    Default Making baby food

    To the ladies who made their baby food...how much did you make in the starting. I'm trying to decide how of a stock pile they should have. Also what food did your little ones like most. And lastly did you make your own cereal?

    I did make some of my own cereal with my first, I just took some rolled oats and ground them in my mini food processor. Then the others, I skipped cereal all together. But I am sure you could make your own grinding rice, etc.

    I made all my own baby food, never bought one jar between four kids. The color is gorgeous, the taste is tasty (I could eat it myself), and it saved a ton.

    I would cook a small pot of whatever veggie/fruit I was making, then put it in the blender, add water, and sometimes a little fruit juice (100% only) and grind away. I loved it because it was fresh, no added salt, preservatives , etc. Then you put the ground up portion in ice cube trays and freeze it, then put it in freezer bags and label with the date/contents. Then I would thaw 1-2 cubes at a time. With twins I usually did 3 cubes in the beginning. I could also do fruits and veggies you can not always get jarred, like broccoli, cauliflower, etc. All my kids eat broccoli still!

    Bananas and avocados are great starter foods because they are very bland and already mushy. I also usually added hand expressed breast milk (on the spot) into their first foods, as much as I could get out. lol.

    It seems like one blender full usually made 2.5 ice cube trays, so you may want to start smaller until you know how well they will take something. If you have any other questions, I'd love to help.

    I've made so far carrots, butternut squash (which made 3 trays) and peas and then mangos, blackberries and blueberries. I made more veggies then fruit because I know that you should start with. I have broccoli and cauliflower and sweet potatoes to make tomorrow and also pears and apples.

    Rachel- I put formula in before freezing, would you recommended I hold off until I thaw the food. And secondly. I bought a book that said to make banana fresh instead of freezing, is that what you did? I figured 1 cube/baby twice a day. Is that more then I need?

    Good luck. I am not a cook. Seriously, I hate it. So, I bought all of our baby food. The idea of cooking more food on top of what I was already cooking for the rest of my family overwhelmed me. I wish I liked to cook. Wouldn't that make life so much easier?

    I always admire moms that cook their own baby food? I always wonder how they find the time. Good for you Krista!

    Krista, 1 cube per baby twice a day should work for a while. I would wait to add liquid until it is thawed, then you can get it to just the right consistency per baby and their developing tastes/tolerance. Bananas I always did fresh. It was also easily transportable baby food. But I did bring my homemade baby food lots of places. I LOVED this spoon http://www.amazon.com/Boon-Squirt-Di...552625&sr=8-10

    I would put two cubes in it before I left somewhere and they would typically be thawed by the time babies needed to eat.


    Mel.. I do not really love to cook either. But somehow I really enjoyed making baby food. It really only took about 15min from cook to blender to ice cube trays.

    And Krista, I also transtioned fairly quick to blendering our meals, spaghetti, etc. I wouldn't completely puree it, but I would freeze it in icecube trays any time we had leftovers, or I would make extra to freeze for them for lunches and what not. I think one of my fave things of making baby foods is that I could make it as thin or thick as I wanted, and my babies were eating complete table food with no problems well before they were one.

    Mel- I keep getting "good for you for making your own food, it's do much healthier etc etc. but the real reason I am making it is because jar food avg. about 1$ a bottle and if they are going through a jar a feeding (like my daughter) then its going to get quite costly. I am only doing it because I am cheap!!!

    Rachel- was there certain foods you found you got your "best Bang for your buck". I made butternut squash and got a lot of out it. I'm assuming pumpkin is like that. I'm finding you need a lot more fruit to fill up your trays. Did you find this?

    I honestly did not pay much attention. lol. I did just buy regular applesauce to feed them, that was fairly cheap. I did not always buy fresh fruit, usually I bought the big frozen mixed bag of fruit from Sam's Club, I used it for smoothies too. I also would buy canned fruit too, still way cheaper than jarred baby food.

    I made all of ours. Like Rachel, I just baked or steamed veggies, then put in the blender. I even added spices that we usually use in our house as recommended by my doctor, so the kids would get used to different tastes. For fruits, I just put in the blender. We did ice cube trays as well. It was very easy!
