I finally got a chance to do a cake smash with the girls. We all have been pretty sick here. WOW, what a lot of work! First the baking of cakes, then decorating, then trying to figure out where was best to do it. I decided I wanted to do it outside and use the natural light. I was going to do it this afternoon, but it threated to storm all day, so I was forced to do it this morning right after DH mowed the law. Wet cut grass does NOT go well with a white sheet! And in hind-sight, laying a sheet on grass leaves lots of wrinkle marks! Oh, and then trying to clean up after it was a load of fun! Two filthy girls who decided to crawl in the grass, a 3ft x 6ft dirty piece of plexiglass, a grass stained and cake stained sheet, and a white dog who now has green feet!!!! Oh but it was fun!
Anyway, here are some pics. The only thing I have done is brightened them a little and sharpened. I still need to crop and fix some of the sheet where it meets the plexiglass. The wind kept blowing it.
All were shot in manual at 1/200, f/10, ISO-200, no flash
Feel free to play with them if you would like!
First, did you shoot in RAW? (fingers crossed that you did). Your WB is definitely off. The sheets look pink to me instead of white. Which to me means that there's too much magenta here. I'm wondering why you shot with such a closed aperture? I would have done these at 4-4.5 and let in more light (and lowered the ISO to 100 and upped the SS some since more light would come in). You definitely have your work cut out for you in PP as you have the plexiglass line to fix plus the wrinkles to try to diminish.
I LOVE Addison's face in the last one, do you have any close ups with that expression?
BTW, two cake smashes at the same time is BRAVE! Did you have any help? I can only imagine what a mess they were when you were all done. Those cakes are very cute.
Thanks! Yes, I did shoot in RAW!!! I know you can do SO much more PP if they are in RAW, now only if I knew how to do it!
I agree, the sheet does not look white. As far as the settings I chose, well, I don't really know much yet so I went off the light meter on my camera and chose a fast shutter speed and then just sort of played with the settings until it came up in the middle! I know, not the best way to do things, but I'm still new and trying to figure all of these settings out. LOL!
I do have some closeups of Addison's face like that last one. She just kept do it over and over again! DH was here to give me hand and keep SOME of the mess to a minimum.
Thanks for the CC. I may try to set up the sheet and plexiglass next weekend and take some pics of the girls just for practice to try to figure all of this out.
Definitely play with ACR to get the WB right ... fix it there so you don't have to deal with it in Photoshop. You can open multiple files at once, and make the WB numbers the same on all of them, if the lighting was the same for each photo.
ditto what Gwen said! I would have shot at around 4 or 4.5 just so that there is more blur to the background so you won't have to worry so much about wrinkles and such. i think you did great though. Those cakes are so cute! and I had to LOL at the dog comment. You are brave to have done this! I wish I would have done such a thing when my little boy turned 1. I didn't feel confident enough though. I love the last one. and yes ACR is great!!! I'll play with the last one.
and here's the last picture. I fixed the white balance in ACR (used the white balance dropper and click on the sheet and that pretty much fixed it) then took it into PS and used the spot healing brush to get rid of the dark spot between the plexiglass and sheet in the background. kinda blend everything together. Oh yes I also used a selective color layer, played with the whites only and then added a layer mask to bring back your girls. I hope that makes sense. I don't know how to speak layers. lol I just use them.
WOW, great job!!! Thanks! Definetly going to have to try to use the plexiglass again this weekend and get out the manual and try to figure out the software I have. You ladies are inspiring me to try to get at least a little understand of this whole thing!
I was cracking up at your story!!! Your girls are so cute. I love the flowers and diapers/dipe covers. The cakes are so cute too!

I've gotta run (I've spent too much time on here while at work already), but I wanted to say you're off to a GREAT start here!!! Once you get the wb right in ACR, you are going to LOVE these (*I* do)! And man, those girls are just BEYOND cute
