BTDTs... Pediatrician Ques

What is the usual time frame for the first visit to the ped after leaving the hospital? Last time I got out of the hospital on a Sun & the ped had us make an appt for Mon. This time I may get out on Fri. Trying to plan my DH's days off... any ideas?

Usually if you are considered "early discharge", as in you leave the hospital within 24-48 hours of the birth, then they typically want you to schedule an appointment in the next day or two. Then there is usually another one when the baby is 2 weeks old. So, if you get out on a Friday they will likely want to see the baby over the weekend (if your office is open then), or possibly mon at the latest.

Yep, ours is 2 days after discharge. With DD 1 that was a Saturday and I wish I would have known better and asked to do it on Monday. Because I got charged for a weekend visit I think. I left 48 hours after birth with both.

Sorry can't help I can't remember that far back, my DD who was born in the US is 10now lol Here if I have him at home like my last DD then my Dr comes to the house within 24 hours then all my midwife visits are at home. Hey there are not many benefits to living here but those are a couple of them lol

DS went when he was 7 days old so that was 2 days after he got out of the hospital. I can't believe I actually remember that!

Wow.. I didn't have an appt for 2 weeks after DS got out of the hospital. I have a family doctor though.

Ds #3 and DD went at 2 weeks. DS#4 had one at 2 days and then another at 2 weeks. The twins got discharged at 5 weeks and had their first appt at 2 months.

We have a house call with a nurse within 48-72 hours and off to the family dr for mom and baby a week after that.

We have a house call from a public health nurse with 24 hours of discharge (inculding weekends), and then a visit with your family dr 3-5 days after discharge.

I had to go the next day I got out...DS was 5lb10oz at birth, but was only 5lb4 when I left and they didn't want me going through the weekend without being seen. I had to go a week after that too.

Thanks for all the info! I guess it will be a wait & see. Maybe we can wait until at least Mon.

It was funny... last time with DD (I had a Csect too) & everyone at the ped office was shocked that I came to the appt the day after discharge. But, I wasn't about to send my DH out with a newborn by himself. I didn't want DD out of my sight either. Wink

48 hours to check for weight gain I believe then 2 weeks for first REAL appointment with shots if you decide to do shots.

I feel like I was there every day with them checking various things - head growth, weight, blah blah blah .... I have no idea what's standard.

I had both of my kids on Monday morning, we were out of the hospital first thing Wednesday morning and then their first appointment was on that Friday. But that appointment was not with the pedi but with a nurse practitioner iirc. The first time they saw their pedi was at 2 weeks. DS also had to have a weight check(along with an appt with the lactation consultant) because he hadn't gained like they wanted at the 4 day appt. That appt was on Monday, at exactly 1 week old. Lots of appts!
