Progesterone Shots

Hello

Sorry I have been extremly MIA of late. Work has been crazy and I am also now 13 weeks and 2 days pregnant with our 2nd baby.
We were hoping for close together. This close was a bit unexpected but we are happy.

I do have a question though.

After meeting with my OB yesterday they said Progesterone Shots maybe needed to help prevent another preemie. Just wondering if anyone has experience with them and did it help or not.

I have an appointment with the maternal fetal medicine clinic next Tuesday.

Thanks much in advance.

Congratulations! I personally do not have experience with those shots. If you read back further posts you might find some more useful information.

I too have been nominated to start getting them at 16 weeks. I haven't had them before either. Only info I was given was I get them 1x week and can be done home or office.

Congratulations on expecting again! Smile

There are a handful of ladies on this site who have done the 17P injections with subsequent pregnancies. There is a thread here where many of them posted.

My first DS was born 6.5 weeks early after PROM. My doctor and I discussed the option to do the shots when I became pregnant with #2 but ultimately I decided it wasn't for me. My doctor's opinion was it's one of those things that maybe it helps, maybe it doesn't and doesn't seem to be any risk with it so not a bad thing but wasn't too into bothering with it and just said it was up to me. I carried DS2 longer and he was born at 2 days shy of 37 weeks, perfectly healthy with no NICU stay. My labor started the same way the second time with ROM then after a couple of hours contractions started up. So I am an example of success (I figured almost term with a take-home baby to be success ;)) with a subsequent pregnancy and no shots.

HTH's some and good luck to you whatever you decide. I hope you have a HH9Ms Smile

I had the 17P shots during my second pregnancy. I still had preterm labor beginning at 24 weeks with him, just like with my first. And he was born right at 34 weeks, just like my first. So, I'm not sure if they helped, but I felt more reassurance taking them. And I can't help but wonder if he'd been born even earlier had I not taken them. So, I definitely don't think they hurt, and I plan to take them with my next pregnancy as well. DH learned how to give them to me, and they weren't bad at all.

I used the 17P shots with my 2nd pregnancy also. My first was born at 26 weeks, unexpectedly. My 2nd was born 40 wks plus 4 days!!!!!! Definitely a success story - but not sure I can contribute it ALL to the 17P. We were extra cautious with my 2nd pregnancy. In addition to the 17P, also was on modified bedrest from 20 weeks - about 33 weeks. I spent a night in the hospital at 24 weeks - I felt it was PTL, but the OB's didn't necessarily think so - more so that I have an irritable uterus and did take Procardia throughout a good majority of my pregnancy.
I would definitely do the 17P again with any other pregnancies - like Julie said, I really don't think they hurt matters at all. And likely, helped matters in my case!!
Good luck!

Will do
So far the first one was rather painful but thankfully it only lasted a few hours.

DS1 was 34 weeks 2 days PROM.
DS2 was 37 weeks 5 days. I did P17 shots. Was put on bed rest at 20 weeks due to cervical funneling and shortening. PTL at 24, 28, and 32 weeks. I was dilated to 3 cm at 28 weeks and to 5 at 32 weeks.

So what's the factors about getting them covered threw insurance? My dr said they might not be covered since my premies weren't born 32 weeks or less?

I am not really sure. I called my insurance and they cover them 100% if I get them at the doctor's office. However my OB doesn't do it that way I have to get them from the pharmacy and then bring them in to get the shots. So I have to pay a rx copay.

I'm still trying to get them covered. They want me to start them next week. I called my health insurance, and they said it was covered. They didn't receive any paperwork from my dr yet. My stupid prescription insurance (yes I have 2 different companies) said the paperwork wasn't filled out right. I called the ob and complained. She is making me her all day project today. Hopefully it will get cleared up today. Walgreens keeps calling me and telling me my paperwork is still pending. Well I would of send the darn paperwork in 10x if I had possession of it!!

When I was pregnant with DD my doc wanted me on the shots also. But, only one place in the area carried/despensed them, and they didnt take my INS. We couldnt afford them, so I had to for go them. This time around my OB hasnt even mentioned them. I am lucky in the fact that even though I have had lots of preterm contractions starting at 30, 28, and then 24 weeks, the earliest I started to dilate was 33 weeks with DD... and we were able to stop it with being in the hospital for 5 days, 3 of those on Mag. Sulfate... man I hate that stuff Sad

My MW wants me to start them at my next appointment at the end of the month. I had a high risk condition that put me at risk for preterm labor and naturally have that risk as I was a premie myself. I'm showing symptoms of my high risk condition again so the 17P shots idea is all the more reassuring. My DD was born at 36 weeks and was perfect, but I started having contractions at 25 weeks and was on strict bed rest most of my pregnancy, spent two stints in l&d at 33 and 35 weeks. I hope they are less painful for you next time and that they allow you to have a non eventful full term pregnancy!

Had shot #3 today and didn't even feel it!! I guess it all depends on who gives it..

And for some good news, we are having a boy and he's measuring ahead of schedule!!
