BW conversion and CC

No award winners here, but at least we had fun. Smile

How did I do on the conversion? It seems off to me, but I'm not sure why.

P8225426-3

With this one I'm just wondering how I did with the flash. I took it in Shutter priority with a 1/16 flash.
f/4.6 ISO-200 Exposure 1/160 sec
P8225445

And then just for comparison, this one was taken on auto without a flash.
f/4.1 ISO- 800 Exposure 1/20 sec

I've been WAY MIA lately, so my CC might be a little rusty! Wink

1.
I am noticing alot of grain in the first picture, so I think when you converted it, it sort of showcased it. So I'd say your ISO was pretty high and needs to be lower next time.

2.
Not a fan of flash. I think you would have done better to open up the aperture (not sure what kind of lens you have) and turn off the flash, and make sure the shutter speed is at least 1/150. That being said, your baby is so adorable! Who wouldn't like to look at this pic?

3.
The problem with auto is that it decides what the compromises will be. In this case, the compromise was the low shutter speed, which made your photo blurry. If you would have put it on Manual, opened up your aperture as much as possible, and even upped the ISO to 1600, your picture would be more crisp. You'd have more grain and a more shallow depth of field, but for this picture I think it would have been a better compromise. I hope that makes sense! Also, try playing with your white balance settings. It can make a HUGE difference!

Cute kids and great job practicing!

I think the problem is with it being so yellow.

What program did you use to do the conversion. to me it looks like you used a blue filter which is why the babies are so dark.

I had a bit of a play. its private on flickr so noone has access to it. I'll take it down if you want.

I first took out the yellow as much as I could with such a small photo. then I played around with the levels a little til I got it almost right. THEN I did the conversion. upped the whites as much as I could and then played with the blacks and neutrals and tweaked the contrast. Ran it through a very basic noise reduction process and that is the finished image.

Before. Colour. Black & White!

Caz that's excellent! You made my picture look great. Smile you dont have to take it down... I just wish i could make mine look that good so id have it. I used Gimp. But I'm still learning my way around it. I attempted to get rid of the yellow/orange but I guess I wasn't too successful. :/ I looked up how to do conversions in gimp and found three ways. I can't remember what they are right now without looking at the program and I'm on the iPad not my laptop. But none of them seemed as involved as what you did. And by that i mean being able to play with just whites or blacks... I guess it's back to searching more.

And I tried to up my ISO before using the flash, but it didn't work. I'll have to upload one of those to show and see what I did wrong.
