Let's talk transitioning to cups....

Who's there? Anyone working on it? How are you going about it/did go about it?

My goal is to transition Aiden to a regular cup by sometime this winter at the table. If Aiden has a regular tumbler cup it spills EVERYWHERE. We have a couple of those cup trainers where you drink around the edge and the middle is all covered and the kid sees it as something to take apart. Mommy isn't getting down on the floor to clean up that mess right now. Blum 3 I remember as a kid having tumbler cups with the clear snap on lids that had a spout that was completely open. I think Aiden would do great with this since he does fantastic with regular water bottles and those bottles of milk that you sometimes get at restaurants. Do these exist anymore? I can't seem to find them.

Ooh, good question! We are not really there. I do let Addy drink from open tumblers sometimes (because she insists, and she does need to practice) but only with a half inch of water in them because she ALWAYS ends up spilling it so that way at least it's not a giant mess.

I haven't seen the open spout kind, but that does sound like a good start. We do have a no-spout sippy, which you could take the plug out of and use that way, though...Hm. Woah--what is this??

At home we mostly use her sippies for water (especially at bedtime) and she takes either one of those or a Camelbak straw bottle to school (apparently the hot thing since nearly every kid in class has one!) For almond milk or juice at home, we have those take-n-toss straw cups (we do not toss them--we've had them for a couple of months now and they're still holding up fine!) which she likes and mostly uses appropriately, although sometimes she does pull the straw out.

Madison is still using the no spill sippy cups because she'll just throw them down sometimes. But she is getting good about drinking from a straw in our glasses and I've gotten her a couple sippys with the straws and she does okay with those for the most part.
But I love this topic!

We have a Sassy one similar to your link (short version) only we can't figure it out. If the thing is in the cup, nothing comes out period. Ever. So then you have to take it out and that's just a regular cup. I mean it'll be useful one day when we want to bring a cup of drink with us out of the house....but right now? Not so much.
We have an Advent one like that that does work well. Only Aiden plays with the top and tries to take it apart.
Just 1/2" of water pisses Aiden off because mommy and daddy have more in our cups. Kid doesn't get he's a toddler. Lol

Straw cups were fantastic last winter and spring....but then the kid woke up one day and was lost with them. Thinks they should tip back. lol

ETA: I saw reviews saying you have to bite the rubber part....but ummm how the heck is that teaching how to use a cup properly?!

So Jackie, what you want is a spout cup with a screw on lid so he can't take it apart? I'd think any sippy with a spout would work, just take the insert out so the liquid flows through the holes faster.

Yeah, biting the rubber...fail.

Ds has been using the covered cups with full straws for awhile now. He just never wanted or took to pacifiers..bottles... Or sippies. He even drinks from a small tumbler that's open in the morning with breakfast. He actually does really well. The other day he tried to say that he just wanted water out of a regular bottle so he carried it around but then every ten min was asking for help because he couldn't always get the capped untwisted.

Olivia gets one open tumbler cup a day with water. She's slowly getting better at not spilling it all over herself! LOL Once she learns better we'll use it more. But honestly we use open cups at meals and sippys the rest of the time for DS, who's 3. We are on the go in the car too much to only use open cups!

Good point, Mel. I mean, even I use water bottles and not open cups in the car and in bed at night!

Lyla sometime gets a regular open, plastic cup at mealtimes and does beautifully with them. We do the 'just a little in the cup' thing too and then she'll drink that and then slam the cup down and say, 'juice' (Juice is whatever we are drinking, generally water) and we'll pour her a little bit more. She starts out okay with any open cup but if there's a lot of liquid in it, she'll end up pouring it down her front.

Lyla did amazing once upon a time with straw cups and then, same as Aiden, decided at some point that she needs to tip it back to drink out of the straw. For the most part she's still using her regular old sippy cups.

DS1 still uses a sippy at home. Mainly because he throws it where ever when he's done and him and Tobey share drinks and Tobey is no where near using a proper cup yet (today he spilt half a cup of juice down his front and cried about it for half an hour )

DS1 can obviously use an open cup perfectly well Smile And does do when he's not somewhere he's going to be tossing it to one side when he's half way down the cup!

Pretty much on an open cup with meals and has been for awhile, his daycare is big on self care skills and they started open cups only around 15-18 months, I'm thinking closer to 15 months though. He does well but we also only have one tumbler, I need to get more but keep forgetting, so he still uses sippy cups at time and especially int he car etc. He has even uses glasses whenn out for meals because we come across so many places that don't have a kid friendly cup. It's also only a small amount in the cup, we are up to the cup being about half full now

Right now, Evan mostly uses the straw sippy cups, or other sippys without the straw, but no spill. I absolutely hate the straw sippies, we have the munchkin ones. They are fine until the liquid heats up ever so slightly and comes out of the top, then runs down the side of the glass and onto everything!! Milk seems to be the worst in them. He also has small plastic tumblers. He does well with them as far as spilling goes, but he loves to dump it out onto the tile floor and splash. So he only gets a little in there at a time.

Ugh, I hate that too!!!!! It doesn't happen so much in the straw cups with lids, though--I guess because enough air can get in around the straw?

I let Aiden have his Advent cup trainer at lunch and dinner today. At lunch I thought he was calling me a liar on here b/c he did very well with it. At dinner? Oh lord. Kid needs a bath now. Blum 3 But gives me hope that he may be ready for them now and just wasn't up until 2 weeks ago. But just at the table. Kid swings sippys around the house. lol

I wonder if it was Tupperware that my mom had and they've just redesigned the lids since then.....

he has one of the nuby sippy cups which i love. He has open cups with a straw at restaurants, and he does pretty good drinking out of a water bottle by himself. i tried the sippy cups with a straw and he doesn't really get it because he tilts it way back to drink and none of the liquid is on the bottom so he gets mad.

Sarah, this is my kids exactly!! Lily still gets a sippy b/c she will throw her cup around, and even if she doesn't Lucas will eventually come steal it and drink out of it or throw it around. And he gets soooo upset when he spills water on himself too! It's like the end of the world. Wink Obviously Lily can drink out of a regular cup, but I don't usually give one to her b/c I already have enough messes to clean up with the 2 of them!

Teagan is quite capable of drinking from cups but she enjoys spilling them far too much to be trusted with one. I'll give her a cup when she asks for one or when the mood strikes me but she mostly drinks out of her CamelBak water bottle.
