The babies had another doctors appt. to A) address Bradleys congestion which, with the antibiotics, has cleared up and B) address Kaylees irregular BM. so Brad weighs 10lbs and 8oz and is up 1lb and 3 oz and Kaylee is 8lbs 6oz and is up 1lb and 1oz. The problem I have is with kaylee. She is going 4-5 days without a BM. She will finally have one and continue to have BM for about 2-3 days and then go another 4-5 day stretch of nothing. My doctor has no concern with this simply because when she does have a BM it is soft and she isn't in pain. She had her first since Sat today and I have to admit it was very easy for her to get out and it was normal looking. Anyway, I think its odd that she goes that many days without a BM. My doctor says it is simply that she is putting herself on a schedule. DD1 only had BM everyother day which I've heard from many ppl is normal...but 4-5 days.
Does that seem odd to anyone else?
Nope. S would do that as an infant. From what I read, it can be normal for small babies to go up to 10 days without a BM. I cannot remember if you bf or ff, but ff babies tend to be a little less regular. I think that is because most formulas are iron fortified. Iron tends to stop things up a little.
By the way, S is much more regular now, but she can still go a day or two without a BM sometimes. I plan to try probiotics for her soon. She eats yogurt everyday, but additional probiotics cannot hurt.
I posted this on my Sept. board and they said the same thing. I never would have thought that 10 was ok with a BM. I guess because she is not in pain then everything is ok. But it makes her gas smell extra smelly. Never thought something so gross could come out of something so cute!
Yup, normal. I remember when my oldest had gone like 5 days w/o one, and I called the peds and they said they can go 10 days, and that sometimes bf babies go less frequently because their body uses everything from the bm, so there is less waste (but Mel's explanation of more iron in formula makes more sense to me lol). But my dd has always struggled with constipation, once she stopped bf, so I wonder if there was a connection, even then. At 9, she has to have high fiber bread, and eat fiber bars and such regularly, and we still have issues.
