    Default Need your help ladies!

    Hi all,

I asked the doctor about this and haven't gotten an answer just yet. But I know yall have went through many trials with your preemies. I didn't get a good report last week from her NICU dr. She's 8lbs 10oz and 21 inches. The dr said she gained 18grams a day but wants to see her at 30grams a day. At 8lbs 10oz that's the weight most newborns babies are and she's almost 11 weeks. Her feedings have become odd. This started with Isabella late last month and has gotten worse in the last couple of weeks. I give her the breast at first but I don't produce much and also give her a bottle. With her bottles lately she has started gagging half way thru a bottle. She gets very upset and hard to settle down. It's like she totally forgets how to close her mouth and finish the bottle? That's what I told her dr. Have any of your babies ever done this. I am so scared she's not gaining weight and might start losing weight if she doesn't start eating more. If you made it through this long plea, thank you in advance.

I think it is fairly normal for a preemie to have reflux. Can you ask about her seeing a GI specialist or ask about a thickner being added to her bottles? Also, try making sure she is sitting up while eating.

Sorry you are having to go through this, but you will make it!

    :HUGS: as well!!
I don't make it over here much anymore and it's been 5 years since my preemie was a baby (WOW!), but I also agree with the thoughts of possibly reflux? Also, my DD was aspirating and needed to be on thickener as mentioned. At that time, there were only 1 or 2 special gel thickeners that were compatible with breast milk. Also, when you give her bottles is she getting straight BM or formula? I forget what the calorie content is per oz ... 20 or 22 cal, and I think we had DD on 24 or 26 cal/oz for a while after she came home to ensure weight gain with the calories that they burn while eating! We also had several visits with a pediatric GI specialist that first year. Good luck - hope this info isn't too outdated

No ladies that helped. What you said is what the doc said today. They are going to give her a week with me trying a couple different things during feedings. Being very quiet and keeping her tightly wrapped. They said if I'm still having problems with the feedings by next week we will move on to thickerns. She was very happy about her suck though lol It's just that she's still immature and has trouble with doing two things at once, the most important two things for a baby. Breathing while eating...Thank yall so much!!!

Have you tried feeding her on her side? She would lay across your lap with her head on your legs. If she is gagging or almost aspirating, this is a safer way for her to eat and may help the gagging. Just a thought. We had to feed Sarafina on her side for a little while. She was also placed on a higher calorie formula. I did not breastfeed though. She also was not a preemie, but she was very small for gestational age.

Sorry to respond so late, but since you are both breast and bottle, perhaps she had developed a preference for breast over bottle. Try different bottles and make sure you have a SLOW flow nipple. I second, third, or whAtever number the fact of preemies+acid reflux. Make sure the head of where she sleeps is raised. With Robby we put a book under his Moses basket, and books under the feet of the head of the bed. Also, Robby had issues with dairy, so once I cut dairy out of my diet, the acid reflux cleared up greatly (that said, I think at age 4 it is back again). For weight gain, the high cal stuff didn't do it for Robby near as well as when I pumped off extra breast milk, let it sit to separate in the frig and then skim the top off and mix with another bottle of breast milk.
