breaking the rules

I have really been struggling with photography lately. I've felt stale in my images, in my process. And I just haven't felt like I'm growing any. In fact, in many ways, I feel like I've been moving backward. I haven't even printed much b/c I just don't feel like the shots have been worth the effort.

Then I fell off the bandwagon with the P52 and though I'm trying to get back into that, when the topic comes up, I just haven't felt inspired. KWIM?

So this morning when trolling some photo sites, looking at a shot that was very obviously centered, but that I just LOVED, I decided to check out the comments. And someone wrote "rules are made to be broken."

We've all heard that before, right?

So I have decided to spend a week or two or more or whatever it takes ... to break the major rules of composition _intentionally_ and see if that might help me loosen up a bit and get back into the swing of things.

SO ... back to why I'm posting .... anyone want to join me in a little rule breaking?

Today/this week, I think I'm going to try my hand at some centered shots. I'm going to break the rule of thirds. I plan to post my images here.

If anyone else feels like playing, go ahead and post your shots here! Biggrin

Best,
GiGi

Sorry you've felt so slumped. It's funny, I just took a macro photo last week where the composition was not ideal but I loved every detail of the background and foreground the way it was, so I decided not to crop it at all. I know it probably doesn't make the photo "work" any better like some intentional rule-breaking does (and should), but you reminded me of that pic anyway.

I have seen plenty of centered or otherwise "non-thirded" pics that were wonderful. My recent ones are insects, so I won't post them since they aren't the ideal example of what would be the biggest impact/best result with centering.

Here are a few I took yesterday as part of my "break the rule of thirds" exercise:

As you can see, these are all purposely centered. I may stick with breaking this particular rule the rest of the week. I had fun getting these and I may try for a few more. I'm kind of playing it by ear right now.

Anyone else?

I think you have to make it work for you! If you are in a slump, do what YOU want to do. Don't follow the rules, just like you are saying! Love your new photos. They are what you need!

Great idea, GiGi! I love the soccer ball between the feet - awesome shot, and perfect for rule-breaking.

Here's one from me. His eyes are almost dead center, but to me it works.
Happy!

Saw this post and had to post Smile That's all I do, break the rules Smile Since I take photos for ME, I do what I like. Of course, I try not to overexpose and whatnot, but if I like a photo and know it's not 'technically correct,' it doesn't bother me. Same with my editing, I do what I think looks nice.

I think the problem is that people forget that there are WAY more composition rules than the rule of thirds. Each of the posted images follow these rules which is why they work composition ally. Things such as symmetry and natural framing.

True, Amber!

Here's another one from me. Dead center, but I prefer it that way. Probably the symmetry.

WOWSERS! AWESOME!

I hope to have a few new ones this week.

Tough I'm breaking all kinds of rules now and not just the rule of thirds. Smile

TFS, Tracy!
