Lil Prayer Needed- Sorta Off Topic

So when my daughter was born, we had a horrible time getting her to latch on nursing or drink from a bottle. She ended up being on a preemie nipple for about six months and still would choke and gag her milk down. Well, this happened with baby food as well, she would choke, gag, and throw up stage one baby food at a year old so they decided then to do a swallow study. Well, as you can imagine, that was no easy feat and they couldn't get her to take enough of the barium to properly do the study so it was inconclusive. We went on dealing with it, starting solids late, etc. and didn't worry too much b/c she was gaining weight very well. Now, it has gotten worse again as, IMO, she is eating more "grown up" foods. I still try to cut things up very tiny, etc. but last night, she was eating a very soft strawberry and choked. She started turning blue as I was doing the heimlich and I thought I was going to have to call 911 when it finally came up-- and she hasn't eaten since b/c she is too scared that she will choke again. This has become a daily event and now that she is able to remember time from time that she chokes, she is avoiding food in general. So, I called our wonderful Pedi. this morning (on a Sunday, how awesome is he!) and he is referring her for another swallow study tomorrow. He thinks that her epiglottis isn't flapping over properly when she eats. I hope Alex doesn't have this problem! Please say a lil prayer for my sweet girl that she will take the barium and they will be able to perform the study and find out what is going on and that her symptoms will get better and say a prayer Alex doesn't have this either! Thanks ladies! I will KUP!

I know this is controversial, but have you thought about taking her to a chiropractor who also does pediatric chiro? I have had more than one person tell me that a single adjustment can change feeding habits in babies who are having difficulty. Again, totally controversial I think - but just wanted to throw it out there for you to consider.

Best of luck helping your LO. I can't imagine the terror both of you felt.

I will definitely say a prayer for her! Poor thing. I know a girl at work who her daughter has kind of the same thing but it's the muscles in her throat that don't work properly. She's also autistic. She has to almost puree her food otherwise she has bad stomach problems and gagging etc. I'm sure this isn't the case with your little girl but still.

If it is the overlapping thing, what is the treatment?

:bighug: Thinking & praying for your little girl and you and alex! I hope you get answers soon! Thats really scary - I had to do the hiemlich on DS last summer and it scared me to death. But it works. Luckily hes never had any issues since then.

A note to all the moms (and esp. FTMs) Think about taking a first aid course with a baby CPR course. I did it with a moms group and it definitely saved DS and me that one time. I was out with my mom when it happened and she tried but was doing it wrong and didnt get it out. I knew what to do and he was fine after a lot of crying.

Totally worth the small cost and time spent.

That is very scary. It's so good that you knew the Heimlich. I hope the study goes well for Zoey and that can figure out what is going on! And prayers for you- it's hard to watch when your LOs are sick.

They would do speech therapy, not for speech, but for teaching her how to eat properly-- things like tucking her chin to widen the space in the throat, etc. We'd also have to cut things up just really small and pray she outgrows it, pedi. said if this is what the problem is, she will eventually outgrow but you can imagine, it's scary until she does.

Totally agree! I worked in a daycare up until last year and had been there about 5 years before that with life savings courses every 6 months so i still remembered them but i also wanted to mention that many places offer free life saving courses, do a google to see if a redcross or even some hospitals do it, are offering any free courses-- they are normally popular during the summer.

that is so scary! Our son has had a "puking/choking" problem since birth. He had his tonsils out at 2 1/2 and has been remarkbly better since. I hope you get so me answers soon. We had to go through the swallow eval too.... It's hard to see your kids go through so much and not have any answers or help for them. Sad
