Sorry about the witch, Jackie.

Something the doc at Women's Health said bugged me. Every time I go in they ask me when my LMP is. I tell them 12/29/09. To which I get funny looks. I say that I'm nursing. Oh, they say and then ask how old my kid is. 10 months, I respond. When are you going to stop, they ask. This isn't really the part that bugs me but is this a normal question to ask the mother of a 10 months old? Is it that uncommon to come across a mother nursing her 10 month old? The doc today asked me how nursing as gone (ie mastitis, blocked ducts, etc.). I told her its been pretty smooth since the nipple pain cleared up around week 7. She said, "Yeah, many women don't realize how hard its going to be." To which, I said I wished more moms were told that nipple pain is normal and that they aren't failures. THEN she says, "Also, so many women just don't make enough milk. They need to not be made to feel guilty." Ummmmmm, last time I checked barring a medical issue most women do make more than enough milk. Not exactly the kind of thing I expected to come out of the mouth of a Women's Health doctor. Seriously, is she telling her patients this?! I felt like if I'd gone in their with a production issue she would have just handed me a bottle of formula and sent me on my way. Ugh.

Then the radiologist asked me how long I intended to nurse. I told him I'd nurse until Teagan was ready. Got a funny look for that one. Seriously?! I didn't expect my first encounter with apprehension about "extended" BFing to come from medical professionals.

Weird. It seems like you can't win either way. Formula feeding moms get made to feel like they are poisoning their children, and if you BF you constantly get asked how long you are going to do that, and get critcized ro made to feel judged if someong thinks you are going too long. . . People should just mind their own business, and not make judgements.

When I asked for help at the hospital with nursing, the LC was on vacation, and they sent me a nurse who had 4 or 5 kids of her own she had nursed. Well she came in and stuffed pillows all around me and shoved my kid to my boob and when she wouldn't stay latched on immediately she told me that some babies just don't take to it ever. Just like that she had given up on us!

Erin, that is very frustrating. I wonder how many women stopped BFing because the Women's Health doctor told them that it's common for women to not make enough milk. Good thing you never had to turn to them for help! Certainly would have been useless. Kinda like here. There's no one to ask for help, unless it's "which formula should I use?" I'm really grateful that I haven't had an issue that I haven't been able to solve myself. When I had mastitis, I walked in told them what I had and they handed me over a script. *sigh*

Christa, that's great that the problem with the nurse was fixed! Smile Would have been nicer if you didn't have to do that, but hopefully other women never have to go through what your friend did.

That's real useful.

All I had was a book on breastfeeding. I highlighted parts in it and DH was reading those parts aloud to me. When I didn't know what to do, I broke out the book. lol.

Erin, I'm glad everything is ok but i would be pretty irritated about that too!

when Lucas was born the hospital was pretty good about bfing except for the pediatrician there. He said we needed to give him formula for jaundice. Up until that point though the nurses were having me express colostrum into a little cup and pump. They also mixed expressed bm with the formula when they gave it to him. After finding out it wasn't necessary to give formula for jaundice i was pretty irritated that we had been told to do that by a ped. Especially since he was only borderline

I have an ultrasound tomorrow so hopefully it will show something!!! I'm soooooooo tired of being sick. I've had a few days here and there where it's been a bit better, but just when I think it's gone away, it comes back.

Not sure what the next step will be after the u/s, maybe a ct? The bloodwork and stool samples showed nothing. I'm so confused. My symptoms are so weird too. I have back pain with them alot, but low back pain, but my stomach pain is often up high. So weird.

Just keep the internal dialogue going of why it's best to wait. Just a few weeks of not hearing any complaints. Biggrin

mona- I can't even imagine what you are going through! I'll be thinking about you tomorrow!

so, bad news! like, pretty serious stuff. my wine dealer, the only one that I have found that carries my FAVORITE wine, has stopped carrying it!!!! WTF!!!??? I was so freaking mad! I drove all the way over there and she said they stopped carrying it because the winery didn't keep them stocked up enough. It's a little winery and there's a bunch of us that are in love with it, are you kidding me!!!??? Pretty sure the girl knew I was peeved by the time I left. I called every liquor/wine store around here and no one had it. My SIL (that got me hooked on it) just had emergency gall bladder surgery night before last so I would've felt bad calling her and asking her if she had any Smile She's okay, btw, just really sore. I'm pretty sure she, of all people, would've understood me calling for some wine.

When I was nursing DD1 past 1 year (actually, it started when she was 10 months), ALL the flack I got for extended breastfeeding was from medical professionals.

10 months old - I fell and hurt my back so badly I ended up in the ER to check for a fracture. I declined painkillers because of BFing. Drs told me I had given her 10 months, now it was time to do something for myself (ie: wean and take painkillers).
Around 14 months - I went in for my yearly checkup and told OB/GYN I was BFing. She gave me the most flack and told me that DD was just using me as a pacifier, and that past 1 year of age they get no nutritional benefit from BFing. Wanted to know when I was weaning. She also gave me a script for the regular pill (and wouldn't give me the mini pill again) and when I asked if it would decrease my milk supply she shrugged me off. I didn't fill the script.
Around 15 months went to my family dr and got criticized again.

By then I realized that I should not tell drs about extended BFing. Now that I've had lots of time to think about it, I have my come back all prepared. I'll say, "If I weren't nursing, what would you tell me to give her to drink?" I expect the answer to be "Cow's milk." And I'll say "And why do you feel cow's milk would be better for her than my milk?"

The only drs that didn't criticize me for extended BFing were my chiropractor and pedi.

Wow. That's really bad. Sad

ETA: I really wonder what a military doctor will have to say when I'm still BFing Aiden past a year. Will be interesting I'm sure. Here I see a flight doctor who knows nothing about BFing.

I'm going to call the winery, but they won't answer me tonight! Jerks! Someone should really be on call there at ALL hours! I'm pouring a Crown & 7 right now Sad I was really looking forward to a glass of wine. I will drive to where the winery is, all I need is directions!!!!

I say you remember what buckeyeK said above and use that, that was pretty good! I can't even imagine how pi$$ed I would be if someone questioned my bf'ing. The WHO says 2 years is optimal for crying out loud!!!
