We're Home! Mikayla's birth story

I started writing this yesterday and then got distracted and couldn't finish...we got home yesterday at about noon or so and she did great sleeping last night! Woke every 3 hours to eat and went right back to bed!

So, I had my appt on Monday and the doc did the stretch, and not the sweep. As you ladies know, I was so bummed that she didn't do the sweep because I figured that would be the only way I'd go into labor before my next appt Monday the 8th. So, I had contractions Monday night after the appointment for a bit, but they died off completely Tuesday later in the morning. I had some spotting Tuesday, so I called the doctor to see if I could get in and see somebody that would maybe check me and see if I had dilated a little more and then maybe do a sweep. They told me to watch it and keep an eye on the contractions and if they got to be 5-7 mins apart for an hour, to call and they'd have me come in. So, all day Tuesday I had nothing...I mostly did some stuff around the house. We got dinner at home because our little guy ended up getting sick Sad So, we ate and I started having some tightening around 8:30 or so but didn't think anything of it. I put our guy to bed and told my hubs that I was having some tightening and they were kind of uncomfortable. He said how far apart are they, and I said 'I have no idea...I wasn't really paying attention.' I had the same tightening on Monday night through Tuesday morning and it never turned into anything, so I didn't really think to time them figuring they'd just die off again. So, I started timing them and they were around 10-11 mins apart. I finally decided to just go to bed around 10:00 and my husband said I should prolly get a bag ready. I disagreed but he said it would be better to get it ready now even if I didn't need it, than to wait until later when I was in pain. So I got some stuff together and got into bed. Of course, the second I got into bed our little guy woke up and was all stuffed up and not feeling good, so I brought him into bed with us. My husband took a shower and got to bed around 11 or so. At about midnight, we moved Ryder into his own bed and about a half hour later I started to really have contractions that were painful. I started timing them and they were about 2-5 mins apart. I told my husband to call my mom and I got up and went to the bathroom. While in there, I had 2 contractions, and then another one in the bedroom after. I was getting nervous that I was getting kind of close. We got to the hospital at about 1:45 or so, got checked in and to the room by 2. The nurse checked me and I was already 5. She started the IV for my epidural and I had to wait for that to empty before she could order it. It took maybe 45 minutes to empty the IV, so they put the order in for my epidural and by about 3ish I think, I was all set! Thankfully they got it in when they did because I was really starting to have a hard time with them. After each one, I was shaking and I was starting to feel nauseous. Right after the epi, my nurse checked me and I was 8cm! My hubs called my mom who had my dad come relieve her so she could make it to the hospital in time. At 4:30, my nurse came in and checked me and I was ready. She called my doctor and I started pushing a little before 5. Mikayla Rose was born at 5:20am on 8/3 at an even 8lbs and 20.25" long!

I was so relieved to not push forever with her! I pushed for over 2 hours with my first and they still had to use the suction to get him out Sad I am barely sore at all, even though I did tear a little. My doctor said it was about a 1 degree tear. Nursing was going well initially, but it has fallen off a bit at this point. She was really tongue tied, it actually went right to the tip of her tongue. When her ped saw her yesterday before we left, he mentioned about having it cut, so we did that before leaving. We are having some latching problems and have a consult with the LC today at 1, after her ped appt at noon because she hasn't had a stool since 11pm on 8/3. The nursery nurses told us to supplement with formula last night because I'm way too sore to nurse her from all the latching problems.

And here she is Smile

She's so sweet! I'm glad your labor and delivery were smooth. Smile

If you don't want to use formula, you can try a nipple shield. It's way easier on your nipples and easier for some babies to latch. I used one for the first month with DD and then transitioned her to the breast.

I haven't tried the shield yet. We went and met with the LC today and she said that its going to take time for me to heal a bit. She said I could get a pump and do it on low for 24 hrs to keep stimulation and keep my milk coming and then go back and nurse her. Thats what I've decided to do. At the consult (1:00), I nursed her for 20 on one side and 15 on the other and I'm still sore at 4:30 Sad They are already scabbing over, so I really need to let that heal before moving on, otherwise I'll be way to discouraged to continue. She was definitely not latching well at all! Hopefully we get that squared away soon. Otherwise, things are going great! And this is a small issue that will hopefully be resolved in a day or so.

May everyone have such easy labor!! I almost texted you today to see how things were, but then I jumped on here first and saw your post Smile

I had a really hard time bf'ing DD too and my nips bled and scabbed terrible. I pumped thru it mostly but it was rough!

This chick told me (Who doesn't have kids and has never been preg. BTW) that I should have rubbed a rough washcloth on them for weeks before to 'toughen' them up. I told her hell no and once she got pregnant and did it she could let me know how it went! Ridiculous!!

Congrats on your little princess! What a short and sweet birth story! My second was definitely much easier than my first... and he was also tongue tied (thankfully I had DH take him in for the cut, I can't handle stuff like that!)!!

Question from a first timer...what was cut?

Congratulations!! So glad that the birth went smoothly. She is adorable. I hope you can get the bfing issues cleared up, I understand how frustrating it is. Just don't give up, even if you have to pump for a bit and give it to her in a bottle.

The thing that connects her tongue to her mouth...I think the procedure was called a fenneloctomy (spelling is WAY off I'm sure). They just cut that back on the top/bottom so she'll be able to extend her tongue. My hubs is tongue tied so that must be where she got it. His is not nearly as bad as hers was...he can stick his tongue out a little bit, the ped said she wouldn't be able to extend her tongue past her lips, and it could have an impact on her speech.

Congrats on your little sweetie!! Smile I just wanted to add my 'been there too' support. My son Seth is tounge tied and we had a horrible time nursing too. I was bleeding and scabbed. I went to pumping and even that was painful (he refused to take formula). Sad I second the nipple shield suggestion. Even with painful nips, it is a godsend! I didn't have ANY pain once I started using it. You can find a Medela one at Target for about $6. Good luck with what ever option you choose.
