First day back/ long & confusing pumping ?

So today was my first day back. It went really well. I did shed a few tears but all in all it was good. I had around 350 emails to go through .

I immediately nursed Max when I got home and as I was nursing him he gave me a huge milky grin. It was wonderful!! He smiles all the time but he's never smiled while nursing. It was great.

Okay, so here's the confusing part....

Thus far, I've had zero problems having enough milk for Max. I've nursed on demand and even pumped while nursing for his first morning feeding (anywhere from 7-8am).

So today I nursed him around 6:30am and pumped at the same time. I was able to get 4oz while I nursed. I nursed him right before leaving him with my mom around 8:45. I pumped at 11:30 and got about 5oz total, pumped again at 2:30 and got 2.5oz total. I was going to pump at 4:30 but I was leaving work at 5 and my mom said he had just eaten shortly before 4 so I decided to hold off and nurse him when I got him. Well I wasn't able to nurse him again till 6. I also pumped while I nursed and got 1.5oz. So that's 13oz total.

I'll know in the morning how many ounces he ate throughout the day yesterday (my mom left the sheet at her work where she watches him so I don't know the exact number he ate) but I'm certain, no positive it was more than that.

I do have a small stash, I had about 35 ounces before today. I'm going to pick up some Fenugreek to help but here's my problem. Bear with me here....

On Monday's and Friday's I go in the office at 7 and get of around 3:30. Tues, Wed and Thurs I go in at 9:40 and I'm off at 5. I drop Max off at my mom's at 9 then take my older son to school. I reserved the lactation room (yes we have one, it's awesome!!) for 8:30, 11:30, 2:30 and 4:30. Obviously on Monday's and Friday's I won't utilize the 4:30 slot but and the other days I won't utilize the 8:30 slot. These are really the only times available as other mom's use the room too.

Should I pump at 4:30 regardless of if Max will need to eat by the time I get home? DH picks up the kids on the days I go in later (T,W and Th) and so I wouldn't be able to nurse him till 6 like I did today.

Sorry, I know this is confusing. I'm not opposed to supplementing with formula if/when that time comes but I'd really like to avoid it.

I plan on continuing to pump while I nurse him on the weekends for his morning feeding. Should I try and pump while I nurse at any available opportunity? I'm worried if I do that then I won't have enough for him for his next feeding.

Thanks ladies.

Just an after thought, he nurses around 10:30 before going down and then sleeps for 4 hours. Should I try pumping while nursing num during that feeding?

i dont have any advise for you, i am struggling with my supply and am doing the best i can. i only get 2oz every 3-4 hours during the day while im at work. the most i EVER pump is 4 oz total, and that is always in the morning. this morning i nursed and pumped and got 2 1/2 out of one breast  that NEVER happens. i am trying to work on my supply so far, i cant get more than 4oz Sad i try to nurse her at 6:30 after we are home and fed ourselves (need to keep up my own energy too Smile ), but SIL feeding her right before we pick her up so she is never hungry. i may need to make sure that changes Wink

Glad you had a good first day back, and hey 350 emails, atleast you were busy!

I would go ahead and pump at 430 as well. It's not like if you pump then, and then feed Max at 530, you'll have no milk. You'll still have tons of milk as your body will make it as he eats.

Your milk just sounds like it is starting to regulate itself. You're not low or having "supply issues", it just knows to make itself as Max eats and for as much as he is eating at the time. And since the pump isn't Max, it doesn't understand to make itself when you're pumping.

Yes, I'd pump every time you feed him. You won't run out of milk for the next feeding, I promise! It doesn't work that way. Wink Milk is supply and demand. As long as Max is demanding it, it will make itself, no worries. Smile

Fenugreek should help make milk for the pump, so definitely worth a shot. Just be careful, because I do know several women who took fenugreek and instead of helping to produce more milk, it dried up there milk.

I would pump when he eats as much as you can, a friend of mine used a "mother milk tea?" I think it was called something like that, also I've used oatmeal as a boost. Be sure you're keeping up on the fluids for yourself too. Good luck to you, and hang in there your body will adjust

This. Try not to stress. Camdyn only eats 12 oz while I am at work.

Well, today was a bit better than yesterday. I pumped and nursed Max at 6 and at 8, then pumped at work at 11:30, 2:30 and 4:30 and got a total of about 15 oz all together. And I know he didn't eat that much throughout the day.

I'm going to pick up some of that tea and some Fenugreek this weekend.

Oh, and I definitely need to drink more h2o!

I no expert by any means but, i know when i do pump i get way more at night so, i would pump both sides during the middle of the night feeding. I have heard that we produce more milk in during the night, so if you have to wake up anyway pump each side for at least 5 min after he is done nursing. if he is sleeping through the night i would wake up 3 to 5 hours after going to bed and then pump even if he is not up to eat.
oh and dont worry your body will produce as much as he needs, and more if you continue to pump.

I was gonna say that I find I make about an oz an hr pumping....so if I pumped every two hrs I could get 2oz per boob. You don't have much time btwn ur pumping so I doubt u will make a huge amount but the more u pump the better ull keep ur supply up. I would pump at 4/430 too bc ur body will make for Max but it will help u get that extra amount continually made to pump.

I nurse Em in the morning btwn 5-630 (whenever she wakes up) then pump during planning at 845 (usually 4-5oz), during lunch at 12 (always smallest amount at this time, maybe 3 oz total) then most days at 4 on the way to get the girls where I get 3-4oz total. if I get to them by 4 I skip the last pump session and just nurse her bc she hasn't had her 3rd bottle yet. She eats about 14oz if she gets all 3 bottles, but some days I do make it to her before she gets that last bottle. I'm barely keeping up while at work but do pump during her long naps n stuff on the wknd to help keep my stash going. I also pump at night but the amount depends on if she's up or not too. I'd like to ween from that soon thought since she is sleeping longer n longer....I want sleep too lol!

Hello,

I personally pump at my midnight feeding and get a full 2.25 oz per boob (I could probably keep going but I am tired and want to go back to sleep). During the day I pump every 2 hours and get 2.5 from my right and about 1.5 from my left. I also massage when I pump to help empty the boobs as that helps to create more since the boobs know they have been emptied. I have also read (but not tried) continuing to pump for a few minutes after the milk stops coming to simulate demand. I also freeze everything that was pumped 2 days before and not used so that I have some stash in case I ever need it.

My pedi/LC told me that Lily should eat (on average per day) 1-1.2 oz per hour. So, I just make sure to pump enough that I can send with Lily 1.5 oz per hour. I put it in bottles of 3oz for the sitter and I also give one extra b/c Lily spits up a ton. They have NEVER used all of the bottles and usually I get two back. I feed her as soon as we get home at 5 and then I try again at 6 as she goes to bed between 6 and 7. She gets me up around midnight and again at 2 and 4 and her final feeding from me before we leave is at 6.

Good luck!
