Miserable :(

So I had my weekly midwife appointment today...I had her check me and she said I'm 1-2cms dilated and 60% effaced. That was better than anything less than that I guess.

We talked about setting up an appointment to check on the baby, amnio sac etc at 41 weeks incase she's not here by then (next Tuesday) but I bumped that up to Monday 9am instead...if I could have it my way, I'd have them check me this Friday but nope, gotta be at 41 weeks...

I had some brown discharge and cramping after the exam - because of it I guess. Have to admit I got a little excited thinking "at last!" but nothing since...I'm told it can be a day, it can be 10 days before I see baby...I'm getting sooooo impatient that I went out to the local store and bought a bottle of castor oil.

I haven't used it and to be honest, I don't want to. But it's there and I got it in desperation I guess. I did ask the midwife about it - rather than say "don't do it, it's controversial, it's this or that" to discourage me, she said "well, you'll have diarrhoea when you're in labour so it'll be unpleasant for everyone in the room"...

True.

What do you think? Would be nice to know or hear of any stories about it...I'm on google and youtube like a rash and it's just more of the same....

Trying to hang in and let baby come when she wants. I thought maybe I'll ask them to induce me on Monday but my doula is trying to talk me out of it.

It would be the BEST if I could go into spontaneous labour in the next day or two. Or three. Heck, even 4!

It hurts lying down, let along getting up out of bed...I've had a pretty complaint free pregnancy but it seems all the discomforts, anxiety, stress is hitting me now in what could be the last week.

Argh. OK. Rant over.

Let's hear anything and everything you know about castor oil...

Sad

The biggest fear i've heard is that it can cause the baby to have a bowel movement. or all it does is make you have diarhea and nothing else.

i'm sure you've tried lots of things but have you been using evening primrose oil (EPO)? try 2-3 caplets inserted vaginally before you go to bed (and use a light pad because you'll leak). with DS2 i did 3 caplets the night before i went into labor, i'd also walked .5 mile that night and the morning i went into labor i'd walked 1.5 miles.
EPO has natural prostanganlins (sp??) that will also help you dilate.

Hugs! i'm sure you're uncomfy. i'm 38 weeks 3 days and its hard for me to rest (let alone my poor DH i'm keeping him up at night too).

there is a chance for the baby to have a meconium birth but what is sorta funny to me-- I wouldn't use the castor oil for this reason and guess what, my baby still had a meconium birth and i still had diarhea during labor while i was pushing, they just held a chuck pad on my bottom and it never made the room smell bad or anything... my midwives encourage castor oil inductions b/c they are better than a pitocin induction... there are other natural ways to get things moving though but they won't work unless your body is ready to go into labor-- ask her about taking some cotton root or getting your membranes sweeped.

Sad I wouldn't do it. I so hope your pain is over soon, but I honestly feel that if baby isn't ready yet, there is a reason. If anything I would wait till your 41 weeks plus.

Lurker....

I was facing induction with my second so I decided to try it. I took it around 10 am and made a few trips to the bathroom, but it really wasn't an issue and at that point I needed to be cleaned out anyways.

By 2 I was having braxton hicks time contractions, they didn't hurt, but they were there.

By 5 I was having steady contractions and was beginning to think that it might actually happen.

By 6 I decided that I probably shouldn't fold the laundry and vacuum, but should head to the hospital instead. I arrived at the hospital at/around 7:30. Madison was born at 8:10 with no complications.

I only went to the bathroom the first few times that morning, but did keep Gatorade on hand to keep hydrated in case it got bad. My MW had told me to go ahead and try it, but to drink every time I went to the bathroom to stay hydrated. She gave me the amount that I should take and I think it was a few tablespoons, but I don't remember exactly.

I guess the trick is to take enough for it to be effective, but not so much that you over do it.

I was 40+5 weeks with DD1, didn't do castor oil and she had a BM before birth. With DD2 I was 40+3 weeks, I did castor oil and she didn't have a BM before birth.

