Funny Story

David is learning the fine art of parent manipulation at the tender age of 3 3/4 months.

Here's the story: Monday, he was a very unhappy baby. He was having a terrible time with constipation, and he was absolutely miserable. By the evening, he slowly improved, and when he went to bed at 8:00 he was his same old self. Because he had been feeling ill Sunday and Monday, he had been waking up at 4:00 am. Tuesday was no different. I got up to feed him and, after I fed him, he was wide awake and ready to play. I decided to use my sleep trick to get him to go back to bed. I turned off the light and started rocking him in the chair. When I did that, he started screaming like he does when he's having trouble passing gas or when he's constipated. I stood up to comfort him. As soon as I did that, he stopped. So I thought, "He must not want to be held when I'm sitting. It might be uncomfortable for him. I thought he might prefer being in his crib. When I put him in his crib, he started screaming again. I thought to myself, "Huh. I'm going to do an experiment." He was still crying when I walked over to the light switch and flipped it on. As soon as I did that, he stopped screaming and immediately started smiling. He had been trying to tell me that he was not yet ready for sleepy time. He wanted to play.

To tell you the truth, I found all of this rather fascinating. I'm proud of this little developmental leap forward. That being said, David 1, Mom 0. Wink

That IS funny. They really do know what they want. I think Nicholas is the same way. Sometimes he just wants the lights on to play. Sometimes I have to fully wake him up before I can get him back to sleep when he is screaming. Nicholas seems to know when I walk away to cry so I come back. He also hates the crib and will cry until he is in my bed. That's another issue in itself!

So cute! I love how good Gillian is getting at knowing what need she has and communicating it - her cries are getting very differentiated.
