Multiples FAQ

So I was thinking (I know- dangerous) that we answer the same questions over & over a lot. Obviously we don't mind it much since we're all still answering the questions, but I thought maybe we could put together a post with the answers so the preggos & future preggos could check it out. So here's a bunch of questions I thought of, I'm sure there's more but I figure it's a start... So if you'd like to answer & maybe one of our sweet attractive Mod ladies would sticky it? Dirol

Kids: Gabrielle, Caroline & Elizabeth (triplets)

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 26/27

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: spontaneous

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: yup

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 8w

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: flutters about 15w, big kicks & punches about 20w

Did you have bad morning sickness? Ant tips?:
I had major food aversions. Everything smelled so bad I was afraid to try to eat it. By 15w or so my Dr prescribed some meds to help with the nausea.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why:
I was referred to a Peri at 8w & saw him the remainder of my pregnancy, my normal OB always referred out multiples

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?:
I had bi-weekly appts from 8w on

How often did you have u/s’s?:
I had a level II u/s 1x a month & “quick peek” ones in the Dr’s office 1x a month

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?:
My Dr wanted me to gain 75lbs, I only managed to gain 24lbs

When did you find out the babies sexes?
We found out 1 at 16w & the other 2 at 20w

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why:
I was put on home bed rest at 24w due to a shortening cervix & put on hospital bed rest at 29w for PIH & no measurable cervix.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?:
Watched a lot of TV & became 100% addicted to pg.org Lol The laptop was a live saver!

How far along were you when you delivered?:
31w 1d

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?:
We delivered early because G & E had not grown from 28w-31w, also G had cord blood flow issues (giant knot) & I went into labor Lol I was scheduled for the next day already.

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?:
C-section. The Dr almost gave me a choice- for about 30sec, before I was wheeled to the OR.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?:
G spent 5w in the NICU growing & learning to eat, she also had small apnea/bradicardia episodes. C spent 10w in the NICU she had a harder time getting past the A’s & B’s. E spent 5w 3d in the NICU for the same reasons. They were all transferred from the level 3 to the level 2 unit after a week.

Did you breastfeed?:
I tried but was never successful. Latch & supply issues. I stopped pumping at 6w.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?:
1 frat (E) 2 questionable but most likely frat (G &C)

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?:
Good pillows, the book- “What to expect when your expecting twins triplets or quads”, lots & lots of rest Biggrin

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?:
Good swaddling blankets, I could not have survived without bouncy seats & bottle props, a stroller to get you out once in a while Lol

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?:
Personally I found the swaddle me or miracle blankets a waste of money, they were way too big for my girls & by the time the girls were big enough to fit in them I had the folds down

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?:
glad to have 3 swings & bouncy seats, didn’t really need 3 exersaucers

Pregnancy after multiples?:
the magic 8 ball says- “outcome unlikely” ROFL

Pregnancy after multiples?: NO WAY! (I say that now because I am sleep deprived - ask me in a few years - hehe)!

Anything else you’d like to add?: The first few weeks are very, very hard - especially if you are trying to do it alone while DH is at work. Don't be afraid to ask people for help - it doesn't mean you're not a good mom if you can't handle it! It is much more enjoyable if you have an extra set of hands. The first 8 weeks are a blur - but it is so worth it to see their little faces smiling up at you from the crib!

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: Yes

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: We saw 2 heartbeats at 6 weeks, and three at 7 weeks

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: I guess around 16 weeks

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?:Not bad at all. Just nausea, no vomiting. I took B6 everyday as soon as I found out I was pregnant. My MIL, who is a midwife, suggested it to help with MS.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: Yes. I saw a perinatalogist for my entire pregnancy starting at 10 weeks, once my RE confirmed triplets.

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: I don't really remember. Maybe every 4 weeks at first, then 3 weeks, then my cervix started shortening so I had a sono two weeks in a row just before I was admitted for hospital bedrest. Then I saw a resident and an attending every day.

How often did you have u/s’s?: At every peri appt up until around 28 weeks.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? 50lbs.How much did you actually gain?: 50lbs.

When did you find out the babies sexes? At my 20 week Level II sono

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: Played on the internet, read books, watched TV, ate.

