Calibrating my monitor

Ok, so I know this is probably a stupid question, but what is the best way to calibrate my monitor. I finally got a new LED monitor (my old dell one was ridiculous). But I want to make sure I'm seeing things correctly as I'm editing. I've tried to do some research online but idk it all seems either scammy or over my head. Do I really need to buy the expensive software to get the job done? TIA

Yes you do, but the "expensive software" isn't really that expensive. You can get lots of decent calibration devices used off e-bay. Even something that is 2 or 3 generations old is so much better than trying to calibrate yourself without the help of some calibration software/hardware.
