pools

so Lucas loves his baths, he loves splashing in a little plastic pool in the backyard, but when i take him in my dads above ground pool he freaks out. The first time i thought maybe the water was too cold for him (78 ) but we went in yesterday and it was 86. he clings to you for dear life and whines and if you lower him a little he totally freaks out. It has been super hot here lately like 30+ almost every day (LOVE IT) and i want to go swimming! lol but we can only go in for like 5-10 minutes at a time because he gets upset. Does he just need to get used to it because it is a big pool? anyone else's baby have this problem?

Teagan LOVES the pool. Kids are weird. Maybe you can bring your little plastic pool to your Dad's and kinda ease him into the big pool by first putting him in the little pool, getting him happy, and then trying the big pool.

DS1 was like that as a baby. He would literally try to climb to the top of my head and out of the water. At one point we got one of those baby float/raft things, their feet just hang out the bottom, and that seemed to help a little. That was the summer he was turning one. The next summer when he was turning 2 he was totally swimming under water on his own so it was totally just a phase or something.

Odin on the other hand is a fish and would dive head first into our pool if I'd let him.

yep, we have a duck one. it makes a slight difference but he still doesn't like it.

Nate loves his raft too. I usually bring in some sort of toy and splash to get him laughing.

My kid is a freak and thinks he can swim. He doesn't like being 'confined' by a baby float. So I'm not much help. I'd just keep trying. Maybe it's because he doesn't have as much control cause he can't touch the bottom?

Its bet it is the temp of the pool. Even though it feels nice to us Im sure they dont like being cool from the temp of the pool.. I used to love livng in AZ where pool water was like bath water.. Miss that!

When Tobey is in the bath he splashes and sequels in excitement. When I take him to the pool he just sits there like "why am I in here?!?" He might just be scared of the openness of the pool when he's used to being in the bath?

I agree that it may be the temp of the pool. Simon was less than thrilled the first time he went into cold (or not bath) water.

Are you using a lifejacket? We tried putting DS in a pool with a lifejacket on and he HATED it! Once we took it off and just help him tight he had a blast.....after adjusting to the temperature of course. Smile

Try one of these with him. We take DS to the lake a few times a year and he freaks everytime we try to take him into the water just carrying him. As soon as we put him in this float he's fine. It's like his own little swimming area. We don't take him swimming near enough for him to get used to being in the great big lake.

I'm chiming in late but wanted you to know that Sophie seems to my IL's big pool too! And they went and bought her some floaty thing in hopes to help her enjoy it more, and she screams bloody murder if you put her in it... But let her put her feet in the hot tub and it's a WHOLE 'nother story!! LOL!! Lol