How far along were you when you delivered?: 33 weeks 2 days

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: Preemie. I delivered early due to preterm labor.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: Yes, all three. Madeline stayed for 2 weeks, Ian for 3 and Emma for 4. Maddie was off of all oxygen by the next day. They all needed time to learn suck/swallow. Ian and Emma were on oxygen for a bit longer, CPAP then high flow cannula. Ian had a hard time keeping his body temperature and Emma had severe reflux making it difficult for her to keep her feedings down and gain weight.

Did you breastfeed?: I pumped and BFed as much as I could for the first 8 weeks or so. Emma had to have thickened feeds, and Maddie had major nipple confusion issues. I eventually swtiched to BFing Ian exclusively because he was the only one who would latch on. He is still my booby boy at 7 months.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Fraternal

How often did you have u/s’s?: Every week starting at 25 weeks.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? 60 pounds. I gained 62 pounds.

When did you find out the babies sexes? At my 20 week ultrasound, I was 100% sure that Bri was a girl. Ari was curled up in a little ball and stayed that way for the entire pregnancy. We didn't know for sure that she was a girl until she was delivered.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: Read magazines/books, watched tv.

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 29

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: Spontaneous, two months off the pill

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: yes

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 8wks

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: 20wks

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: it was actually minimal, just like they say, eat a little all day. If I allowed my stomach to be empty, the nausea was pretty bad. Brach's Lemon Drops were a surprising stomach settling treat.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: yes, at 36 wks to determine if the boys were developed enough for delivery due to my developing preeclampsia

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: usual schedule, once a month until 7 months, then every two weeks after that, at 36 weeks, weekly visits would start, but I delivered

How often did you have u/s’s?: every visit until 20 weeks, then two additional ones after that at 32 and 36 to check on growth

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: no specific guidelines were given to me. I followed the advice of Dr. Barbara Luke's "What to Expect When You're Expecting Multiples" book for a woman of my height and BMI...my goal was to gain around 40 lbs. and I ended up gaining 49 total. A week after I delivered, I was down 30 lbs., mostly due to excessive fluid retention those last weeks

When did you find out the babies sexes? 20 wk Level II u/s

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: nope

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: N/A

How far along were you when you delivered?: 36 wks, 6 days

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: preeclampsia

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: c-section, my choice, the babies were both head down, but the stress of an induced labor with no guarantees of a vaginal delivery on me and the boys was too much to face

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: yes, 5 days (our entire hospital stay), they had a bit of heavy breathing immediately after delivery and received pressurized oxygen in the OR, but were fine on arrival in the NICU, they also had low blood sugars initially and were being administered IV fluids and antibiotics due to me being Group B Strep positive. They were off the IVs in a day, but were being kept for observation.

Did you breastfeed?: sort of...in the hospital, we fed using nipple shields to allow them to latch on, but on arriving home, they never successfully latched on without the shields and finally, didn't like the shields either. I decided to simply pump and then bottle feed...less tears and stress for all parties involved.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: fraternal, but very certainly brothers!

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Dr. Luke's book, Cheryl Lage's book, "Twinspiration", rest as much as possible ahead of delivery, if possible, prepare dinners to freeze for easy meals later, line up help!

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: bouncy seats, swaddling blankets, preemie clothing, a sense of humor, a sense of patience with yourself

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: nothing yet, although the swing isn't a big hit...

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: bouncy seats

Pregnancy after multiples?: at two weeks after delivery, no. Ask me again in a year.

Anything else you’d like to add?: Be patient--with yourself, your partner, your kids--you are all learning. Accept that the people around who want to help are helping, even if they don't do everything exactly the way you would. It's okay to cry with them too. Enjoy your babies--sometimes the laundry can wait!!

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: n/a

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: c-section - technically my choice, but come to find out would have had to have an emergency c-section to deliver baby b (olivia) anyway. My uterious grew around her head. No worries though - she was and is completely fine!

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: spontaneous

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: second

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 22 weeks at my first ultrasound

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: 16 weeks, but it was a second pregnancy.

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: YES! worse than with my singleton. Just know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Eat small snacks even if you don't think you can.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: I saw a specialist for two high-resolution ultrasounds. My regular O.B. ordered it simply because I was carrying twins, not because anything was wrong. He wanted to make sure their growth was on track and get a better look inside the babies to make sure they were O.K. and that my due date was accurate.

