BFing and PCOS

I know there are a few women that have PCOS, me included. I get this monthly PCOS newsletter via email and at one point I read that women with PCOS can have a more difficult time BFing due to low milk supply. I was able to BF DS without help for 3 months. After 3 months we had to supplement with milk and by 6 mos I stopped all together. Now I had to go back to work after 2 months so I was pumping as well. I NEVER had an over supply issues and remember only feeling engorged 2 or 3 times. But around 6 months, it just got the point where I was hardly producing anything.

Has anyone read anything about this or how to help with this issue? I mourned the loss of BFing with DS and want to nurse my next one for at least a year.

I tried fenugreek with DS and even domperidone (I think is what it was called) but it only helped a little.

I was able to BF w/o any help for 6 months and then my supply totally crashed. I started domperidone (30mg, 3x day) and was able to nurse when DD weaned at 18 months. The only way I was able to make it work was that I pumped at 11pm every single night after DD dropped that feed until she weaned. I stored that in the freezer so that when I would have dry periods (which were fairly frequent), I would have something to give her. Fenugreek didn't work for me either, but the dom did a pretty good job, although I was never able to go below 90mg/day like some women are able to.

Nursing with PCOS is super challenging, but it's doable. Growth spurts are especially challenging because our bodies don't respond the same way a normal body does. I just had to acknowledge the fact that sometimes my baby was going to be a little hungry, but that it would be best for her in the end. How much dom were you taking? When I get a moment, I can look up the site I used for dosing...if 90mg/day isn't enough to work for you, you can safely take quite a bit more than that. It's way cheaper than formula. Smile

I honestly don't remeber how much I took but it obviously wasn't enough.

I would love the website that you used! I can't even remember how much it cost.

I found it. It's on Dr. Jack Newman's site...he has wonderful breastfeeding info and videos. Of course, try all the other ways to increase supply first, but this time I'm making sure I have it on hand because it takes about 10-14 days to get to me from the pharmacy I order it from. It was costing me about $90 for a three month supply at 90mg a day, and that's when I bought it in bulk.
