Botanical Gardens - JMK (pic heavy)

I have a maternity session at botanical gardens and I hadn't been there yet. So I took the family on Friday to check it out. It's GORGEOUS there! I can't wait for my session on Saturday.

Still haven't gotten the "canvas worthy" shot of my four kids together. But I came close!

Humor me while I share some of my favorites with you. My eyes are really tired, I've been processing these over the last couple of days, and I'm hoping they're consistant.

1. the sky was so beautiful that evening. so I started out with sunbursts (need to get it right because I want to do it for the maternity session over the belly)

Exposure: 0.003 sec (1/400)
Aperture: f/22.0
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 100

2. Backlighting ... and I used my reflector too. I opted to keep the haze in the photo, as I could have gotten it out. Does it work? The finger chop bugs me but it is what it is. Sad

Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 40 mm
ISO Speed: 100

3. My handsome boy (who rarely lets me photograph him)

Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 42 mm
ISO Speed: 100

4. Not sure which I like better, more scenery or closer crop. What do you think?

Exposure: 0.008 sec (1/125)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 53 mm
ISO Speed: 100

5. I really wanted this one to work. My DH was already done (we hadn't been there that long but he has a low tolerance for photography and the kids combined). Anyhow, if my DH had helped me with the kids, we could have gotten such a cute shot. I think the bugs were really irritating my poor husband here though.

Exposure: 0.01 sec (1/100)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 33 mm
ISO Speed: 100

6. Used an Orton effect here and masked the family out at about 50%. Does it work?

Exposure: 0.013 sec (1/80)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 38 mm
ISO Speed: 100

7. Bribery at its finest ... tic tacs for sitting still

But it worked for a little bit

Exposure: 0.006 sec (1/160)
Aperture: f/4.0
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 500

if you look in my siggy, you'll see the girls' hands reaching for more tic tacs. Funny!

8. Heading out of the gardens

Exposure: 0.004 sec (1/250)
Aperture: f/3.2
Focal Length: 75 mm
ISO Speed: 640

9. Bonus share ... Rita from Coffeeandtea has the coolest "teeny tiny" action to emulate tilt shift. I thought I'd play with this picture - it's the words "skate park" that my son made out of Duplos. The action is supposed to make the main part of the photo look like it's a miniature scale replication. I realize that using it on a photo of legos almost defeats the purpose, but that's okay. I just wanted to play.

Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 28 mm
ISO Speed: 400

Hi Gwen,

Great pictures!

4. I like the first one better. For some reason, the branch that is oof near her left ear is distracting. Who knows, I'm easily distracted by all sorts of strange things. My imagination goes into overdrive and I get stuck trying to figure out what it looks like.

6. I don't know what the Orton effect is but this is a really neat picture. I simply LOVE it!

8. Jack is such a cutie!

Wow, Gwen! These are AWESOME! I don't know how you didn't drop everything (eating, sleeping, cooking, etc) to edit the set from morning to night. Smile

here's my $0.02 worth:

1. I *LOVE* your sunbursts! I have been meaning to try this, but being out in the TX heat makes me want to run for shade ... and A/C. Wink

2. I like the haze. Gives it that soft feel. Finger chop is unfortunate, but I like this one anyway. There's some kind of artifact on Jordan's right hand though that doesn't look right. Not sure what that is. I like the light the reflector brought into her eyes.

3.LOVE this one of Andrew! Wish you could bribe him for more pictures, he does it well. GREAT light in his eyes. What is that in the bottom right of the photo? Is that natural? Almost looks like you added some kind of flourish in post, but I'm not convinced that's what it is. I'd have this on the wall for sure.

4. I like the wider crop better. She looks a little soft in the close crop (around the eyes and mouth especially). I *love* the wider crop though. The lines give it such a nice flowing feel. And the sun on her face and shoulders is really soft and pleasing. LOVE IT!

5. Sorry this one didn't work out. You're right ... w/ the lines of the bridge and their stair steps in height. would have been really cool. jack sure looks cute though (& so does Nat)!

6. I think the orton effect works really well here. love the motion blur in Andrew's feet. boys ... they're always on the move!

7. LOL! it's great when bribes work! i love how Andrew has his arms around Jack and Nat ... it just looks so ... 'big brotherly' Smile And isn't Jordan just too sweet waiting & watching there?!

7b. GREAT SHOT! all 4 looking at you and everything! If not canvas-worthy, still very much print worthy! I *adore* all the light you got in those amazing brown eyes!

8. WAY CUTE! I'd love to see the Orton effect on this one too. Would have been really cool to have someone call his name and have him looking back over his shoulder at you as you snapped this one. Still love it lots!

9. cool action! I'd love to see it done w/ a full scale photo. Smile

Thanks, as always, for sharing, Gwen! These are GREAT and as the mom & photo here, you must be doubly proud!

Best,
GiGi

thanks Heidi!

and GiGi, I always love your CC, you make me feel so good about my work. here are the answers to some of your questions/comments:

2. I like the haze. Gives it that soft feel. Finger chop is unfortunate, but I like this one anyway. There's some kind of artifact on Jordan's right hand though that doesn't look right. Not sure what that is. I like the light the reflector brought into her eyes.

it's just reflected light from either dust near the front of the camera or something. I have a few photos with similar spots when I'm in the sun like that.

I love this one too. Smile the thing in the corner is from the gardens, it's just decorative metal "stuff". I can't think of what it's called. but it's in the gardens. I almost cropped it out but I really like it so I kept it.

4. I like the wider crop better. She looks a little soft in the close crop (around the eyes and mouth especially). I *love* the wider crop though. The lines give it such a nice flowing feel. And the sun on her face and shoulders is really soft and pleasing. LOVE IT!

she IS soft in the closer crop ... being so far away from her, she wasn't as crisp as I would have liked. I tried to sharpen her eyes some to make her not so soft though.

7. LOL! it's great when bribes work! i love how Andrew has his arms around Jack and Nat ... it just looks so ... 'big brotherly' And isn't Jordan just too sweet waiting & watching there?!

7b. GREAT SHOT! all 4 looking at you and everything! If not canvas-worthy, still very much print worthy! I *adore* all the light you got in those amazing brown eyes!

thanks! I think I have a couple more of these in my Flickr stream. I took a bunch of them like this (probably a dozen), couldn't help myself. I do want to get one printed. I wish the girls weren't reaching their hands up in my favorite shots of the four of them.

8. WAY CUTE! I'd love to see the Orton effect on this one too. Would have been really cool to have someone call his name and have him looking back over his shoulder at you as you snapped this one. Still love it lots!

oh, I'll have to give that a try! didn't think Orton on that.

9. cool action! I'd love to see it done w/ a full scale photo.

me too, actually! just need to find the right photo for it. have you seen this? http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2009/10/a-model-day-at-the-park/

I want to be like you!! I find excuses to not get out and take pictures. My main one is it's dang HOT!! Everyone is too sweaty to keep going Sad

You did awesome with this, though. It looks like an awesome location too.

1. I love your sky shots, so pretty
2. I think the haze is nice with the back lighting. Finger chop is Sad
3. Such a handsome boy. And I had to try to figure out what those swirls were in the bottom right hand corner. Just saw your answer to GiGi Smile
4. I like the closer crop. With the bridge railing and bokeh of the large leaves in the background, it just seems to busy to me.
5. Wish your DH could have held out for just a BIT longer. Cute shot though
6. I like the effect here.
7. Love the bribery!! But if it works!!
8. Jack is such a cutie
9. Neat picture. I'm interested to see what else this can be used for.