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: Once I hit 26 weeks it was every two weeks, then every week after 32 weeks.

How often did you have u/s’s?: Two in my regular O.B.'s office, and 2 at the specialist. Everything was fine with my babies so there didn't seem to be any reason for more.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: i was told 35-45 lbs. I gained 50, which was actually 15-20 less than with my singleton! Go figure! (no pun intended).

When did you find out the babies sexes? We found out about our boy at my regular O.B. during the 2nd. ultrasound (26 weeks?), then about the girl at our 1st high resolution ultrasound (28 weeks).

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: Yes, only because my doc prescribes it as a safety measure. He likes his multiples patients to be on modified bedrest starting at 26 weeks to help with the babies growth, even if things seem fine. Modified bedrest meaning 2 hours laying down, 1 hour up. It worked for me. I delivered two 6 pounders at 36 weeks Biggrin !

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: watched A LOT of T.V., checked in with pregnancy.org a lot and did other "twin" research on the computer, read books (novels and twin guide books), and cross-stitched.

How far along were you when you delivered?: 36 weeks exactly

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: My water broke

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: C-section because baby A was breech- We were both in agreement that that was the best thing.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: My girl spent a couple hours for low glucose. My boy spent 36 hours for low glucose and low body temperature.

Did you breastfeed?: Yes, and still am after 3 months. I had to supplement with formula for a few days because of the low glucose levels, but both babies were able to breastfeed well, too. I didn't get to breatfeed my boy until he was out of the NICU, but he took right to it, thankfully.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Frat, boy and girl

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Bouncy seats, swaddling blankets, good double stroller that allows you to attach car seat carriers, possibly swing or swings, depending on your babies take to them...(might want to start with one and test before spending money on another one. Neither of my babies liked the swing much, fortunately ours was borrowed. Other moms can only get their babies to sleep in a swing and find them VERY valuable). Also, a good nursing pillow if you are going to breasfeed. I recommend the EZ-2-Nurse pillow. One play-gym for floor and tummy time.

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: Bouncy seats, good nursing pillow (if nursing), and for me swaddling blankets....my babies were very good sleepers from the get-go because of the swaddling, but not all babies are that way.

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: bottle warmer (I nurse, but do bottle feedings of expressed milk regularly. It's so easy to warm them just in a hot cup of water). If formula feeding , a bottle warmer may be useful.

Pregnancy after multiples?: No. We had one child already and were only planning on having 2 total. We got a surprise bonus with pregnancy number 2! And I wouldn't have it any other way! Biggrin

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: No.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Fraternal

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Good books about twins & multiples; plus, "Happiest Baby on the Block" and "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" - those were my lifesavers Biggrin Also, buy diapers in advance and even some gift cards for yourself to BRUs, Target, etc for last-minute items!

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: 2 bouncies/portable swings; lots of kimono-style t-shirts (my kids lived in them the first few wks); Miracle blankets for swaddling (these were the only thing J & O couldn't get out of)

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: Steam sterilizer for bottles (just use dishwasher); complicated outfits (like dress/hat/bib/shoes/etc) for NBs...just get lots of footed zip-up sleepers!

Pregnancy after multiples?: Who knows? We're not doing anymore fert tmts, though.

Anything else you’d like to add?: Just take it one day at a time. I thought I wouldn't make it through the first month as I was so exhausted and just spent. But, you will def get through it!

Kids: Samuel (5-28-95), Moriah & Susannah (9-29-97), Abigail & Bethany (1-31-07)

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 27 and 36

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: both spontaneous

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: 2nd and 3rd

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 17 weeks and 8 weeks

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: around 16 weeks and then around 13 weeks I think

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: With the first set, it was kinda bad--I should have bought stock in Ritz crackers for as many as I ate. Smile Second time, not so much, but needed to keep eating throughout the day.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: First time, yes. I had pre-term labor and had to fly to a bigger city. I was monitored twice a week for four and a half weeks, until I could return to my own town. I saw the same guy once the second pregnancy, for the Nuchal test/ultrasound thingy.

