OMG, I'm so excited I just had to share.
We have been stressing about preschool for next year. I can't believe how expensive it is. For five half-days, we would have to pay 800-1000 a month, which isn't in our budget. So we had been looking at 2 half-days a week, which would cost 300-500 a month.
Then I came across the Los Angeles universal preschool program (LAUP). They offer low-cost preschool regardless of income. The program is only available for four year-olds, and only for one school year. The only catch is that, since it's a growing program, there aren't that many sites, and it's on a first-come, first-serve basis. They charge a parent-investment fee based on a sliding scale of the median income in the neighborhood.
I found an LAUP school down the street which would have been 90/month or 900 for the year. Unfortunately the waiting list was a mile long. I was able to find another one about 7 miles away and they still had some openings. We went and met with the director and Brandon really liked it, and so did I. We've been waiting to hear from them as there were a few people ahead of us on the list. We just heard today that we're in. He gets to go five half-days a week and our parent investment fee will only be 60/month or 600 for the year, since the income in that area is a bit lower than ours. I am so relieved right now, you have no idea.
