How often are you breast feeding??

My baby is 5 days old and she's a good eater, my milk supply is definately in, at full force as I am engorged to the point that it is painful this morning. My question is, how often are you feeding? The first few days she was feeding every 20-30 min during the day and every 3-4 hours at night. These last couple days it is every hour - 1 1/2 hr, never sleeping too much more and this is through the night and day. She also only nurses for 10 minutes. Ugh! I am tired and just need this lo on a schedule. Thank goodness my DD1 takes 2-3 hr naps during the day still that I can get some sleep if DD2 sleeps. The longest stretch she slept was dinner time last night for 2.5 hrs. But of course, not while I was sleeping....

Hmmm....any thoughts or advice??

At her age she should be eating every 1-2 hours anyway, so I would say this is normal. She will begin to stretch them as she gets older, but then when she goes through growth spurts it will be like every 30 minutes.

BFing the first few weeks is hard and tiresome!

I might not be the best on this one b/c it seems my babies are the exception. In the very beginning it was every 2 -3 hours (timing from the start of one feeding to the beginning of the next) but he would nurse for about 45 min at a time including diaper changes between sides to wake him back up. He also slept a lot, but had jaundice as well. Even as a 5 days old I'd get 3 hour stretches at night. However, there have been a few days with growth spurts when he would nurse and then 30 minutes later seem to want to nurse again. My main advice would be to try to get longer/quality feedings in at one time. I totally get that it's hard to do. I would strip him down to his diaper a lot of times. Also changing his diaper to wake him back up helped as well. Your LO seems like she's snacking rather than taking in a full meal. I know every baby is different, but my advice is to try to get a longer feedings.

I stopped keeping track after he was a week old and I knew he was growing/my milk supply was good. When he cries, I feed him. So probably..12-15 times a day? Can you nurse side lying? At night he doesn't sleep with me to begin with, but when he wakes up, I nurse while i'm sleeping. Then when I wake up I put him back in his bed and repeat. That's what I did with my second too because my oldest gave up naps when my second was 2 months old. So there are no naps during the day for me unless my mom helps me out.
It really helps you not be so completely exhausted.

Sounds pretty normal. I agree with Annmarie, that side-lying nursing will help you feel more rested, if you don't want to fully co-sleep. Gillian starts out in her bassinet, and goes back when she's fully asleep if I'm not asleep to.

Thanks for all the advice! I think she is "snacking" too, but she likes to fall asleep while feeding. Its hard to burp her too, she'll just fall asleep. I strip her, I change her diaper (which sometimes wakes her, sometimes doesn't)...She eats for 5-10 minutes, then shes out again. Its so frusturating. I try to wake her to eat more but she literally just doesn't want to. I can't force her to eat? I really want to feed her on demand... I just don't know what else to try...to keep her awake. I remember with my first, she ate every hour and by 3-4 months I was exhausted!! I remember her feeding herself at that point beside me, while I slept haha!! And my 2 yr old still co-sleeps...so right now I am in a different room then my DH Sad Anyways...just thought there was something I could change before this lo gets into the habit of "snack" feeding

If you have a good supply with a fast flow, and she's latching well, it's very possible that she's not snacking, but is actually taking a full feed everytime. Neither one of my girls have ever nursed for longer than 10 minutes a feeding.

Yup! Both my boys would nurse in 5 minutes or less. I have a forceful letdown, so they don't have to work for it.

She's so young that her tummy is tiny- fills quickly and empties quickly. I'm sure she'll stretch out for you soon.

Aisley eats every 2-3 hrs, and up to 4 hrs at night. But, it takes her an hour. She'll eat from one side for 15ish mins and then 30mins later have the other side. My supply is slowing down and she wants more, not so sure what I'm going to do as she won't take formula. I pump and bf so dh can feed her when I can't, and she take the bottle great, but I guess formula just tastes different. I'm still having to use nipple shields as my nipples just won't come out, and my let down on my left side is sooooo slow, and its very painful. Oh thr joys!

Breastmilk digests really fast and their tummies are tiny at that age, that's why so often Smile

I completely agree on the hind milk thing. It's heavier, more like cream so they stay fuller longer. She's so little though, she will start going longer between feeds soon!

I agree with PP, but also want to add that while most books says babies have a growth spurt at 7-10 days, my baby seemed to have her growth spurt at about 5-6 days. She wanted to eat all the time and it seemed like I could barely keep up with what she was eating. BUT, I did manage to keep up, it built up my supply and it really didn't last that long.

Good luck!