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: Had regular appointments with both docs--every four weeks. Then had preterm labor first time (see above). Second time, saw him every two weeks once I hit 32 weeks, had just gone to weekly when I delivered.

How often did you have u/s’s?: first time, had a couple with my doc, then had them twice a week when getting treatment during preterm labor. Second time, every four weeks until 32 weeks, when it was too crowded to see much.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: Neither doc had a 'goal' for me. I think I gained 45 pounds and 30 pounds.

When did you find out the babies sexes? 32 weeks and 20 weeks

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: First time yes. Had contractions at 30 weeks that wouldn't stop, but I don't think were doing much.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: Stayed at a friend's house while my hubby and son split their weeks between me and going home. I watched a lot of tv (Lady Diana had just died in that car wreck--lots of news on that), read, spent time with Jim when he was there.

How far along were you when you delivered?: 34 weeks 6 days and 36 weeks 4 days

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: Both times my water broke.

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: vaginal for both, girls were all head down, my choice supported by my docs

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: nope

Did you breastfeed?: yep--13 months and currently at 3 months

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: fraternal (although some insist they have to be identical) and definitely fraternal

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Elizabeth Noble's twin book (can't think of the title), food, good pillows for sleeping, cute water bottle so you drink lots of water, doctor who will work with you and listen to you

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: bouncy seat(s), at least one swing in case it works, floor activity blanket/mat thingy, fleecy bunting type things for the car seats so you don't have to worry about them fitting in warm clothes, lotsa burp cloths, gowns for easy changes in the night, good nursing pillow, space for them to sleep near you, esp. if nursing, like a pack 'n play with a bassinet

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: the pre-made swaddling blankets--too big!, a swing was useless the first time around--they both hated it, pacifiers were useless the first time but not so useless this time, fussy clothes with buttons up the back

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: good to have two bouncy seats, having two compact swings has been nice this time; haven't needed more than one boppy or play mat

Pregnancy after multiples?: yep...got 'em again, too! Smile

Anything else you’d like to add?: lots of work, lots of joy, lots of stress, lots of love, lots of sleeplessness, lots of snuggles

I can't believe I never filled this out?!?!?!

Here it goes:

Name: Kelly

Kids: 2

Age when pregnant with your multiples: I turned 25 3 weeks after I found out.

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: Spontaneous.

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: yes

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 7 weeks exactly.

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: around 18 weeks or so. I can remember being all worried about it.

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: I had HORRIBLE m/s. Nothing really worked so I am glad it only lasted a few weeks.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: I did, but only the last month while I was on hospital bedrest. It was to double check Hailey's growth since she had fallen behind Emma and to check position all the time cause of Em's cord.

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: like normal people, every 4 weeks, then every 2 then...well, I saw him daily inthe hospital.

How often did you have u/s’s?: I had 1 every visit. At the begining it was to double check that I was clotting like I needed to and the rest for b/c he couldn't tell the difference intheir heart beats so it was just to be safe.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: he didn't really give me a number, but I gained 53 lbs. What's sad is that I only went 7.5 months. Could you imagine if I went term???

When did you find out the babies sexes? 15 weeks, 6 days. I couldn't wait so I went to a 3d place. lol

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: oh wow...at 7 weeks for a 20% placenta abruption, then at 25 weeks I went on modified bed rest for irritable uterus, then at 27 weeks complete bed rest for pre term labor and then at 29 weeks, hospital bed rest b/c they honestly didn't think they could stop labor.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: sit there on my big ol' butt! lol, really I made good use of Net Flicks, my brother brought over the complete set of Scrubs seasons 1-3, I surfed the internet alot, tried to read, but that just got me antsy.

How far along were you when you delivered?: 34 weeks 4 days.

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: They were preemies, born early due to Emma's placement. She was head down with her cord between her head and my cervix. I was dialated to 5 and 95% effaced that morning and with each contraction, her water bag buldged more and more. It put her at risk of strangelation. It was safer to deliver early than to risk loosing Emma.

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: C-section and I supposes it was Emma's choice, lol.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: E was 4 weeks, H was 5. I personally think they kept Emma in to see if the girls could go home together. She was doing just fine. Hailey was in longer for her desat issues. Those weren't brought on by her premature status, but rather by her heart issues.