From all the research I did it said that it works 50% of the time, but won't work if your body isn't ready. To stay hydrated, and that there is a possibility of the baby having a BM, but that they can't confirm that it is because of the castor oil because it often happens post term anyways.

If I were to have a third and my body was dilating and on its way to being ready I would try it again. The few trips to the bathroom were way better than a pitocin (sp?) driven birth IMO. Good luck with your decision. Smile

Hang in there due date buddy, I am still here!!! I would not take castor oil, about the only thing I am doing is walking staying hydrated and dtd, which I am sure Dh is appreciating.

I say if its not time its not time, no matter how uncomfortable I am getting. You can do it.

I know what you mean about painful sleeping.

ultimately its your choice, but knowing me if I took it it would be painful spastic colon.

Same here. So its a chance either way
I have also heard of ladies taking it and having no effects from it at all.
I would ask about a Membrane Sweep before the Castor Oil.
Sorry Its taking so long, But your closer than ever now. Any moment .. I know easier said than believing

See, I'm facing induction next week, possibly on Monday even when I'll be at the hospital for tests and such to check on her and everything and after watching The Business of Being Born and totally wanting to avoid Pitocin knowing what can happen, castor oil just seemed like a better option...

So...I tried it

Last night.

I had some contractions and definitely some different sensations down there but I wasn't running to the bathroom or anything. I was cautious with the amount - instead of 2oz, I put in 2 table spoons and made a smoothie with pineapple and frozen blackberries...and cranberry juice...and this morning (TMI alert) I just had a good BM.

I've taken another shake an hour ago so will see if anything happens...am feeling weird things around my back when I get up from sitting down...there was a little stringy mucus before...but not enough to write home about :/

Membrane sweep, if nothing happens by the end of the week, I'll ask for sure on Monday morning!

Pah!

oh well i too am facing induction but my MW's will let me go until August 29th, as long as all my test keep coming back normal.

Maybe you should go for a pedi, get a massage, or go see a chiropractor??
anything to help relieve stress, and anxiety of birth, i know i don't think i am stressed but i can't hurt to try different relaxation techniques.

I wonder what they can do if you refuse induction??? Do you think it depends on the state laws/ hospital regulations ?

I think it might depend on the state laws...my midwife said they will want to induce anytime between 41 and 42 weeks, no later than 42.

Anything later, they'll probably get you to sign a disclaimer right?

Pedicure sounds great btw...actually could do with one.

My doula came over today, told her about some mucus-y bits in my pants...she thinks I've lost my mucus plug and that I must be at 2cms now...we'll see, been having mild contractions on and off today....probably c/o the castor oil.

Try some nipple stimulation and walking as well. If you don't like the idea of stimulation, you can try putting warm compresses across your boobs. Supposedly it can do the same thing. The day before I went into labor with Camdyn, I did nipple stimulation with a breast pump in the morning, walked a mile, and then took a nap with the warm compresses across my chest. I repeated the same thing in the evening using the warm compress (a moist heating pad that has a 1 hour auto shut-off) while I slept that night. Went to bed at about 11 and I woke up at around 4ish with regular intense contractions. If your body is ready, the combination of things might just put it into labor. Just some ideas.
Hope it picks up for you soon!

Update please...any progress?

Beth, I am so trying that this weekend. I know that I am still early at only 38 weeks but I get so paranoid that something is wrong with her whenever I do not feel movement that I am driving myself insane!!

Beth...nipple stimulation...you mean as if I was pumping milk right? I will go for a walk today, though I don't have a breastpump yet Sad

So I can squeeze the girls until something gives! Sound advice, I'll try it!

Jessica - Castor Oil - squat so far in terms of no diarrhoea, no labour, no baby but some contractions, loss of some, if not all, mucus plug. My guts are made of steel....probably why the baby's still in there!

Otherwise, I am SOOOOO frustrated today with the midwives. It seems everytime I ask for something, I'm discouraged from it. 2 weeks ago, I said to one "is it worth me having my cervix checked" - she says, I can do it but it won't help me or help you if I did because it can be up to three weeks before the baby is here...I could have said "do it please" but her body language kinda put me off.

