weaning

I thought there was an allergy forum, but i can't find it....anyways....
O has a dairy and soy sensitivity and we're holding off introducing dairy until 15/18months. My goal has been to breastfeed until July (1yr). Now that we're a few days away, i'm thinking i should start the weaning process. I'm soooooo over pumping at work, so i know that will be the first thing to go and i'll wait on the nursing before bed and during the night. My question is, we're giving her rice milk (already talked to the peds) but, is there something else i should be making sure she's getting? I feel like dairy has a bit of protein in it and calcium, rice milk is like watered down rice...lol. what do other feed their kids if they are not doing dairy or soy?

Our ped likes the babies to get most of their nutrition from foods by a year old... iron from veggies-- a balanced diet. Alex eats pleanty and still nurses 1-4 times daily (I still nurse on demand) and always 3-4 times a night (not for long and we both can sleep through it). Peds said if he ends up totally self-weaning (which I am allowing him to self-wean) that I can start him on a cup of whole milk a day and that's it... it wasn't meant to be a meal, just a filler.

Lilly just had her 10 month baby well check, and I was concerned about her eating habits, but our Dr. is so wonderful.Lilly is really picky right now. He told me not to worry and just keep trying things with her, and to feed her what she will eat. he said lots of babies are like that and it drive parents nuts, but as long as she is growing and doing well let, to her eat all the sweet potatoes she wants.( her favorite).
I thot we might have had a reaction to dairy but he said that if she did i would know it right away the second time we gave it to her, either right away or with in 130 min. he told me not to worry so much. It was yogurt, and she had her second ever diaper rash but he told me that most are from virus that they catch and it passes fairly quickly.

As far as the weaning goes i plan on nursing until Lilly weans her self, many reasons one being that she has never really been sick and the other that i have had some difficulties with blocked ducts on one side that won't resolve themselves unless i nurse.

If i were you i would maybe cut back on pumping and hopefully your body will adjust with out too much difficulty.
and just keep nursing your lo at your normal times. how long does she go between nursing? how much solids does she eat?
if I may ask is there a reason why you are wanting to wean right at one year?

I saw the allergy thread a while back maybe i can find it again.

I guess the concern i have is that if i'm not giving her my milk during the day anymore, she's not getting those calories/nuterients and she certainly won't be getting it from rice milk. We're not doing dairy until she's older since she had HORRIBLE reaction if it was in my diet, which i have cut out dairy and soy..... it makes me feel better though that one might only get a glass of milk during the day and the rest from foods.
I am not cutting out nursing completely, i just am really sick of pumping at work...my goal was always to make it a year and then do night and morning nursing. I'm hoping my body will adjust, but i'm stopping fenugreek cuz it's really causing me some stomach issues... so i'm not sure what will happen with my supply. She still wakes up during the night and so i plan on nursing her at night before bed, during the night if she wakes up and when she wakes up in the AM. When she's with me i nurse her on demand.
We are planning on doing treatments again, so i can't nurse her during that.... Oh and she's also just started BITING...NOT COOL.

She gets breakfast, which is usually oatmeal with some fruit mixed in.
a snack
lunch

dinner

I have no clue what to give to Evie cause she is also very sensitive to when I have dairy. Lately she's been okay when I have cheese. She's been having issues again since we started table foods with her. Our problem is constipation.

Anyway, I hear that goats milk is something that might work, but it's expensive and I'm scared to try it.

I really want to see an allergist, but I'm not sure there are any in this area and ......

We see an allergist next week, so I'm not making any changes until after that appt. We know she is sensitive or allergic to both milk products and peanuts. Not sure if anything else. We have an appt with the nutritionist this week as requied by WIC when there is a dairy allergy. I'll let you know what either of them say.

There is a good overview of allergies here, pay speciall attention to the section "is your food-allergic child's diet nutritionally blanaced"

My understanding is that rice milk is not nutritionally sufficient. I also understand that goat's milk is rarely an option because a huge majority allergic to cow's milk are also allergic to goat's milk. There are toddler formula's out there. I'd highly recomend talking to an experienced allergiest and/or nutritionist.

i have her 1 yr appt next week, so i'll ask the dr how to proceed with checking out a dairy and soy intolerance - i don't think it's an allergy only cuz she doesn't break out in a rash or anything....it's GI based.
I still give her my milk and she only gets rice milk or water at lunch - i then nurse her from when i get home from work - til i leave. She gets a bottle of my milk during the day....i am only pumping once at work now though and i'm not really pumping at home. i think it's just the whole weaning process i'm not sure how to do, weither its formula or breastmilk - at some point kids stop relying on it....

Oh, I understand that weaning happens at some point Smile :) Smile Normally they switch to cow's milk though, so the problem becomes finding another alternative if you can't use cow's milk. Cow's whole milk has lots of the important nutrients that they need, rice milk just doesn't have as much. At least that is my understanding Smile Natalie is already starting to drink more and more soy milk. I give her a little with each meal. Somtimes we skip a breastfeeding session all together and she just has a sippy cup with soy milk. When I weaned Andrea, I just cut out one nursing session at time and was sure to add in more milk to her daily diet to compensate. I was told 16oz a day as a minumum.

I was really disapointed yesterday. Nutritionist appointment was canceled, so I still have no idea if we are doing the right things are not. Soy milk seems pretty close to milk, but I don't really know and get nervous. I'm pretty much refusing to completely wean until I know what I'm doing.... might be a long time Lol

How did you get her to take a sippy cup? Poetrie just had her 1 yr check up and we discussed transitioning her to soy because of all of the trouble she had earlier on and I am so afraid that she will have trouble being on cow's milk. The pediatrician said it was fine.

We hard to try a couple of cups until we found one that she would use. Turns out that she just gets mad at the soft nipple cups and uses the hard plastic ones perfectly. For Natalie, she shape of the cup doesn't matter, just needs a hard tip that doesn't mash down when she goes to suck on it. We give her one with each meal. At first it was just water, maybe an ounce or two. Now it is often soy milk. The occupational therapist wants us using regular cups more, but then she just dumps them for fun, so I'm in favor of sippies Lol
