What the f^&k am i suppose to do?

So Simon will not eat, pretty much at all. He's drinking ok and will bf. He had a fever and is very whiney and some diarrhea and a diaper rash so we went to the dr's yesterday. Turns out he (apparently) has a double ear infection. Whatever, I'll explain later why I doubt this. He's prescribed antibiotics, which he would NOT take no matter what I'd so since they tasted soooo bitter! I diluted it in an entire bottle and you could still taste it.

So they give us a different antibiotic, that tastes ok, just sweet. But now he's skeptical of anything I give him since he's expecting that nasty a$$ stuff from yesterday. However, he no longer has a temp. but still wont really eat. Otherwise he's acting fairly normal.

Now for why I dont know for sure if the doctor is right about the ear infection: she looked while he was screaming his head off and totally purple/red faced.. she said, oh yea his ear drum is just bulging and red. BUT when he was sick awhile back a nurse practitioner said that they always look that way if they are screaming their heads off.

BUT i have no other reason for him not eating. He's not coughing/sneezing. No throwing up or anything. Liquids fo in fine. I've given him advil incase it's his teeth, but that doesnt really change the eating. The diaper rash is almost gone and so is the diarrhea, but he hasnt really eaten much to poop out.

ERGERGERG!

Well, since you don't have another explanation I think it's okay to go with the ear infection diagnosis until you have more information that points to something else. Not all ear infections present themselves the same way, so it could very well be that. Very common to not want to eat when not feeling well. Even Aiden with his minor cold (he's seemingly doing a heck of a lot better than me ) hasn't been eating as much as he normally does the past few days.
I have no advice about medicine though b/c DS is a weirdo and will slurp down anything I've had to give to him. I do remember fighting tooth a nail with meds as a kid though. My parents would bribe me. Blum 3

:grouphug: I really hope he's back to himself soon!

I agree. At least he is drinking. Dehydration is a bigger issue than not eating. The eating will come around again soon.

It's so tough to see them out of sorts. Good luck momma!

Your post describes Lyla the week before last. She ate absolutely nothing for a whole weeks and would only drink a little bit. Just leave it be. As long as he's drinking, he should be fine. Once he starts feeling better he will slowly start to eat again. We just kept offering food at every meal and continued to offer her her regular snacks and she slowly started eating again. Lyla still not a big eater and eats very little at most meals, but she did go back to 'her' normal.

Thanks ladies. I was more concerned with getting him to take his meds as well, but i've discovered a way how! I put it in apple juice and give it to him in a sippy cup!!! I have to make sure he drinks it all so he was sort of wondering why i was forcin him to drink, but he did! YAY!!

Way to go on getting the meds down!!! I agree with everyone else, as long as he's drinking and has urine output, don't worry. Hopefully this won't last long and he'll be back to normal in no time.

DS1 just doesn't eat at all when he's ill. Even if it's something small like a cold. He's a proper man about it and acts like he's going to die!! He won't eat for about a week after the start of the illness. (he's been ill on and off for about 9 weeks so he's starting to look dangerously thin from all the not eating, but he's finally on the up..anyway..) So it's perfectly normal for them not to eat when they are ill

Also, just give him pain relief, forget fighting with the meds. As we are on the NHS here and they have no money I have been told unless there is puss coming out or their temp won't come down then they don't need the anti-d's, they will just get over it themselves Smile

PROMISE as a BTDT mum...he will be just fine in a couple of days, just like the others said, make sure he drinks.

I agree keep up the fluids and offer foods, but if he doesn't eat them he will be fine. Maybe try softer foods as well, like mashed veg, yoghurt etc because I know with me when I have an ear infection sometimes it almost hurts to chew too much.
I'm lucky with anti biotics when we get them, Ronin always gets prescribed one that he practically comes back begging for more.

Im glad you got him to take his meds. Most people who are sick dont feel like eating since their body is trying to get the sickies out.. Hope he starts to feel better soon..

i agree with the worrying about not eating as well. as long as he is taking fluids and nursing. When Lucas has a cold he barely eats solids

glad you got some medicine in him! i hope he feels better soon.

I'm glad you figured out a way to give him his meds. Teagan is a total monster to give meds to. I can't dilute it since I can never rely on her to finish anything.

Teagan just went through a "cleanse". For a week and a half she ate NOTHING. I seriously mean nothing. Instead, she nursed like a fiend. I tried EVERYTHING yet she just wouldn't touch food. Her poops were back to newborn consistency. Then one day she just up and demanded food. She ate tons and tons and tons of food for 5 days and now she's back to eating very little (her norm). She wasn't sick but we were traveling. Whatever her reason, she got over it. Kids are strange.

This! Just when you think you have them figured out, they realize you have them figured out and change the game! lol

Glad you got him to take his medicine! Lainey will slurp anything down (so far) but DD1 was crafty about medicine from the beginning. If I remember correctly, we eventually got to the point where NOTHING would work to get her to take meds and we'd have to hold her and force medicine into her mouth. It was awful Sad Thankfully she outgrew it.

Jonah also would NEVER take medicine...it would take 2 people to hold him down and then give it. We did it for a week...then found out he was very allergic...and HAD TO START ANOTHER SET OF antibiotics! ahhhhh! It was a b%T##!
That was his only time he needed them thank goodness!!! I hope he feels better soon!!! ((HUGS))
