Calling all Lurkers!

Are there any lurkers out there who are just starting to get to know their cameras that would like a little help along the way? The ladies here at the pg.org Photography board helped me so much while I was starting out, and I want to pay it forward. I was thinking that I could do a little mentorship on the basics of photography.

Is there any interest?? If so, give a little intro, and maybe post a couple of photos to show where you are in your journey.

Somebody should take Steph up on this! Don't be nervous.

I waited TOO LONG to involved (possibly almost 4 years...just sayin') - I've learned a ton just since I started actively participating and regret I didn't do it sooner. I have thousands of photos that could have been much better...even just snapshots of my kids doing every day things!

I've totally been lurking this board Smile
I keep trying to remember to post some photos and get some CC, but I always forget......or I remember just as I'm shutting my computer down for the night!
I've taken a couple of into courses to get to know my camera, but they're so spread out, and I have so little time to practice, that I seem to forget everything! As soon as I leave whatever class I was in, I've already forgotten about F-stops and shutter speeds!

Well, Jo, are you up for some mentoring? I don't claim to know everything, but I can most certainly help you out with the basics to get you going. It's one of those things where we'll add one thing at a time. I'm a firm believer on taking things one step at a time in photography. Starting with exposure, then move on to watching backgrounds or chopping arms or legs, and just progressively working on things that are more difficult.

I also do want to mention that I'm definitely more of a portrait photographer. I try so hard with landscapes/nature, but for some reason I just don't have the eye. I see that you're due with your first child. Do you have anyone to practice on? Is your hubby willing? Nieces or nephews?

Steph, i've just started lurking here again. You caught me! I'd give anything if you could teach a photoshop class. Smile Masking, black and white conversions, etc. I'm in awe of your B&Ws! Just gorgeous!

How about a newbie group? I'll take up to 5 lurkers who are new to photography. So we have Marie, Elizabeth, and Jo. I'll take 2 more in the group. You can each have your own day to post up to 3 photos for CC. I'll CC them, and maybe the others can CC them as well?

I am not new, nor do I lurk, I know the basics but would love to see your hints and tips to others, see if I am doing things right. Don't reserve me a spot, I am sure there are others with less experience that could use your help.

I love it Stephanie! Sometimes, I think I don't post my photos b/c I *know* they are novice, ya know? Thanks so much for doing this! I can't wait!

Oh, it's no problem at all! I know just how hard it can be to get the nerve up to actually start posting, so I thought that this could help some people come out of the shadows. I hope a couple more will step out.

I'll be stalking this group, but can't commit to posting at the moment. Smile You are so generous for offering this Steph!

Yay Jill!

I'm looking forward to getting this started. Perhaps I'll start a new thread and have you guys post intros? I haven't heard back from Jo yet, but if she's in, there's one more spot left.

Intros sound like a great idea. I did have a couple of questions before we start. I am new new to posting pics. I have used photobucket in the past and it seems to be kind of a tedious process. Is that what y'all still use to post photos on here or is there a better site to use?

I forgot my Photobucket password, or even what e-mail I used to set it up, so I am using Flicker now.

I, personally, use Flickr for uploading. I like their service. It's free, but you do have a limit on how much you can upload per month, and you can 'only' view the latest 200 photos uploaded (which is quite a bit IMO). I upgraded to a pro account, though, with all the uploading that I've been doing lately.

Woohoo, so nice to see some new people here! It will be awesome to see everyone's photos. I have a long way to go yet, but have come along a lot since joining this board 1.5 years ago... it's a really great group, and you don't get the benefit if you don't post! Smile

Oh I wish I had seen this sooner! I do lurk in and out (occasionally post) from time to time, but I haven't been around a lot lately.

Tracy, this is so true! I've been 'lurking' on this board for a long time but am usually intimidated to post. I could have gained so much if only I'd stop being a scardy cat. :/ And BTW, your landscapes have ALWAYS amazed me! When I first came here I remember looking at your portfolio and thinking, 'dang! She is a pro!' Your eye for scenery is spot on, no matter what camera you use.

I haven't heard anything back from Jo yet, and if I don't by Tuesday, you're in!

I'm so bummed, I am just reading this now and I got excited seeing that you'll take 5 people. THEN noticed there were 3 pages Sad

I just got a Nikon D3200 for my birthday (last weekend) and I am very slowly trying I figure it out. My husband good friend has been trying to talk me through some things but he's been so busy with work I haven't seen him. I'm pretty much clueless to how to take the pictures I want and don't want this camera to be used solely in on the auto setting.

DH bought me a laptop for my birthday to go with it so I can 'edit' my pictures. Same friend got me a copy of Lightroom. He works in digital animation and has copies of all the software. I'm also getting adobe but will still have I wait for him to show me how to use them all!

This thread would have been perfect for me. I will continue to lurk Smile I'm sure you're an awesome teacher and I will learn new things!!

Thank you for 'paying it forward'. Your generosity is very appreciated! I read your thread on how far you've come and I was so inspired. I feel the same way you did in e beginning and not wanting to miss the moment. I've been experimenting and trying different apertures and shutter speeds but seem to miss the mark.

I'm so happy that there's interest in this! Here's what I'll do: I absolutely won't take more than 7, but I'll take marymoonu (I'm so sorry I forgot your name!) and Lynsey. If Jo never responds then one more can come on in.

And one thing I would encourage the other regulars on the board to do is something similar Smile I love that we're getting some fresh faces on the board!

My super busy season of the year is starting to dwindle, and while I do not have the skills Stephanie has shown, I"m willing to put in my $0.02 worth to anyone who wants to give it a go. I can take a group of 3 or so, if any other lurkers would like to come out of the shadows and play. Biggrin

Hi Smile
I'm back after a couple days off over the long weekend, and this thread exploded Smile If there's still room, I'm totally in!

GiGi, are you still willing to put a group together? Looks like you have 2 interested in a new group Smile I'd do it myself, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to give everyone the attention they need.

Gigi, I'll be your third if you'll have me! I feel like my camera is only picking up dust, and when I do pick it up all my images seem so lackluster.

I'm still game, so it looks like group #2 is forming!

I'll post us another thread so we can do intros and get the ball rolling.

So glad there is interest - nice to see the board traffic picking up.

Let's have some fun!

Stephanie posted on my BB so I thought I would see if there was any more room?
I have a Canon Rebel T3i. I got it almost a year ago and had an hour instruction from a local photog, but honestly she did landscapes vs. kiddos. I honestly just fumble around with the camera since I dont take note as to what works and what doesnt. Would love to take better pictures, and I have zero editing skills. But i havent tried either. So if there is room- YAY- if not I will lurk around for the next group!

Jump in, post a quick bio so that our new folks can get to know you a bit and then jump in as much as you can!
