Poop?

OKay, lets talk poop.

So, Evie only had a couple of days of the tar poop and that transitioned into the melted chocolate poop.. then became the standard seedy yellow poop. All seemed great except that she only pooped at night and about 6-10 times each night.

Then she pooped Wed afternoon and then nothing since. It's now Fri late afternoon and she's acting like she's in some discomfort. She has been grunting and baring down and passing gas, but only little skid marks have come out of her. I've been massaging her belly and doing knee to belly exercises with her, swaddling her with her feet and legs near her body... I guess next step will be to check her temperature rectally. She's staring to worry me.

One of the girls on here her daughter got constipated and she was BF'd. I'm thinking it was Cassandra? Have you tried checking her temp with a rectal thermometer? Maybe that might get things moving. I think it's normal for BF babies to go awhile without pooping but from what I've read, it's too early for that.....I could be completely wrong though.

But when in doubt, call the doctor!

Yes, it is too early for that. I believe she is constipated. I was put on extra iron for my hemorrhaging, but I didn't need the colace to prevent constipation in myself. I didn't even think about constipation in Evie. So I've stopped taking the iron (my bleeding is all but gone, anyway) and I've called my mom to come keep Daniel out of the way so I can stimulate a bowel movement.

Taking their temperatures rectally never has caused a bm in my baby's before and always has the nurses going "wow" when they witness that themselves during check ups. So I'm just going to dip a q-tip in olive oil and insert it a short ways, then rotate it in a circular motion to stimulate the rectal muscles.

If it doesn't work, then I will take her to the walk-in clinic. But I'm pretty sure it will work.

Thanks Cassandra!

Yeah, she's constipated.. but not blocked. Sad

I lubed up a qtip with olive oil and inserted it a short ways, then rotated it to stimulate, then I removed the qtip and waited. About 30 seconds later, nothing. So I tried again. Then I waited. About 30 seconds later she started pooping. But it didn't look like anything came out other than normal poop (for this age). She pooped for a bit with me pushing against her belly with her knees.. but it still seemed she was struggling to get the poop out and I would definitely say it was NOT 3 days worth of poop. Sad

I considered it a good start, but she's back at the grunting and fussing with no relief other than tiny little skid marks. Sad

I think I'm gonna repeat it tonight after putting Daniel to bed (DH took DS#1 camping, so it's just me, the two year old and Evie).

I do feel better now that she's pooped at least a little, but this rather sucks. Sad

I'm not sure if this makes any difference, but with our first we had the same sort of problem. He would get SO red from trying to push but he wouldn't always get anything out. I talked to his ped and they told me that some babies just need to figure out how to poop. They just need to hone in on the right muscles and that he'd eventually get it. Its possible that now she is more aware of having to poop and is trying to, but can't quite figure it out just yet? Its good that she did poop and that it didn't look like she is constipated. Hopefully it gets better soon!

Thanks, Jaimie. That makes me more relieved. I will just let her do her thing today. I didn't stimulate last night, I was too tired and she seemed mostly content.

She has her 2 week check up tomorrow and I will bring it up with the doctor.

So I mentioned her pooping issue to the doc today at her 2 week check up. Everything looks great with Evie (we are waiting on the blood screening they did today still) and so the doc said to give her 5ml of water a couple of times each day not to exceed 1oz. And she prescribed a glycerin suppository (that I wasn't able to pick up from the pharmacy yet).

If it doesn't get better in a couple of days I'm supposed to call the doc and let her know.

Update:

I picked up the suppository.. only they didn't have them so they gave me a box of enemas meant for kids ages 2-6 and told me to use about half the amount in each individual bulb.

I used one Tuesday afternoon and she pooped a little bit and then nothing. So this evening I used another one and pushed a little bit more of the bulb contents and holy moly did she ever poop!!! I put a size 6 diaper underneath her before using it and then had to swap it out with a clean one. I filled 2 of them!

I am supposed to call the doc tomorrow afternoon with an update if she hasn't pooped on her own yet (without the enema prompting). I'm praying that she does poop cause I don't know what is next if she doesn't. Sad

Update please!! I am curious how Evie is doing.

Lily poops a few times a day but we get lots of the "skid marks" ones that you described. I will mention it to her Dr. when we go back on Tuesday. I would think nothing of it but since you mentioned it as a possible thing and Lily screams for hours I wonder if it is maybe related.

Well, she FINALLY pooped today. 1 little diaper full. It was very normal looking yellow & seedy poop. Just like it's supposed to be for a breast fed baby.

Last night she had quite a few really deep grunts where she got red in the face and made REALLY stinky gas. This morning she had a little ring of yellow around her anus like she pooped a little and it dried. But then this afternoon after I fed her, I smelled butter popcorn. This is a classic smell for my baby's poop. Her brother had the same smell and the stinky gas and anything up to this point has been far from sweet and buttery smelling. As soon as I smelled that I KNEW she produced.

I'm hoping we can keep this up. I'm sooo happy she finally pooped. It made my facebook status. Lol

BTW, the poop she had during prompting was thick and stringy like it was filled with mucous. This poop she had today was not. It was thin and slippery.

:clappy:

So silly to be so giddy over poop, but I was really getting worried that they'd have to do a colonoscopy on my little baby.

Congratulations on the poop!

Ours is the seedy, yellow/orange poop so that makes me feel better.
