Default Again with the 'blown' issue

I'm just curious. Do you guys EVER think blown whites are OK? I ask because sometimes I see images taken against windows that seem to me are likely blown, and I like them. And sometimes I take images like that myself... and I like them. Is it just absolutely taboo? Because it seems to me in looking at images I like sometimes that it is NOT really taboo... but then if you google it, all the discussion makes it sound like it is.

The image I took today that got me wondering again is this one:

I happen to like that the window is totally blown and highlights the curve of her cheek and everything. But I'm sure it's just 'wrong'. Sigh.

I view an image like that as ok. The same goes for the blacks. If it's the look you're going for, then there's nothing wrong with it IMO If you're blowing the whites on accident, then I view it as wrong. If you're doing it on purpose (such as this image), it's fine. Ugh…baby's awake. Cutting it short

Exactly what Steph said. I find it perfectly ok on an image like this.

Remember ... all rules are made to be broken. It works here, bottom line. And there are a lot of places where it DOES work.

Intention is a big part of it - there are many who blow their whites (or blacks or reds ....) just b/c they weren't paying attention. There are times when it is unavoidable and you do the best you can with the conditions you have and then there are times you do it on purpose to set off something else.

Whether you do it for artistic expression or to make the best out of the conditions in which you are working, as long as the INTENTION is there, then I think you are OK in my book.

Thanks so much, guys! That sets my mind at ease. I do it intentionally, because I like it... and then second-guess myself about it!

I know what you mean, I've done the same thing before and questioned it. Photography is art, so it is very open to different styles and techniques, you can break the rules sometimes.

The light on your photo works well, I don't think breaking the "rules" isn't a problem here.
