What was the hardest part...

What was the hardest part about having a preemie? What challenges have you experienced that people of non preemies would not understand?

I'm going to start off saying that we had no serious health issues to worry about...

The hardest part after birth was not feeling like a mom. I had no baby around. I had to ask permission to visit and hold. Holding was restricted the first couple days. To see her we had to drive 30 minutes (people next to us drove 3 hours!) Because of our older child we only did one feeding and I felt neglectful of both. I felt resentful coming ob the boards and people complaining about lack of bonding time after birth or family taking over and holding the baby too much.

As the hospital time is in the past, now I have issues with her age. I never know if I should use her adjusted age or not. My ILs think adjusted age is BS. My daughter is 7 months but developmentally is 5 months and I see that at the baby groups. I'm not worried about her development but I have had people question her age when I give the unadjusted one.

I also think about the future. I want a 3rd child. Will this happen again? was it random. or am I now at higher risk?