Then I have my 40 week appt this week...different midwife and she happily checks my cervix...talks about induction between 41-42 weeks and I come home and find out about membrane sweeping from this board...

And then I call them today asking if I could go in today for it and the midwife on the early shift (I called at 6am, who needs sleep) says well it could certainly break your waters in 24 hours but doesn't necessarily mean you'll go into labour so you might have to be induced anyway. She says call after 9am when Susan is on duty (same midwife who checked my cervix this week) - I call and she is all, well usually it needs to be done a few times from 37 weeks etc etc so doing it today won't really help, or there's no office visit today (I go to the clinic where the midwives go 3 days a week and I called her at the hospital today).

Again, turned off.

I feel so discouraged...the baby isn't small, she's getting bigger (gained 6lbs this week since last Wednesday, though I think most of that is water) and it doesn't seem like anyone wants to help me get her out without having to go through a Pitocin induction, that can distress the baby possibly leading to a c-section or delivering a postmature baby who's head/body is bigger than it is now, risking injury to her as she comes out or tries to etc etc...

Maybe I'm reading too much into this and fretting and getting my knickers in a twist for nothing?

Bugger it, just gonna let it go and let baby girl come when she wants - as I should.

God, I'm so restless, I kinda hate me for it actually. Why can't I just let baby girl do it in her own time....grrrrrrr.

Shoot me please someone Sad

Don't beat yourself up...being pregnant is HARD and you are done understandably. I think that it is a very strong person who adores being pregnant who can wait and not do anything. Plus, everything you are asking for/about is natural methods...it's not like you are starting your own IV for pitocin or requesting for them to do anything more like that.

Hell, I'm so desperate I pretty much MADE DH dtd last night! He was freaking out the whole time and refused to put it in all the way hahahaha said if the doc can feel her head with his fingers his wanger was gonna touch her too! LOL!

That is freaking hilarious! I would love to DTD (if it works to bring on labor) but there is no way that I could get up the desire to do it. My sister (had her baby 7 weeks ago) told me that in her last week her DH told her that he felt "used". Made me laugh, I think my DH would love to feel used in that way.

Don't feel bad, girls. I know how miserable the last weeks are! You know it will happen soon, but you want it NOW.
Shoobie, this website gives a general overview of using nipple stimulation to start or intensify labor. I had a membrane sweep Friday, did all the stuff I mentioned on Saturday, then had her on Sunday. I do think that it was a combination of my body being ready and everything else combined. I was 2 cm and 70% effaced when they did the sweep (first and only sweep at 39W 5D). I know MWs are good about letting your body take it's time, but since you're past your EDD, I'd think that a sweep would be a definite first choice over the Pitocin. :dontknow: I do know that there were some studies that indicated it could increase risk of your water breaking and putting you "on the clock".
Jessica, I will have my cell phone with me! Smile

Lol, thanks for the encouraging words, girls. Helps a lot.

DTD - yes, DH also laughingly said "You're just using me for sex!" Never mind the fact that he's chaffed down there from the heat and walking and I've given him our baby girl's diaper cream to use on his bits! And this is what I get for payment, pfffffff

I have an appointment on Monday morning to check on the baby - NSP test or NPS...forgot (duh)...if they talk about induction, I'll ask for the sweep...again.

That is, if she hasn't arrived this weekend on her own...c'mon baby girl, let's go! lol

oh Hon I am so sorry you are not feeling comfortable with your Midwives or only some. I wish our babies would cooperate with us. I was so happy Friday, but i know what you mean about possible induction leading to c section which is why i choose to go to a Mw in the first place.

They already scheduled my NST and ultrasound, for Monday and again for Wednesday, and my induction for Friday 6 am. its like oh thanks for asking what time appointments i want, and what are my options here???

well I am happy that you lost your plug and I hope things get rolling for you soon, it seems as if i have stalled.