Did you breastfeed?: yes, for 6 weeks.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: questionable. I wouldn't love them any more or less, so I'm not too worried about it at this moment.

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: definately 2 swings!!! I never used boppy pillows until recently cause they use them to lounge around and watch Disney or something. Oh and lots of rolly polly pants from Carters cause you can make twice as many outfits. Oh, and my favorite, the Snuzzler for their car seats. I've make ALL of my pregnant friends get one. It supports their WHOLE body and that is important when they are so little.

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: The snuzzler and a side by side stroller. I hated my tandem ones.

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: Baby Bjorn(but that's just me) high chairs, anything that is hard to take apart to have to clean. I like my booster seats way more.

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: Bouncy things, exersaucers, thing like that it's nice to have a few of. Not nessecerily all of the same thing, having like 1 bouncer and 1 saucer, and one play mat allows you to have different "stations" to rotate the kids in so that they don't get board. It's good stimulation for them.

Pregnancy after multiples?: Since then, we have had 1 miscarrage and have decided that our family is probably complete. It was too hard to loose another baby after seeing how much fun they are.

Anything else you’d like to add?:We had some issues with our girls inthe first year, ie: RSV, Rotavirus, heart surgery, cranial band, the list goes ON and ON. Parents of multiples, please don't worry about asking stupid questions or being pushy about what you want for your kids. ASK EVERYTHING, Push for what you know is best, and don't let medical personal bully you around. Also, being proactive is best. If we would have waited on Emma's head, we may not have had as good of results. So if you think there is a delay on something or you think something just isn't right, don't wait to see if things will go back to normal, find out more about the issue now rather than later.

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: yes; week 24; just "precautionary"...at my first meeting with MFM, my doc asked if I had a job where I could work from home; I said "yes" and he said "good -- -because starting at week 24 you're on bedrest". I think it was the best thing I ever did! I followed it strictly and know that's why I have two healthy babies now!

Anything else you’d like to add?: If your doctor tells you to go on bedrest, do it. Follow his orders! And don't nag him to take the babies early! Keep 'em cooking!!! (I just ran into someone the other day who's wife was only 33w preg with twins and he said the doctor told her he'd take them early - like within the next week or two - if she got too uncomfortable!)

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 24

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: Spontaneous

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: Yes

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 6 weeks

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: Flutters around 18 weeks

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: Yes! Saltines and ginger ale

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: No

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: Monthly until 26 weeks then bi-monthly till 30 weeks then weekly

How often did you have u/s’s?: Fairly often

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: 40 pounds; 45 pounds

When did you find out the babies sexes? 19 weeks

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: 26 weeks because it was required by my OB; I went on strict bedrest at 30 weeks because of contractions and hospital bed rest at 34 weeks

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: At first? More than I was supposed to. Once on strict bed rest, I read books, watched reruns on TV, did word searches, worked on my wedding scrap book and spent quality time with my now poor, neglected pooch

How far along were you when you delivered?: 35 1/2

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: I finally started with early labor and apparently (found this out later), I developed pregnancy induced hypertension

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: C-section, mine

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: No

Did you breastfeed?: Yes, but am currently weaning them off

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Identical

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Boppy pillows, sleep and plays, sleep sacks, and onesies

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: A vacuum cleaner. Trust me, it works when they're screaming their heads off for no reason (I need a merit badge for surviving the colic months)

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: Outfits. Newborn outfits are so impractical

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: I wish I had two Chicco travel systems. We really didn't buy a whole lot because we didn't have the money. A lot of stuff was given to us or bought for us. So we really didn't waste any money. Other people wasted money on us, though. Once again, newborn outfits are so impractical.

Pregnancy after multiples?: Never!!

Anything else you’d like to add?: Yes. People need to realize that just because they're twins, does not mean they must have identical clothes. I can't tell you how many of the same outfits/sleep & plays/etc that we got that were identical and it drives me nuts! I don't dress them the same. They are two different people, they need to be able to develop their own personalities. Not always be expected to be the same. I could go on into a whole rant about my irritating mother-in-law but I'll spare you all and get off my soapbox now!

Did you breastfeed?: I pump and give it to them in bottles

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Fraternal. We weren't sure until they were born, and DH's first words when Baby B came out was "Oh good, they aren't identical! I can tell them apart already!"

