Default Newbie with some questions-- UPDATE

Hi guys! I've been stalking the board for the last couple of weeks. This'll be my fourth baby and I have an EDD of 10/21. A few questions-- although I feel like I should know the answers considering I've gone through this before.

I went to my first appointment today (8 weeks 5 days) to a midwife. We are newish in town and I've heard good things about the midwives. She couldn't find the baby through an abdominal scann so did a vaginal scan (my first time with those, ouch). I could hardly see anything and of course she couldn't get the printer to work. She asked if I was sure about my dates (yes) but swears she could see a hb. She wouldn't tell me the size nor the hb ("I'm not a radiologist." she says).

I am so worried right now. It looked like nothing was in there, just a tiny little something, if anything. Anyone else have this? Should I see someone else? She said she saw a yolk sac but I asked when it would become the placenta (again, something I thought I would know) and she wouldn't/didn't answer....

Thanks ladies, I appreciate any help I can get.

Obviously I need to update my pic and ticker-- this was for my third! I'll work on that tonight.

That's a little concerning that she didn't really seem to try and reassure you, show you anything and responded in such manner (while my OB is not a radiologist or a u/s tech, he can certainly tell me the heart rate and that everything is fine and they are very good about reassuring me). I would have definitely left there not feeling confident if I were in your shoes! Can you see someone else?

Yeah, that sounds like a terrible experience, I would be worried too (not that I want you to worry or freak out). Maybe your dr will have better news once s/he goes over the radiologist report, but at almost 9 weeks you really should have been able to at least see a heartbeat, especially vaginally. I really really hope your dr can give you some reassurance because that tech sounded horribly unhelpful. I'd ask for another u/s for sure.

Maybe you need to ask for a repeat u/s in a week to see if there's been growth. By then, you should be able to see something.

Is it possible you could be off on your date at all? Late implantation or even late Oing can set you back a week easily. And a week can make a big difference early on. The fact that there was a hb is reassuring but I would be confused too that she didn't give you a hr? I am wondering if 1- she couldn't get a good measurement it's tricky sometimes especially if they were using an older machine. I know some drs use older ones in office when they do them themselves. My drs nor my MW ever do u/s it is always the u/s tech on a state of the art machine. 2- if you are a little off on your dates the baby was too small for her to correctly get the hb, if she isn't used to doing u/s early on then maybe that's why she didn't give you a hr? I would be paranoid too even if everything is perfectly fine with the way she left you hanging. I would ask for an u/s with a trained tech or radiologist. Lastly in my first u/s I measured a week behind where I thought I was in an u/s a week later the baby gained 5 days prompting them to move up my edd, this is the 2nd time that's happened to me. GL I hope you get some answers soon.

You should never have to leave an appt feeling like your questions are unanswered. I know that with my first two, we werent able to hear the hb with the doppler at 8 or 9 weeks. I didn't like that, but they explained that that can be normal and we'd just check again at 10 weeks. Sure enough, at 10 weeks it was there.

But from what you're saying, it doesnt sound like you were given any information to work with. It does appear though that your MW saw what she felt she needed to, or she would have scheduled subsequent USes and had a pretty direct chat with you about a game plan and all of that. From what it sounds like, it did go fine but she did a very poor job of communicating that to you. I would call the office and double check and let them know that you went away totally confused and worried. I think that sometimes people do things so often that they forget that it is a really big deal for the person getting the US. I'd definitely have more in depth conversations with this particular MW to make sure you're on the same page and can communicate well before moving forward.
    Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice girls! I called to change doctors and hospitals yesterday. I just got such a bad feeling about this hospital and this place when I didn't even have confidence in them from the first appointment. If they are this bad at commuunicating, what about when I'm in the heat of labor? This hospital that I went to specializes in child birth, but they even had outdated information on their welcome packet (Your hb can't get above 150 bpm when exercising-- that was discredited almost 30 years ago!).

Anyways, thanks for the support and encouragement. I feel much better about this new doctor and they have me scheduled for this coming Monday!

Ok-- how do I change my ticker? It's changed so much since I originally set up my account that I don't know where to find it!

Good for you. You shouldn't go to a doctor you don't feel comfortable with. There's so much else you have to deal with in pregnancy. I hope you update us on Monday. Click on your ticker, and it will take you to the websie where you made it, then you can get a new one.
