2 For CC Please?

So I'm finally getting the nerve to post some for CC. It's been since November, but I feel like I've improved.

I LOVE this 50mm lens and my speedlight has been invaluable!! I just find it hard to get much more than close ups because DD moves WAYY to much to get any nice full body shots. I can't get her to sit still for anything.

These are from this morning. Natrual light from large window, camera right.

How's the crop on this? I don't have much to work with. Is there any way to fix the blown bottom right?

Again, crop? There isn't much of her lower torso to work with, too much upper empty space.

great eye focus
Crop on the first is too centered, try to get her eyes following the rule of thirds.
The second the crop looks good, the wires in the back are a bit distracting, maybe you can clone them out?

Did you take in RAW? You can tone the blown bits down a bit there but not much, you'll need to have to layers and fix the face different than the shirt and mask down to overlay, the face can be lightened a bit

I'm impressed with how much you have improved! (I lurk more than I post, but I do pay attention!) Nice focus on the eyes. I agree twith LJ about the crops and about shooting RAW so that you have more control over everything for editting.

With #1, would a landscape crop be bad? That's the only way I can really follow the rule of thirds. I just didn't get a great comp on this shot SOOC.

I'll have to figure out if I can clone. I just downloaded GIMP. I'm not familiar with it at all. I'll have to read up on it's capabilities.

I don't/didn't shoot in RAW. I honestly don't understand it enough. I have switched over now. I'll have to do some reading and research on that.

Thanks girls Smile

Look at the great eye focus you got! Well done! I agree with the ideas for cropping. Give those a try. She's a doll!

The blown spot doesn't really bother me in the 1st one due to the narrow DOF. I'd like to see this in a landscape crop like suggested, but despite being centered, I like it pretty well as-is. The focus is on those amazing eyes and a centered composition works pretty well, imho. Smile

I'd like to see a slightly tighter crop in #2. The candle in the background is *slightly* distracting, but not major. You got a great expression here and your focus looks really nice.

I think you'll love RAW once you get the hang of it. I've never looked back. Until you are comfy w/ it, you could try shooting in RAW + jpg. Takes up a lot more space on your card, but it might be worth it for you. I don't bother any more. I love RAW. Smile

what a cutie! I love the eye focus! I think a landscape crop on the first would actually work. I'm with LJ, eyes too centered for me on the first one. and I agree with GiGi on the tighter crop on the second - too much white space for me (with her torso, not really white space, but nothing of interest) when you have such a cute expression you can get closer to with another crop.

and I did the RAW + jpg when I first made the switch. Now I shoot straight RAW. It's so much better!!!

what do you use for editing? I remember you didn't get PSE for Christmas ... can you save for it? You can usually get a deal at Costco. totally worth it.

I don't have much to work with on #1. I tried to do a landscape, but there just isn't enough picture to the left to make the eyes in the right third  Guess I didn't do a great camera crop.

#2 I will work on getting a tighter crop. Is it OK to cut off some of her hair and head?

Below are the SOOC images to show what I have to work with.

Gwen - I'm using a mix of PhotoScape and GIMP. I like going through all the pics in PhotoScape and doing crops there, but I see how GIMP can get more color detail than PhotoScape. I just need to learn more for PP.

I'll have to pinch my pennies to get PSE. There was a great deal on Amazon for version 8.

Oh, and I just shot a few pics tonight in JPEG and RAW. It takes FOREVER for them to download, and I only had 33 pics. I couldn't imagine taking over a hundred (common for me) and downloading them all at once. It'd take all night!!

what about a crop like this for the second?

rylee crop

it's private in flickr, I can take it down if you want.

GIMP is a good program and there are a lot of tutorials out there. also check your library to see if they have any books for digital photographers.
