I just did something I said I wasn't going to do, but I did it

anyway. And I don't feel at all bad about it. I just paid for a trip to Mexico! There are still tickets left, so I called my SIL and booked us. I'm in burn out mode around here so I'm going to take the opportunity to get away and take some me time.

I will have a drink or two for all of you....wait, that may be a bit much, but I'll do what I can Smile I'm so excited! Of course, I'm nervous about leaving the kiddos and especially Clara, but this is much needed. I thought I'd feel guilty when I booked it, but I'm happy to say there's no guilt......at least not yet.

Thanks girls.

Veronica- we leave in about a month. I do NOT have enough time to get in shape and tanned.....ahhhhh!!!!

Erin- I know it's going to be hard, I was just going to post a thread about something sort of related but I'll just throw it in here instead. We are on the downhill slide with bf'ing and while that didn't make up my mind to go ahead and go (the freak out I had over the weekend did which was not really related directly to any one thing) it is helping me not feel so bad. We've been having a terrible time the last few months. I know I've said something to Anna about it. I'm not sure if anyone else has had the same problem as bad as this. She's not getting enough for about 1 and a half weeks each month, it always coincides with me being pre-menstrual. I took a baby scale down to camp with us this weekend and we did weight checks on her after every single feeding (I'm due to start the end of this week). She never nursed and got more than 1 oz Sad One night I had DH give her a formula bottle just to calm her down and we weighed her just to see what it would say and it registered 4 oz which is what we fed her. I did the weight checks at every feeding because I know that some can be snacks and some meals, but not once did she get a decent amount. We've also been weighing her and she's still losing weight so I've had to begrudgingly start supplementing her a little here and there (like a bottle every other night). I've taken to spending extra time with my pump to no avail (my pump and I have never gotten along though). Have you ever run across anything about supply issues related to cycle times? I never have. My friend that is a LC thinks I'm crazy, but after this weekend and all the "witnesses" now thinks I'm a little less crazy. It's been going on for a while now. We spend that week and a half or a little longer with a very grouchy baby, the next week and a half (AF week) working my supply back up (nursing every 2 hours) and then we get almost a 2 week reprieve. I guess I wouldn't worry about it if she wasn't losing so much weight. I'm okay with it, just a little confused. This is about when DS weaned and we did okay with that. She's eating more food and getting pretty good with the sippy cup. Sorry I turned this into a novel, but I was just wondering if you knew anything more than I have been able to find.

Aw Christa. I didn't know you were having such a rough time. You gotta tell us these things if we're going to help you fix it! I'll go digging for info for you right now. Couple questions ... how much weight loss are we talking here? How frequently is she nursing? Are you co-sleeping and does she nurse a lot at night?

Kellymom has a little info about this

[top]
Low milk supply associated with menstruation: Calcium/magnesium supplement

Some women experience a drop in milk supply from ovulation (mid-cycle) until the first day or two of the next menstrual period. A woman's blood calcium levels gradually decrease during this period of time, and for some women the drop in blood calcium causes a drop in milk supply. For women who have this problem, calcium/magnesium supplements may be helpful. This practice has also been reported to eliminate most uterine cramping and some premenstrual discomfort such as water retention.

The recommended calcium supplement dosage is between 500 mg calcium/250 mg magnesium and 1500 mg calcium/750 mg magnesium (the higher dosage is generally more effective). Calcium dosages this high should not be taken alone, but as a calcium/magnesium (or calcium/magnesium/zinc) combination. Otherwise the calcium will not be adequately absorbed into your body. The amount of supplement depends on the composition of your diet -- the more animal protein, the more calcium/magnesium needed. If you are a vegetarian or vegan, the lower dosage may work fine for you.

Start the supplement when you ovulate, and continue through the first few days of your menstrual period. If periods are irregular, then begin calcium/magnesium at 14 days after the beginning of your last menstrual cycle, or simply take the supplement every day.

and they link to this page on which I found this ...

If there is a significant dip in supply, mom can use the usual methods suggested for boosting supply. She can also add a calcium/magnesium supplement to her diet when ovulation occurs and continue it through the first or second day of her period.