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: An extra set of hands!!!

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: LOVE having two bouncy seats! The girls love them!

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: Fancy dresses and lots of bows. They just aren't pratical in everyday life. They look really cute for pictures, but I would rather spend the money on clothes they can wear all the time.

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: Glad we had two bouncy seats, boppys. There is really nothing that we had two of that we didn't need. We only had one swing, and that was enough for us.

Pregnancy after multiples?: Ready for my boy twins! But gotta get DH on board for another one.

Anything else you’d like to add?: They are a lot of work, but what baby's aren't? I wouldn't trade a single sleepless moment for the world!!!

Figured it's time I filled this out!

Name: Leah

Kids: Isaac and Gabriel

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 24

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: totally spontaneous - they dont even run in my family

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: no

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 8wks

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: flutters at 16wks, kicks at 19-20wks

Did you have bad morning sickness? HORRIBLE
Any tips?: Eating little bits constantly, especially before you get up in the morning, something bland but with protein like almonds. Also, lemon. Seriously, suck a lemon. It helps.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why: Not really, my regular OB just handled all the high-risk stuff

How often did you see your Dr after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: Every month until 24 weeks, then twice a week or weekly

How often did you have u/s’s?: one at 8wks, one at 12wks, one at 17wks, one ay 20wks, then one at 24wks, then weekly or twice a week

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: 25-35 lbs, and I gained 30lbs

When did you find out the babies sexes? Isaac at 17wks and Gabe at 20wks

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: Yep, at 24 weeks, due to advanced cervical effacement (My cervix shrunk from 36mm down to 11mm in a matter of weeks). Was in the hospital for one week then sent home on strict bedrest.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: My boyfriend got me the entire series of Battlestar Galactica...and I kinda got a bit obsessed and watched it for like 8 hours a day. And of course, pg.org!

How far along were you when you delivered?: 30 weeks 3 days

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: Unstoppable preterm labor

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: Both. Not my choice! Isaac was head down and already really low, then after I delivered him, we found out Gabe had flipped to breech and his cord prolapsed so they had to do an emergency C section.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: Yep. Isaac spent 42 days (6wks) there and Gabe spent 61 days (almost 9wks) due to respiratory distress and other complications of prematurity

Did you breastfeed?: We're still trying, but I am currently pumping to at least provide my breastmilk for them.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Fraternal

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: Barbara Luke's book "what to expect twins triplets or quads" was a wonderful resource. The nutritional recommendations helped me pack some extra pounds onto my boys since I knew they would come early.

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: Two bouncy seats!! Seriously, we couldn't live without them. Also, tons of receiving blankets and cloth diapers for burp cloths.

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: They're not that into the swing, luckily, it was a gift.

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: We NEED two bouncers. We actually didnt buy much since these were our first babies. We dont have two of anything else really and it works for us. They are still little enough to be in one crib.

Pregnancy after multiples?: Absolutely! Just have to get dad on board now LOL.

Anything else you’d like to add?: Know the warning signs of preterm labor. Cramping (it doesnt have to hurt), backache, pressure, feeling like something "isn't right". Don't ignore them. I did, thinking they were nothing, and by the time I got to the hospital I was already 4cm dilated. Also, listen to your doctor/husband/partner/friends when they tell you to take it easy. Rest with your feet up when you can. Even if your pregnancy is going smoothly, your body is doing an amazing amount of work! It needs rest. If anyone has questions about being a preemie twin mom, feel free to PM me. It's a really tough ride.

Name: Sarah

Kids: Anna Maureen and Joseph Daniel

Age when pregnant with your multiples: 27

Fertility treatments or spontaneous?: Very spontaneous. A week before I got pregnant I was told I wasn't ovulating at all and should take a break for a year or so before considering treatments.

Were you multiples your 1st pregnancy?: Yes (after early mcs).

When did you find out you were carrying multiples?: 8 weeks, in the ER. I thought it was another mc and it turned out to be subchorionic bleeding with twin B.

When did you 1st feel movement with your multiples?: I felt tickles starting at 15-16 weeks and distinct prods and pokes a couple weeks later, and soon it became like those Alien movies where something was about to burst out of my stomach.

