    Default Preschool

OMG, I'm so excited I just had to share.

We have been stressing about preschool for next year. I can't believe how expensive it is. For five half-days, we would have to pay 800-1000 a month, which isn't in our budget. So we had been looking at 2 half-days a week, which would cost 300-500 a month.

Then I came across the Los Angeles universal preschool program (LAUP). They offer low-cost preschool regardless of income. The program is only available for four year-olds, and only for one school year. The only catch is that, since it's a growing program, there aren't that many sites, and it's on a first-come, first-serve basis. They charge a parent-investment fee based on a sliding scale of the median income in the neighborhood.

I found an LAUP school down the street which would have been 90/month or 900 for the year. Unfortunately the waiting list was a mile long. I was able to find another one about 7 miles away and they still had some openings. We went and met with the director and Brandon really liked it, and so did I. We've been waiting to hear from them as there were a few people ahead of us on the list. We just heard today that we're in. He gets to go five half-days a week and our parent investment fee will only be 60/month or 600 for the year, since the income in that area is a bit lower than ours. I am so relieved right now, you have no idea.

That is great! Wow, preschool is expensive in LA area! I pay only $156 a month for Eliza to go two afternoons a week. She will go three afternoons a week next year and it will likely be more like $200. That is as cheap as it gets unless you go coop here which I did not want to do. (long story - coops are just not my cup o tea)

Wow! $60 vs. like $600?! Quite a bargain! We pay $115 for 2 half days here, but Iowa is relatively cheap place to live.

It is amazing to me how the cost of preschool varies so much, even in my own town. The Montessori program is $800 a month for five half days, 20 hours a week. The catholic school was $155 for two afternoons. The school Eliza is at is same, $156 for two half days. If she went to this same school five half days (morning) I think it would be like $400 a month. My friend pays $350 a month for three half days, am, for her son for a program very similar to the one Eliza is in. My other friends pay $200 a month for 6 hours, 3 days 2 hours a day, a week. These prices are all over the map!

I agree, it's amazing how much the cost of preschool varies. I honestly don't know how people do it here. The Catholic school was the cheapest at 300 for two half-days. Most of the other schools ran into the 400-500 range for two half-days. If I was working, especially when we have another little one, almost my entire paycheck would go towards preschool and daycare. It's insane.
