was that I had to call if I was going to be early, I had to knock before I came in the house, Ethan had his coat, hat, mittens, etc. on and was ready to go when I got there, and the provider didn't offer alot of information about his day unless I asked.

As far as pay we only attend part time. The unregulated providers we paid $3-$3.25 an hour. The licensed home that we now attend charges a minimum of $50 a week. If he is there under 6 hours a day it is $3.50 an hour and if he is there more then 6 hours a day it's $30 for the day. It is slightly more expensive then what we paid in the past but it is worth every penny! Ethan doesn't want to leave when I pick him up because he loves playing with the other kids and he has brought home art projects and cookies that he helped make.

Interviewing someone today. I am so nervous about this.

Part of me feels so bad like I am taking Reed away from his Papa. The daycare will only be MWF so my dad can get a job and help bring in some income to help my mom out.

Well, that didn't go so well yesterday.

She was very sweet and loving, but the playroom(s) were a mess! The toys were dirty and just looked like absolute chaos. I didn't expect things to be neat as a pin with 4 LOs, but it was bad. Also, the inside room they spend most the day in was maybe 8x8.

The list goes on;
She had 3 little dogs and 2 cats ( I don't mind animals, but that seemed excessive in combination with little ones)
Clutter was everywhere in the house and it didn't seem all that clean
She wasn't ok with me just coming by every once in a while

It made me wonder how she got such great reviews from the parent that suggested her. Like I said she was nice, but it wasn't a good fit for us.

On to try another......

I called the daycare/nursery at the church in front of our community (short walk from our townhouse) and even though their sign says 2yrs old and up, they take 18months and up! Also, they have full-day, part week available!

I took Reed to look at it and it was wonderful!! Such a good feeling there and he was so exciting seeing all the kids.

thank you for all of your help!