Did you have bad morning sickness? Any tips?: Nausea 24 hours a day for four months. I never actually threw up, though. Sucking on chunks of fresh ginger and drinking hot water with lemon juice helped a bit.

Did you see a specialist during your multiple pregnancy? If so when & why:
MFM once around 18 weeks, to check weird ultrasound results regarding twin B's brain (turned out OK).

How often did you see your Dr. after you found out you were carrying more than 1?: Once a month until 30 weeks, then weekly, plus twice-weekly home visits from a midwife starting at 32 weeks for BP, fetal HB and contraction monitoring.

How often did you have u/s’s?: A growth u/s monthly from 12 to 34 weeks, with 4D portraits thrown in, and a quick peek at every OB visit.

How much weight were you told to gain during your pregnancy? How much did you actually gain?: I got no indications. I lost 7-8 pounds at first. I only gained weight between 16-28 weeks. The day before delivering I was up 19 lbs, and the day after I was below my pre-pg weight.

When did you find out the babies sexes? 16 weeks.

Did you go on bed rest? If so when & why: Yes, house arrest starting around 24 weeks and complete bed rest at 30 weeks for pret. labor & shortened cervix, then a hospital stay 10 days later followed by even stricter rest at home. The couch now has a deep groove where I lay on my left side day after day.

What did you do while you were on bed rest?: I read lots of 19th-C novels, counted contractions, sewed and embroidered, tried to keep up with translating and research and got a permanent crick in my neck. Looking back on it, I'm nostalgic for the quiet time, the anticipation and the coziness of it all, though at the time I was mostly aware of being anxious and in pain.

How far along were you when you delivered?: 35 weeks 5 days

If your babies were preemie, why did you deliver early?: Many weeks of preterm labor that was slowed but not stopped by meds and bedrest. But they were barely preemie and I'm still amazed and grateful that we made it so far.

Vaginal or C-section? By your choice or the Dr’s?: Vaginal by mutual agreement. First twin unassisted, second needed instruments.

Did your babies spend time in the NICU? If so, why & how long was their stay?: Yes, 9 days. Joseph needed oxygen at first and had breathed in fluid so they gave him antibiotics (no infection after all), they were both a bit small and too sleepy to eat much and needed light treatment for jaundice, and Anna had tort and twisted hip/foot issues. But no major problems and they probably could have come home sooner.

Did you breastfeed?: Yes, and I pump a couple of bottles every day so my husband can handle one feeding at night and let me sleep for a few hours.

Fraternal, identical or questionable?: Boy + girl = frat.

What items do you recommend for a mommy-to-be of multiples?: A solution for those days when you can't get enough real food down. I found a plain whey protein powder (not one of those weight-loss protein drink mixes full of added chemicals) that I mixed with different combos of fruit etc. in the blender. Good for breastfeeding twins, too.

What are some things you consider Must Have items for new mommies of multiples?: The double electric breast pump, which I wasn't planning to use until going back to work in a few months, saved us when they were in the NICU. I couldn't have kept up with feeding them otherwise. A sling, pouch or scarf to carry/nurse somebody so your hands are free for the other(s), and also safe places to set a baby down in a hurry when something comes up, like a donut/nursing pillow or even a changing pad you can whip out and set on the floor.

What are some items you found completely useless with your multiples?: I now realize---with my very few weeks of experience, of course---that the most important part of preparing for twins and for parenthood in gen. is not so much buying baby stuff but rather organizing your home and your life so you can function with as little fuss and wasted energy as possible. When we found out it was twins, we got a microwave, washing machine and dryer and built lots of storage space. Before that we'd survived with a hotplate, a dorm fridge and a laundromat.

What items were you glad you had multiples of & what items do you feel you wasted money on by buying more than 1?: Just need 2 carseats so far.

Pregnancy after multiples?: We hope so! Husband and I agree it'll be a bit of an anticlimax if it's "only" one baby next time around.

Anything else you’d like to add?: I second what Leah wrote above about being aware of preterm labor signs and indulging in precautionary, preventative resting. I'd read a dozen books describing the symptoms and still didn't make the connection, but late twin pg is already such an uncomfy period that it's easy to ignore new discomforts.
