Default Camera purchase question from a non-photographer

Ok, the non-photographer part is a little too kind to myself - I sorta stink at this stuff.

Someone recommended the Nikon Coolpix S8000 - is that a good place to start? Mostly we want a good camera we can take lots of pics of the kids with. Any other recommendations out there? I want to spend under $300.

    Thanks!

I just wanted to say sorry for all the non-replies. You aren't being ignored. It is just that most of the ladies on here have a dSLR cameras and don't know much about point and shoot models. Hopefully someone will chime in that can answer your question.

Thanks, I figured that. But one of the ladies from my birth board suggested posting my question here for some help. I know I'm not advanced like all of you great ladies but I have to start somewhere! Thanks!

I don't know that particular model (or many, aside from what I own). But http://www.dpreview.com/ is a wonderful place to check out reviews and insight from people who really know cameras.
I'm super happy with my point-and-shoot- a panasonic lumix lx3 (runs for about 350).

    Good luck!

I love my Canon Powershot and have 2 different models. It is easy to use and fits in my back pocket, diaperbag or purse. It is super durable and has withstood being dropped, sat on and drooled on and is great for the beach, theme parks and everyday fun. I keep one in my purse all the time!
