Talk baby names with me!

Ok, so I'm 15 weeks and have tons of time, but I really want to talk baby names, and DH won't! So talk names with me!

My current kids' names: Claire Elaine and Alaina Lauren. Last name is H____________, 3 syllables.

These are the names I have tossed out and DH hasn't immediately vetoed. The middle names for either gender are family names.

Girl names:

Morgan
Caroline
Leah
Rory

Girl middle name: Suzanne (combo of MIL's first name and my mom's middle name) or Jeannette (my grandma's name)

Boy names:
Marshall
Logan
Evan
Cameron
Mitchell

Boy middle name: Roger (my dad's name)

I'm really much better at vetoing names than I am at suggesting names. So.... I'm going to resort to babynamegenie.com Wink

Names that I like from what the genie suggests to pair with your middle & last names:

GIRL:
Ella (though that's a nickname IMO)
Mara
Phoebe
Kelsey

BOY:
Hudson
Clay
Keith
Graham

Of your names, I like Leah for a girl and Cameron or Mitchell for a boy. Rory sounds like a boy's name to me. I have bad associations with the other two girl names due to knowing *****y Morgans and Carolines, which makes me very biased and therefore untrustworthy. I'm just not partial to Marshall or Evan and Logan bugs me because it was our #1 name for a boy last time and apparently its everyone else's #1. If you have no problem having a popular name, I'd go with Logan because I really like the name.

I wish Logan wasn't so darn popular. It is probably my favorite boy name, but it really bugs me that it's so common. Typically, I would define our naming style as classic - not too popular, not too unusual. I looked on the social security website and organized names by state, and in our state Logan was #7 in 2011.

I think Leah is my current favorite girl name. Are Alaina and Leah too similar? Claire, Lainey, and Leah?

I suggested Laila, but Dh vetoed. I liked it because 1. Cute name and 2. The repeating lai in all their names - Claire, Alaina, Laila
Another question - how would you pronounce Laila if you saw it spelled like that? Lay - la or Lie - la?

I essentially agree with Erin, although Marshall now reminds me of the character from How I Met Your Mother, which EVERYBODY says is just like my DH, so now I kind of like that name. I also have a friend/old boss named Marshall, who is pretty great. Not that that is at all helpful to you Biggrin

Also, are you thinking Caro-LIN or Caro-LINE?

I love Laila! I would say Lay-la.

Caro-line. But I really think Caroline is falling down on my list of favorites, as is Morgan. We always seem to pick early favorites that later we no longer like, which is why DH won't play the name game with me. Marshall and Logan were early favorites that I still love though.

We pick totally new names every time. The boy name for DD1 was Seth, and DD's boy name was Jack. I still love Jack but (prepare for stupidness) I was watching an old episode of Family Feud, and the topic was words with the name Jack in them. Some were cute (Jack-o-lantern, black jack, flap jack) lots of them weren't (jack off, jacking around, jack a$$), and I started thinking of all the things he could be called by his friends. I like and suggested Jackson instead, but DH vetoed.

I still think it's super fun to TALK about them, even if you don't end up sticking with the early favorites! Men. Lol

Also, if I had to pick one game show to be on, it would be Family Feud. It just looks like fun. Biggrin

I like Leah and I don't think it's too similar at all, but it still goes with the others and doesn't stand out as a crazy divergence.

I would say Lay-la for that spelling.

Jack or Jackson is really sky-rocketing in popularity. I think its because of the Son's of Anarchy show. I half considered putting Jaxon on my list and using Jax as a nickname. Of course, everyone else is thinking the same thing. So ... Jackson would be out for me.

Oh, and Porter is SO Marshall with a bit of an edge. Smile

I would also say Lay-la. I think Jackson is very cute, but like Erin said, also very popular. I am, of course, partial to Evan. Rory is also a cute name, and I know no one around here with that name. But I haven't done any research on it, just of the people that I've run across.

I love the Family Feud!! Evan likes to yell "answers" to the questions. He then claps or says, "awwwwww" if they get buzzed. It's cute.

Girls, I love Morgan and Caroline! I think Caroline Suzanne is my favorite of all those combinations. I don't really like Leah, and Rory sounds like it should be a nickname for something. I do love Laila, I would say it Lay-la. The other way I would spell Lila or Lyla. I know someone who named her girl Loralei, and calls her Lila for short, which I also love. And it makes me think of that show "Gilmore Girls" which if I remember correctly, the girl Rory's real name was actually Loralei.

Boys, love all your boys names, except Marshall for some reason, which I really can't pin down why I don't like it. But Logan and Evan were some of my top boy names when I had Lucas, and I actually would have named him Logan but his dad absolutely refused b/c of some really stupid reason. Grrr. Oh well. I love Cameron and Mitchell too! Any of them will go well with Roger.

