    Default homemade baby food

So I lnow a lot of us are starting to make baby food, so I thought a thread on this would be good. What are some things you've done so far. Tips, tricks, recipes, etc...

My one thing that I feel brilliant about (although I'm sure it's been done before) is how i go about smashing bananas. Abby likes to help and i usually am one handed (b/c Kessler is spoiled rotten) so I put 1/2 banana in a baggie and let abby go to town squishing away. or do it myself. beats having one had to try to smash with a fork. Then i cut the tip of the baggie like a pastry bag and squeeze it into a little bowl. Mess free and easy! Sort of had an "ah ha" moment and wondered why I never did it before.

I don't really have a process since I have the Baby Bullet. I just follow what the cookbook tells me to do. I love it though! I've made sweet potatoes, bananas, squash, pears, and apples. You just peel the food, boil it until it's soft, stick in the baby bullet, add 1/4 cup of water, and turn it on for 10 seconds. It's done! I pour the food in the little pods it came with, let it freeze, and then pop them out and put them in a zip lock baggy. I thaw what she is going to eat in the fridge overnight. Sophia is such a pro at eating her solids now. She's a little piggy!

Great idea with the bananas! I was smashing with a fork too! Nicholas isnt really into solids. I try to feed him 3 times a day with rice and oatmeal with some fruit but dont get much down him. I am not making anything except bananas until he is more interested in it!

Kessler's not all the interested either. He eats around 1/2 to 1 banana a day. Yesterday he ate maybe 1 spoonful. We also think he may have an allergy to sweet potato, but not sure yet. Tried it last week and he ended up with hives but not sure if it was just the weather change or the food, so will try 1 more time maybe next week....kind of sucks b/c I roasted 3 and froze a bunch of it. It's one of the easiest (other than nanners) to make. oh well.

None of my kids have ever been very fond of baby food, they really just nursed until they started table/finger foods. But that didn't stop me from cooking up a TON of baby food as soon as DS hit 6 months hehe. I steamed it, pureed it, froze it in ice cube trays and then popped them out and stored them in ziplock baggies. That way they'd be ready to thaw in little servings. Sadly I ended up throwing it all out because I just couldn't get him to eat it. So I stopped trying until he showed me he was ready ~8 or 9 months. With DD I tried a little (but I knew better than to go crazy lol) and she didn't care for solids either until she started table foods around 9 months. Part of me is hoping Caleb will eat baby food so I get to make it , the other part of me is lazy and wants him to wait until table foods too, it's just so much easier!

I did the make your own baby food with the girls, and got so discouraged spending hours making salmon and various other things that they never ate. So this time I am doing baby led weaning. Straight in with table/finger food. No baby cereal no puree's I am totally excited to start in a few weeks. If he is not interested then I will leave it another month and try again.

I made some carrots and squash (just roasted and pureed), but we are only trying some cereal here. I'd love to know what other homemade baby food making mama's thought were the best things to make.

Avacado is suppose to be a really good first food. you just mash like bananas. no cooking involved. haven't tried it yet though.

Sweet potatoes and pears are really easy to make and Sophia loves them. The zucchini came out a little bitter so I threw the batch out. The cookbook says to cook it with the skin on, but I peeled the skin off of the 2nd zucchini and it tasted a lot better...very sweet tasting. She hates peas though. I tried peas again last night and she actually gagged. LOL!
