Ben wont nurse!

yesterday i was super sick so when dh got home i had him give Ben BM bottles so i could rest, today i nursed at 2am, 6:30am, 9am, & 11, then he had another 4oz bm bottle at 1:30. at 5 tonight i tried to nurse because i hadnt since 11 and boobs hurt so i woke Ben up, i positioned him and he got the shield (i need to use a shield still :() in his mouth and got a look of horror! he got supper flustered, but was able to calm down when i put him on my shoulder, repeated this a few times over the course of this evening because i thought maybe he's just not hungry??? and i got the same reaction!!!!!!!!!! We havent had a problem like this till now, i ended up giving him a bm bottle when he couldn't calm down. he took to it without issue. I do need him to be good with the bottle because I go back to work next week, but I would like to nurse him before work/after work/ and evenings. Is this a "nursing strike"? I don't get it. SOOO upset about this.

oh hon im sry that must be hard, I am not too experienced but have you tried using a warm compress first before you put him to the breast, and expressing some. Can you try to nurse him with out the shield? I know when I am hurting and way engorged it can be difficult to get Lilly to nurse, or even latch on.
I know it can be hard but keep trying I am sure you are doing a great job. hang in there.
Also talking to a lactation consultant can give you other ideas and support.

I dunno! I don't think it's a nursing strike... from my understanding, a baby has to be pretty emotinally traumatized to go on a nursing strike but I could be wrong... I couldn't imagine it being nipple confusion at this age but that would be my only guess... just keep offering it to him, if he gets hungry enough, he'll take it. I have heard that some babies just don't go between breast and bottle easily... I'm willing to bet mine would be like that so I have not offered a bottle but I don't have to go back to work. I would start some fenugreek when you go back to work to help keep your supply up if he's going to refuse to nurse but before I started worrying too much about that, I'd just keep offering him the breast.

Yeah, I agree with Becca. Too early for nursing strike. Just keep offering it to him. He's probably used to the faster flow of the nipple and they have to work harder at the breast. And like Becca said, if he's hungry enough he'll eat.

I would change to a smaller nipple size so the bottle is harder work and when you put him to the breast make sure you have let down already so that it is there for him.
Good luck.

When I was transitioning DD2 to nuring from the bottles in the NICU, I found I had to have milk in the nipple shield and already to be in let down state. I had to always offer nursing but I found there were a couple times a day that took a long time to get her to nurse. If after a few tries, I couldn't get her to nurse, then I would give a bottle and just try again next time.

Good luck Smile

Thanks ladies! Smile feel much better this morning, Ben decided he would nurse at his 3am feeding. And this morning AF visited, I know that was probably my big emotional issue with it! I wonder if it messes with my milk at all. But I will be purchasing the smaller Pre-term nipples to help with the bottle issue! I will also look more into the fenugreek for when Im back at work. BOOO only two days left.. I can't believe how time has flown.

Kendra only nurses with a nipple too and i pump as well. She did the same thing for me the last 2 days, but today we had no issues. AF started for me this past monday and she has been was very fussy monday and tuesday...i wonder if AF does play a part in that like you mentioned.

AF has always affected my milk supply for sure and I've read the hormones might change the taste and consistency of it. Hopefully he's doing better now.

Sad he just had another episode of it. He hasn't had a bottle in a day now, seems each time its a struggle. He does way better when he's sleepy if he's awake or upset its just worse. I thought with two months of BF he was a pro, guess not, I won't take it for granted thats for sure.