I think you and I have very similar tastes in names Smile

I would say Laila as Lay0la, I love that name, it was almost my name. Hubby has said no to us using it, but my brother has also said we can't because when he has his girl (if he ever does) he is having two girls Layla and Lilith.

For the boys I like how Logan Roger flows

ROFL Right?? It's so ridiculously spot on that he has now embraced it and gets really mad and insulted when the character does something that he wouldn't personally do. Lol

I love Jaxon/Jackson (and Sons of Anarchy!) but yes it's super popular and has been for a while...I have a 19 year old cousin and a 7 year old cousin (different sides) both named Jackson. There was a Jaxson on my original BB too (a DS1, not the baby)

I don't know how averse you are to popular names, though. None of these are particularly oddball, so maybe that's no biggie! Smile

Funny and totally off topic ... I was heading to my building the other day and did a double take because I saw this undergrad walking by wearing a SAMCRO T-shirt who looked exactly like Season 1 Jax Teller (swoon). He was clearly playing up the resemblance.

I hear Rory and think Gilmore Girls. Same with Lorelei. lol.
I like Leah though! There are quite a few variations of it (or close to it) that are nice and not weird too.

I'm all about traditional boy names though, so I'm not much help there since most traditional names rank pretty high.

i love Rory! i am a fan of names that could be either though and I did know a boy named Rory. i like Logan and Evan as well, but they are super popular where i am so i wouldn't use them. Logan is also my nephews name

Honestly I break my own rule when it comes to REALLY traditional. One of our top boy names is William. Can you get more popular than that? Not much! But...it's a family name, and we both like it a lot (nn Will--all the ones in the family are Bill). I think if you're going TRADITIONAL it's okay for it to be common. Something that's been popular since the beginning of time is exempt from my "too popular" rule. I just try to avoid trends.

We did some talking while camping this weekend if Zoe happens to grow a penis by birth. Right now we're thinking James Edward (Edward is FIL's middle name). I LOVE William, but that's FIL's name, BILs name, and BIL's oldest name. I like Benjamin, but HATE Ben. We briefly considered naming DS Alexander, but I hate Alex. lol. Blame childcare for those NN hatreds.

Okay the more I think about the girl's names the more I only like Leah with those two middle name options.

I do like Logan Roger.

Right now my favorite girl name is Leah, favorite boys are Marshall, Mitchell, or Logan. Who knows what DH likes. I think I will name this baby with you ladies and fill him in later. Regardless of what he might think, in the past 2 namings my opinion has counted for more than his, anyway (don't tell him that!!!!!)

Who has spelling variations for Leah?

I think Leigha. I think it's pretty. There was a girl at my school who spelled it Leiha. I didn't know her at all, so I have no negative associations with the spelling Smile

Want to know the meaning of the name Leah? Hebrew for "Mountain Cow," according to Baby Name Wizard.

Another site says Leah means "weary." I suppose that's better.

I like Evan Roger, but if that one is dropping on your list, I also really like Logan Roger. Logan was on my list for boys.

I knew a girl in HS whose name is Leyla. She was super sweet.
You could also do Kaila and then pronounce it either Kayla or Kyla - I would read it Kayla. Leah is pretty too.

DH originally picked Kole's name when I was pg with Lyla then when I was pg again he looked up the meaning and it means "the dark one" (I'm guessing because of coal) and he tried to bail on the name for that reason. I don't care much about all that 'what it means' crap. That's just where some random person sat down and (in a lot of cases) arbitrarily decided that, IMO.

ROFL

I agree that in most cases it doesn't matter...the only time anyone ever asks you what it means is if it's unusual (we get that question a lot). Adair means "from the oak tree ford" which...okay? Nice, I guess? But not why I picked it, certainly.

No one will EVER ask you what Leah means. And if they do, just make something up Lol

(apparently, it can also mean "delicate" if you like that any better...or "gazelle", which is certainly more poetic than "Mountain Cow"! LOL)

I don't think Leah has a bad meaning (I found the Hebrew meanings first of weary and delicate) and it is biblical. She gave Jacob 6 sons. Not like it means murderer or something.;) I do look up name meanings and love it when I love a name with a good meaning, but it won't keep me from a name I love unless it's truly awful. Zoe is life in Greek. The meaning is one of the the things that drew me to the name originally when I saw it, but it's not like I chose it because of the meaning if that makes sense. Seems like most meanings are getting lost and websites can pretty much publish whatever they want these days.

I do like Leah, but MIL's name is Lia so that is a no for us lol. And there is another spelling for you.

Lucas' name means "man from Lucania" or some weird place like that Blum 3

i love the name Kayla, but i am biased it's one of my darling little cousins names

I actually think "mountain cow" is hilarious and it doesn't turn me off from the name at all. I don't even usually look at name meanings.

I think I have Dh agreeing to Leah if I agree to Logan.

It was fun looking through the name book again and seeing the names hubby underlines when we couldn't agree on a girls name. One of them was Lena
