I think I'm anemic

My doctor has never done bloodwork for this but here is why I think I am. In the fall of 10 I was going to school pt and one class I took was Anatomy/physiology. We did some blood testing in one of the and I was the volunteer. It showed that my iron was low. I didn't think too much on it then.

Since becoming pg around 20 weeks, I've felt this tightening/shortness of breath periodically. Usually a few times a day. I asked my doctor about it and he jsut said it was normal. Well, it's increasingly gotten worse. Not the pain just the frequency. Plus I've been really tired.

I was concerned that it might be my blood pressure and I have a monitor so I took it this evening and it was great.

The tightening/shortness of breath and tiredness are all signs of anemia. So is dizziness which I've also had a few times. I'll just be sitting at my desk at work and would get dizzy. I know it's common sometimes to get dizzy when standing during pg but this wasn't the case.

Anyway, I've got a doctor's appointment on Monday so this is definitely something I'm going to bring up.

What are some good things for me to eat? Keep in mind I'm also being treated for gest. diab. I wasn't full blown but they said borderline gest. diab. so I'm following a gest. diab. diet.

Thanks ladies!

Im sorry your not feeling good. I am very inexperienced and i learn alot from you ladies. my dr has me on an iron pill every other day, i just started taking them on monday. I have had moments of out of the blue dizziness lately. i wonder if its from the lack of iron? i will start paying more attention to me...Kale and greens from what i researched are good, among other things, of course LOL

Lentils, nuts, red meat and leafy greens are all good sources of iron. If you eat vitamin C with them, the iron will be better absorbed.

The shortness of breath could just be normal- I had it horribly with DS and I never was anemic that I know of.
Like Joy said, there are several good sources. My fav right now is sunflower seed kernels and almonds.
Hopefully it's not low and you don't have to worry about taking a supplement!

Second this.. and I know I said this on another thread, but avoid milk/dairy when you eat iron rich foods as it stops the absorption of iron. (something about the calcium). My ob said 3 hours after eating calcium/dairy is when I should take my iron pill.

THIS!!!!!
Last pg with DS I complained about being tired, dizzy out of breath etc, was told its normal at 8/9m preggo and then a week before I gave birth I was VERY low iron, and needed 3 blood transfusions after he was born. I had other complications, but was told when the induction started that I might need them because I was so low. I couldnt get out of bed for 3 days after without help I was so weak.
Its something I've had checked every month this time around, and the doc thinks im nuts but I insist on getting it... makes me feel better if nothing else. lol. But definitely get it checked. Even if it isnt too low, it just takes a quick blood test.

Thanks girls. I think I'll insist on a blood test when I go on Monday.
