I had been having mild contractions all day, getting stronger and closer together VERY slowly from morning to afternoon. I went about doing what I usually do...made the kids homemade pancakes, did our homeschool lesson, took a shower, fed them lunch, etc. The contractions were getting more and more painful, but still very spread out, maybe 10 minutes apart. I was supposed to have a doctor appt. at 3:30 so the plan was to go in and she could check me. But by 2:30 I decided to cancel and just call hubby home. When he got home we took the boys to Ross to return some sweatpants...and on the way there I had a super gnarly contraction in the car that lasted longer than any I'd had all day. BUT I still went in with them because I just love Ross! Haha! Had a few more intense ones there, so we left and headed to El Pollo, grabbed some tacos, and then to Joe's parent's house to drop off the boys. I kept having this strange thought that I wanted to find a cave to hide in! So we headed home and my sweet hubby made our living room the coziest little cave for me...the lights were low, we had beautiful worship music playing quietly, and it was just very serene. I had my balance ball for the contractions, and with each one I would lean over onto the ball and just remind myself to relax, not tense up, and let the contraction do what it's supposed to do. It was hard to allow my body to relax like that, because my instinct was to stiffen up with each painful wave. But the music and the comfort of being in my home was so helpful, and the contractions were really picking up! We called our doula, Chelsea, and she headed over. That was at 6:00 pm. The contractions were 6 or 7 minutes apart. She got there at 7 and immediately began helping me cope with a contraction. Then the next one came quickly, like 5 minutes later. Then the next one was 4 minutes. Then 3 1/2. So after only 3 or 4 contractions she told us we should probably head to the hospital, that things were picking up very fast. The car ride was horrible. It was probably 25 minutes, and I don't even like to think about it. VERY different from being in my sweet home with my ball and my music! We pulled up to the hospital and my hubby tried to have me sit in a wheelchair so he could run me up...but I couldn't sit! I was too excited I guess! Excited that we were there, and SUPER excited I hadn't given birth in our minivan! So we all began the journey to L & D. The contractions were coming one on top of each other, and even though it was SOO painful I was smiling in between because it was so exciting to be there! I scared quite a few people with my funny labor moans...for some reason the halls were just packed with people...people everywhere! I felt like I was in an airport or something! We got there and "checked in", and they quickly directed me to a room. I was told to go to the potty and give a urine sample, so I started toward the bathroom...but I realized it just wasn't gonna happen. I headed toward the bed but didn't make it. Ended up having my next contraction on the floor, but this one was paired with that horrible yet awesome urge to push. I yelled "I NEED TO PUSH!" So they got my pants off and I crawled up onto the bed. I was on hands and knees with my big ol butt up in the air, and they checked me and said "She's complete. She's a 10." Then they just let me be. I pushed a few times like that, I think my water broke at this point but not too sure...then they positioned me on my side (after I objected to the stirrups). I started to push like mad and it really didn't take long. Once her head started coming out they would tell me to stop pushing...then push a little...okay now stop...okay go...they said they were amazed at my control in that moment! I really didn't want to tear though, so that was my motivation. After 3 births you learn a thing or two. So I pushed a few more times and out she came! TWENTY MINUTES AFTER WE ARRIVED. That still shocks me. I had a paper cut tear, which I was so happy about! One little stitch. I got to experience a natural labor for the very first time! That was an answered prayer. It felt so amazing. SOOOO painful, but I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Unfortunately my uterus was like in shock or something, because it wouldn't contract. They gave me a shot of Pitocin in my thigh and put Cytotec pills in my rump (sorry, tmi...but this IS a birth story!) and still I was bleeding profusely. They kept giving me more drugs, and finally my body responded. I don't like to remember that part of the labor. It was kinda scary. But I felt God's presence calming me, and I knew I'd be okay. So so thankful for this experience. It was so awesome. Natural birth ROCKS. I am still in awe of how God designed my body to do this! It's just beyond comprehension!
Shiloh Rose weighed 7 lbs 7 oz and 20.25 inches. My tiniest baby yet! I was in love from the second they put her on me...and I haven't put her down much since! So blessed.
Oh, she is just gorgeous!!! What a story...I lol'd at the Ross part...I would have gone in too
Congratulations on a beautiful birth, and so glad the scary end worked out without any big drama. Otherwise it sounds a lot like my birth with Faye--I just went in sooner, so the car ride wasn't too horrible. Love those NCBs! ♥
Awe... what a great story Mama! Congrats on a natural labor and delivery! What a fast delivery once you hit the hospital. Sorry for the loss of blood... They told me that after several children it is normal to bleed more and to not have the uterus respond like it should at times, but sounds like yours was more than a little bit more. I had to have two bags of pitocin/IV fluid before my MW was satisfied that my uterus had closed down sufficiently. Will look at the pics later. Great Job Mama!
