What qualifies as homecooking to you? As in, some might say that Hamburger Helper is home cooking, but I don't qualify that. Where is the line between true home cooking and "just heating stuff up"?
That is a good question. When I think of homecooking, I think made from scratch. Hand breaded and fried chicken, pie crusts from flour and crisco, soups with cut up veggies and browned meat. Of course, I'm usually thinking of my mom and grandma's food when I think that way. I like to cook, but home cooking usually happens on the weekend.
If it's from the box, I don't consider it home cooking, I just call it easy and keeping you from having to spend $$ eating out.
I agree with Stacy. If it came directly out of packaging, it's convenience food. Home cooking requires fresh ingredients purchased separately and put together by the cook.
Yep, same as PP. Homecooking is from scratch. I don't consider a pie homemade unless the crust was made from scratch. We have homecooked meals 2-3 times a week and semi-homemade, or prepared foods the other nights.
I don't consider pre packaged foods to be home cooking. Hamburger Helper is up there with throwing a frozen pizza in the oven when it comes to "home made." They're full of crap that the body doesn't need. Though even I buy the occasional frozen pizza since it's cheaper than eating out.
A home cooked meal is having to follow directions and put stuff together yourself. Yeah, we all take short cuts but you're not just opening a box and throwing it in the oven or microwave, ya know?
yeah, short cuts like baby carrots vs. carrots you have to peel don't make a difference to me in being homemade when making a soup. On the other hand, a canned soup that you add some veggies to isn't homemade IMHO.
I agree too.. There can be a little of both in one meal though. I make most things from scratch but for example I'll make enchiladas from scratch including the sauce but will add a side of beans from a can as a side. I avoid canned things as much as possible but will occasionally use things like that.
Agreed--I don't think there's anything wrong with some shortcuts, especially when you're just feeding your family on a regular night. When I make a big deal about having made something myself and am serving it to guests, though, I do it totally from scratch. Well, if it has, say, sausage in it I obviously don't make the sausage...but I think you know what I mean.
"homecooking" Is anything my Mama fixes. I guess I've never really used that term much.