Here's another link that says pretty much the same thing:

She is down 4 lbs since her 4 month appointment. It doesn't seem like a bunch, but it does when you compare her to what she was before that and what my other two always were, chunky! She seems to have given up, she seems defeated when she nurses for what we have dubbed the "holy sh!t weeks" (the 2 and a half weeks of pre-AF and AF). She doesn't get up through the night now, but I swear, it's more like she just gave up. She was co-sleeping right up until the time that she started sleeping longer stretches. Even when she was in bed with me she didn't dream feed towards the end. I should have known something was up when she started getting so frustrated at night and I never woke up feeling full, but I just counted my blessings that she might be getting to the STTN point. I have tried brining her back in with me but she still doesn't nurse through the night. I even slept without my shirt on the week I got her back with me, nothing. The frequency of the nursing changes depending on the week. Pre-AF week it's every 2 hours. I haven't been on here hardly at all because I swear that's all I do (well, we are also trying to get DS potty trained and that takes a lot of time!). Today, she nursed every hour and a half, which was fine because DD1 is home, but she never once spits up after nursing during pre-AF week (and she's a barfer usually).

I've been talking to my LC and she's clueless. I have been drinking mother's milk tea and taking Funegreek and Blessed Thistle along with adding Brewer's Yeast to my food for the past 2 months now (ever since her weight loss at her 6 month appt). None of it is doing anything. I drink nothing but water (it's just what I like) anyway and I drink a lot so that isn't it. My pee is clear (as always) so I'm well hydrated. My LC and I have been busting our brains to figure it out. Stupid AF, I blame her!! Like I said, I would appreciate anything you get, but I've been dealing with the emotional aspect for the past 2 months (which is why I haven't said much. I felt like I had to clear my head first). I'm okay. I really truly am. I wanted to bf her longer, but it will not crush me if this is the end. I've worked really hard and given her a great start, and if that's all I can do, that's fine too. Don't get me wrong, I'm not giving up, I'm just trying to prepare myself for whatever may happen.

I'm planning to bring my pump with me to Mexico and see if I can keep up what little supply I have. Obviously she'll be on bottles while I'm gone, but if she'll latch back on when I get back, then we'll try to keep going. I know it seems like I'm quitting, and maybe I am, but we need this trip so bad.

I'm already on a calcium, magnesium supplement. I don't drink milk and eat very little dairy. My dr has had me on a supplement for several years now (since I was pg with DS), which is what my LC consultant can't figure out. That is the only thing we have been able to come across. Sorry, I guess I should've said that I knew that was a possibility. But that is all we've come across.

:bigarmhug: Wow girl, I didn't realize you were having such a hard time! I'm glad you are trying everything you can to keep bf her, but that you are also okay if you have to switch to all formula as well.

I was having supply issues as well, although not AF related. You remember what a hard time I was having w/ Luke's weight and him not gaining enough and getting enough milk from me. I went as long as I could that made sense for us, but I have also been extremely happy since switching him to all formula, and know I made the best choice for us. He's gaining weight and growing great and all over the place. And so happy! That's the most important part. A happy baby AND a happy mommy!

I'm so glad you decided to go to Mexico!!! Did I mention how jealous I am? Blum 3

Thanks Laurene and Veronica! We are going to have a blast. My niece just got engaged and we are really close with her and her parents and they are all going as well as the future nephew that I adore! So, we have so much to celebrate.

What's most important is that you feel like you've given it your all and that you're OK with how it turns out. If you don't respond well to the pump, pumping on vacation might just cause you a lot of frustration. You're going to have fun not to be tied to a pump! You can always try to relactate when you get back if you want to.

Mexico is going to be soooooooo much fun! You deserve it, momma!

I'm also so so jealous!! Have lots of fun! I'd give anything to have a vacation alone with dh!

I'm also on the end of our bf. Ever since dhs dad died, chloe is uninterested. She is even starting to refuse at night now. But shes happy, thats all I can ask for. I'm proud of myself for making out this long. You should be proud too! Bf is hard work!

Can't wait to hear about your trip!

Oh and for the BF, if you can, get a doctor to prescribe domperidone. I used that when my supply went down and it got me back to the engorged leaking stage for a bit. And I was trying fenugreek and blessed thistle too.

Alot of people will say that domperidone is not available in the US but there is ways for a doctor to get it IF he really wants to. You should take a minimum of 30 mg three times a day, up to 40 mg 4 times a day.

But if you decide to stop once and for all, give yourself a big pat on the back for going this long! You did a greeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaat job!!!

You should be proud of what you have accomplished and of all the efforts you have put into maintaining breast feeding. Wow! I am impressed.

You've done such a great job sticking with BFing for so long with obvious supply issues!
