Just wondering on people's opinion on this. With our second we were told not to take him out of the house for the first 2 months. That was really hard on me and was pretty much impossible since there are always going to be times that you have to go somewhere.
This time the dr's didn't say anything about not taking him out, but I'm still cautious. We want to take him out today for a quick lunch and then we have to go to the pharmacy. I was thinking of keeping him in his car seat carrier and keeping it covered with a blanket. The place we go for lunch isn't really that crowded and we usually sit away from other people.
What do you guys think? Am I taking to large a risk?
I took my preemie out a few days after he left the hospital. I kept him in the car seat and kept him away from people but I would have gone insane if I had to stay home.

Um, seriously? I took mine out at 4 days and never looked back. Of course I wasn't rubbing her all over bathroom floors or anything but with some basic common sense (like, don't let strangers touch her, etc.) I think taking a baby out in public is FINE. I would go completely nuts if I couldn't leave the house for 2 months! That's just crazy overcautious in my opinion.
Obviously that's for normal babies and normal public spaces...I'd be more careful with a baby with additional health problems or taking her to a hospital or something, but going out to lunch? Enjoy yourself!
*lurker** I'd keep baby in the carrier and make sure you wash hands really good. With my DD1 who was a summer baby, and spent time in NICU, we were out and about the second she was released..... DD2 is due in December, so i'll be super crazy about germs and we probably won't leave the house if we don't have to - too many people go out and about when they are sick and aren't thinking about everyone else they are infecting, plus it'll be flu season....def. not going to stores....

Oh Yes... we have been out and about. The Bigs have classes I have to take them to. We got to church as a family. I run errands by myself... I just keep baby in the carrier or babywear. If you babywear, people are a lot less likely to look/touch because they are invading your personal space. We just use precaution. Everyone washes their hands the minute we return home and all shoes come off/stay at the back door to minimize spreading germs through the house. I make sure friends wash their hands too before they hold the baby... just common sense precautions, but I would go insane not going out of the house like I normally do.
We'll be out as soon as possible. With 3 older kids it's pretty inevitable, anyway. With DS2 I walked to a small local beach the day we got home from the hospital (baby in carrier on me). DS3 we were out picking his brothers up from school the day after I got home and we were out at a local festival when he was 4 days old. Both times he was in a carrier on me.
I'll have to take the older kids to school and activities and will have to bring baby along. I'm going to try to enforce hand washing and not let other people touch the baby. I usually babywear instead of taking baby in the carseat because people never get in baby's face when his face is between my breasts. I'll also be BFing on demand, which should help.
