9 day old newborn - i'm so proud of these!

I took these for one of my playgroup friends today. I did her maternity session about 6 weeks ago. Everytime I do a session like this I feel like I'm twice as good as the last time and I'm so freaking proud of myself right now. I have spent so much time learning and practicing and asking for CC (here and on ILP)... I owe these two boards everything.

Please give me CC on everything. I'm still learning new things every day so please point them out to me! Let me know if they're too big and I can post smaller ones. They're 810px wide - sized for my blog. Settings ~ISO400, f 2-3.2, 1/100-1/320 I think.

All shot using natural window light and my 50mm 1.4 (except the first is with my 105mm 2.8 macro).

I LOVE the hats. Etsy is down right now so I can't post a link but her shop is called the Funky Hooker. Handmade in Australia. I fell in love when I saw them and had to have them.

I think you did an outstanding job! I love the poses!!! and the teddy bear one is adorable!!!!!!!! as for critique.. on the storyboard, I love the two outside pics, but the one in the middle seems cut off to abrubtly and the metal basket doesnt go with a newborn shoot (JMO) It just doesnt look soft and natural as your other pics! I love every thing else about that pic tho! and the smiling one is to die for! MOM is going to LOVE these! Im going to have to check out this funky hooker chick!!

thanks everyone. Here's the link to the hat store: http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6083468

if you get any hats from her, be sure to tell her you found them from Krissy Allori Photography... I'm trying to work out a discount for more hats!

These are great Krissy! I really love all of them except the metal basket one. But that is just my opinion. I also agree with the cc Mandie gave about the middle storyboard pic.

Have you offered pictures in trade? I'm thinking of trying to find someone to work this deal out with.

ETA: I'm gonna work on some really picky CC when I get to the real computer...on the laptop right now.

Yeah, she gave me about a 20% discount on these with a promise of watermarked pics in return. She said she had been burned in the past by other photographers wanting a discount and offering pictures in return and she never got them, so I didn't want to disappoint. Her prices are already really good. I can't wait to see what she comes out with for the holidays.

What is your set up on these? Do you use your speedlight or is it all natural light? I am just curious. I am going to take newborn pictures in November so I am trying to get some research done before then. I have gobs of time though!

it was all natural window light. I find it best to be in a room with windows mostly on one wall and place the baby at a 45degree angle. i took a couple pull back shots because we were working in a really tight space but since I didn't have a wide angle lens, the pullbacks don't help explain much. I can describe more next time we get together if you want. Not counting my own, she was the 5th newborn I've done, third since joining ILP, and its taken a lot of practice to get it right!

Here's my CC. You already know that these are great, so these are really picky comments.

#1 - I don't know how I feel about this collage. The feet are quite a bit more magenta than the hands and it makes the whole thing a touch unbalanced. I'm not sure about the face being included. The nose is OOF (focus fell on the brow and/or cheek) and it might work better for me if the eye were the focus and the whole eye were in the image the top RH third.

#2. The lighting is a bit off for me. The shadows on the left hand side of the photo are atouch too dark and the light on the right hand side is a touch too bright. The nose shadows are just a little too harsy. I think it would have worked better if the baby were turned about 10 degrees to the right. (PICKY!!!!)

#3. You can see the difference in the lighting in this one. The baby's face is turned just a little more towards the light and the difference in the shadows is wonderful. LOVE this one, color, comp, light...everything.

#4. I really don't like this bowl. It seems so cold and hard and doesn't work for me. Technically everything looks really good.

#5. Wonderful. I love how the green blanket is echoed in the hat. Sweet capture. Nice composition, though it would be a tiny bit better if the baby's eyes were higher in the frame.

#6. I'm not feeling this one. That same lighting issue from #2...but more exaggerated. It might work better for me in BW.

These are fantastic! I have to agree about the basket. I do think it looks good, but it still seems out of place to me. Great job!!! You just keep getting better!!!

Really nice job on these..

I love the one with the teddybear it is perfect.

#3 I'm not digging the blanket you used in this photo , personally i prefer to use blankets that are soft and fluffy, this one sort of reminds me of a table cloth? That could just be personel taste though!

#4 I'm really not digging the metal bowl thing, its hard to tell what it is, and it also looks like its floating in the air...

#5 PERFECT, i love everything about it

dude, I don't know how I missed this thread earlier!

you've already read some of the things I was going to say, namely about the first storyboard and the metal basket (that is a funky neat basket, just not something I'd expect to find a newborn in). but I love her sprawl in that one, just adorable.

love the hats too, will have to check her out. Wink

I'm loving the teddy bear one, just way too cute!

and I do love the 3rd one, just wish the hat's tail was shorter, I want to be closer to baby's face.

the sweet baby smile in 5 is too much ... in a good way, just love it!

and I really love the last one. there's just something about it, I really love it.

so, how super posable was this baby? she looks like a dream to work with because there's no discontent on her face at all! she's so peaceful in each one.

Well, I wasn't sure we were going to get too many shots because I had my two kids at their house but luckily there were other people there to watch them for me. The baby wasn't sleeping at all at first and whenever she did fall asleep, we'd get a few shots and then she'd wake up. I went downstairs to have lunch with my kids and gave the mommy some alone time with the baby. It wasn't long before she was calling me saying that the baby was asleep and man, she was putty in my hands. Normally I like posing the babies because I know what I want, but her mommy did an outstanding job so I let her do it. I told her I want to bring her along for my next newborn shoot. Smile

I think what really helped get the baby to sleep was me leaving the room for a bit. It helped mom and baby relax and take as much time as they needed and giving my kids lunch made me chill out because I knew they were happy and I didn't have to worry about them being crabby when I went back upstairs. Obviously, if my friend was a paying client, I wouldn't bring the kiddos along with me. Smile

that's awesome that the mom was such a huge factor here. I mean, it should be that way, mom helping instead of getting in the way. Wink

:udawoman: Wow Woman, you should definately be proud. I loved them. I hate to be picky,(mostly since I'm not usre I can produce anything of this standard yet;)) but wanted to take a shot at cc...so be super swet and cc mine when I get a chance to do some newborns too. I've only done 1 and then practiced on another. Wink

okay, her goes nothin...
1. I love the concept and love the creamy colors of the set up, but agree with Amber that the skin tones should match a little more, but that being said, the bottoms of our feet ARE quite different in shade then the rest of our bodies. Favorite of the 3 is the hand.

2. love it. Smile

3. Sweet face and I personally like the fact thatthe texture of the blanket doesn't compete with the hat.

4. Don't like the bowl. At all. Unless fruit was in it. In that case, I'd love it cause it's a neat shape! :lol:But the skin of the baby looks PERFECT! So creamy and smooth. Lovely.

5.So, so sweet.

6. I think the lighting is dramatic. I'd really like to see a conversion on this one. Smile
