Self dissolving stitches

I only had one but the sucker is still there and I'm 3w2d PP. Should it be dissolved by now? I'm totally healed up down there so it's really aggravating that the stupid stitch is still in. Is there any way i can get it to dissolve faster?

sometimes they won't dissolve, especially if they are outside the wound itself. It needs to come into contact with the body's fluids that dissolve foreign objects and help wounds heal.

If you are healed and it still hasn't dissolved then you likely need to have it removed.

For one stitch??? That stinks. When I had Alli my OB said I had a "scratch" (likely from her coming so fast), buut he said it ould take longer to heal if he put a stitch in than if we just let it heal on its own......same thing happened when I had DS #3, only my midwife with him called it a "skid mark" also from him coming so fast.

yep, i had a 'skid mark' and she stitched it with one, maybe two stitches. i had the exact same thing happen when DD was born- skid mark requiring one stitch. with DD it was the perineum where i had the stitch. this time it's more up front. i can't remember exactly how long it took for the stitch to go away last time but i know it did go away on it's own. i'm just petrified that it won't dissolve and i'll have to have it removed. :confused:

The threads vary in thickness for type of wound. If done with the proper thickness a stitch from a tear during birth should be gone by 20 days. If done with a thicker thread it can take up to 45, but that thickness is supposed to be used for deep wounds.

It will depend on your doctor if s/he feels like it needs to be removed or not. Technically, as long as the area isn't red and swollen then they will leave it. It will irritate the crap out of you and eventually migrate to the surface, may even become pimple like as it makes its way out. Or s/he may try to remove it like a splinter.

Personally I'd rather go through the having it removed than letting it fester into a pimple that then pops and the stitch is out. Pimples hurt for way longer IMO!

If you are lucky part of the thread will be sticking out like hair and it can just be plucked out.

yep i can touch it, nope i haven't tried tugging at it. *shudder* i might try after i get a shower (IF i get a shower today lol)

or try in the shower, don't pull too much. Just see if tugging does anything. Maybe it will be dissolved on the inside, but stuck to the skin.
