When should I worry? (Personal, possible TMI)

So I had the Paragard IUD put in on Thursday. I've had some bleeding, very mild and I'm only using a liner, and some cramping, also mild, over the weekend.

Well about an hour ago I started cramping really, really bad. It hurts so much I feel nauseated. It's worse than any AF cramping I've ever had. I took some Tylenol and it did nothing. My bodily functions are all perfectly normal and I've no constipation or anything so it can't be that. I just broke down and took my last pain pill I had left over because I can't take the pain. The problem is that I am home alone with both kids and I don't know if it's something that really needs to be seen to or if it will go away.

I didn't get AF back until 6 months PP after Lyla, so I don't think it's that. I am exclusively breastfeeding.

What do you think?

I think you should call your OB. Its been less than a week but your cramps should be getting better not worse. Have you checked your strings?

No. I don't know that I know how. Do I just reach in there and see if I can feel strings?

Yea, they're more of a wire feel. You'll notice them if you check your cervix. But I agree with Erin, call OB.

They didn't tell you how to check your strings? Yeesh! Yeah, just reach up in there. It should feel like stiff dental floss.

I had to check my own strings before my OB would let me leave when I had my IUD put in.

I hope you're feeling better and have an answer as to what is going on. Sad

I have no advice, I've never had an IUD. I do hope you are not hurting as bad. Sending hugs your way.

Anna, I would call your OB & see what they say. Feel better, and KUP!

I remember that I got some semi-bad cramping a 2 or 3 days after I got my IUD in, but nothing worse than normal bad AF cramps. I also bleed moderately for a week or so and then lightly off and on for almost a month before it finally let up.

There is a big range of what can be normal. If it is extremely painful, then I would call your doc. I know that the chance of perforation is rare, but it is still there. I hope it's nothing though and that you're feeling better soon!

The pain stopped after I took the pain pill and hasn't come back. I guess I'll just wait until my appointment next month unless it starts to hurt again. That was odd though, I thought.

Thanks for the info ladies. I appreciate it. I'll check tonight and see if I can feel the strings.

I'm glad it stopped. :bigarmhug: If it comes back or you can't find the strings you should be seen promptly.

Are you still feeling better? The bleeding hasn't picked up, right?

The bleeding did pick up just a smidge, but not enough to go from liner to pad, so not significant at all. Once the pain killer wore off there was some very light cramping, but totally negligible compared to what I had this morning. It was so strange that it came on fairly rapidly and then I couldn't even stand up straight and it was making me feel nauseous. I was really worried for a little bit there that something had gone horribly wrong somewhere. But I just knew that if I panicked and called the doctors office and they had me come in, that nothing would be wrong and I'd, once again, have made a mountain out of a molehill. If it happens again, I reserve the right to overreact, though.

You did not overreact. Those things can feel very strange and you never want to take a chance! My OB also told me to check the strings after I have AF too. Just to make sure everything is still in place.

I agree--that's not overreacting at all! I'm glad it's better now, and I hope it stays that way. I have heard that the Paraguard can cause more cramping than normal, but to the point of doubled over with nausea definitely seems extreme enough to warrant a call if it continues.

I was really bad about checking my strings when I had the Mirena ("really bad" as in "I never did"). One more reason I'm waffling about trying the Paraguard.

Anna--how's this going now?

I've been on these pills six weeks now, and they're fine except every time I forget to take one I get a midcycle AF! It's getting really annoying, and I'm starting to suspect that pills just aren't going to be the answer for me...it's too easy to forget them. My only other real option is the Paraguard...I just don't know if I want to go through a whole new adjustment period. ARGH. Why can't BC be simple AND effective?!

I still have cramping here and there but nothing serious and nothing compared to what I had that one day. Lately, I've had some slightly odd creamy discharge (sorry) but I don't know that it's anything out of the ordinary. I'm supposed to have my follow up to get it checked on Thursday, but I have nobody to watch Lyla, so I think I'm going to have to cancel and hope for the best.

Anna, I get the same type of discharge. To me it seems like just a lot of CM or something. I did some research online and found this was normal w/ the Mirena (not sure of the similarities and differences between that and the Paraguard). It used to be a lot more, but now I only get it ocassionally, almost like when AF maybe should be here, but since I don't get her anymore, maybe just the excess CM?

IDK, probably TMI Smile
