Amanda- Cute photos. Looks like a fun day picking blueberries! YUM! You said you have the 50mm 1.8 lens? I would try to use that more. I think you'll really see a difference. When it's midday and sunny, I would try to move them into the shade as much as possible for photos. Their hats in all 3 are blown and pretty distracting. Otherwise, the exposure looks ok, a little underexposed on her face in the first 2. I rarely shoot full sun because it's too frustrating for me.

So my advice is to drag your kiddos out into the shade and get your 50mm lens on that camera

Amanda ... full sun is TOUGH but I think you did a pretty good job considering the circumstances.

#1. the showdow on her face is unfortunate. the rest of the photo looks fairly well exposed, aside from her hat. I like that you got down low enough that we can clearly see her eyes. you might try duplicating the background and fixing the exposure on her face in the new layer so that it's closer to the way her arms look and then mask the rest of the photo back in.

#2. I love this fun shot! I wish you had been a little lower, but then again, you might not have been able to see as much of her face (the bowl might get in the way). I love the emotion though. Exposure looks even better here. Her face, while in shadow, is not much darker than her arms, so it doesn't seem an issue. And I only see one blown spot on her hat. BTW ... I keep thinking there is a spider on her hat and it freaks me out (I am seriously afraid of spiders).

#3. this is a pretty sweet moment. It's a little over exposed, but not terribly so. On this one, for sure, I wish you had been a little lower - at the same eye level as your little cutie. I think it would take this sweet shot and make it really sing.

BTW ... those berries look YUMMY!

    TFS!

Gigi that is an embroidered spider on her hat, it is from a hockey tournament that takes place close to Halloween. Thanks for the CC, I'll have to try the PP on the one of DD1 with a duplicate layer.

I took these a few days ago since Ryken was in a semi-cooperative mood All with my 35mm, iso 200, f 2.8, ss 1/500-640.

    2. The only one I had him put his glasses on for. I just hate the glare and that I can't see his pretty eyes as well

4.Elbow chop and foldy blanket in the corner. I tried a different crop to get rid of the bunchy blanket part, but it seemed too centered. I dunno.

You have the cutest boys, Katie! How nice of your oldest to cooperate. Here's my thoughts ...

    1. Focus looks GREAT! Love the composition and the pop of color that the blanket gives. He looks a little green to me. I am at work, though, so take that w/ a grain of salt. I'm super impressed that you have such even shade - not a touch of dappled light like in the background. SWEET!

#2. the glare sucks. I have found when taking DH's pics (since he wears glasses) that it helps to get below him. That's not 100% effective, but I do find I get more good shots w/out the glare on his glasses when I shoot from below. Everything else about this one, I love! He doesn't look green here. Focus looks really nice. As for composition, he's fairly centered both horizontally and vertically, but honestly, I think it works here - he is front and center for this shot and I really like it.

#3. LOVE THIS ONE!!!! Your conversions are always great, but this is a true winner. His eyes look so bright. I will say that he looks older here, so maybe that's not so great. They grow too fast. The hand chop might be an issue for some, but since I am drawn to his eyes, it's not a big deal for me.

#4. I don't mind the bunchy blanket - the dof minimizes that - but the elbow chop is more noticeable than the hand chop in #3. And since he is squinting more in this one, the eyes don't pull me as much either. Great conversion though (no surprise there).

#5. was he actually sleeping here or just pretending? The hand/arm position looks uncomfortable to me. Another winning conversion. And it's a sweet moment. I think I would like a landscape crop though - even though it would mean a double hand chop. Would have to see it to be sure though. I can see why you like it though.

    TFS, Katie!

I hope it's ok that I give CC here. There aren't as many of y'all and I would like to help out. Just let me know if you don't want me to!

Amanda- First off- full sun is sooooo tough!
    1. Yes, her hat is blown here. I do wish she was a bit happier looking too.
    2. This is a cute moment. I wish you would have bent down some and had her look at you! Too cute though!
    3. She looks like she enjoyed it too! It is a bit overexposed.

    Katie-
    1. To me he looks yellow. IT's more of his skin than anything.
    2. Even with the glare I love it! I think it's adorable! He's not as yellow here.
3 & 4- Yes the elbow chop is unfortunate, but I love your B&Ws and these are great. I personally like 3 better.
    5. Not mommy goggles! I think it's a cute capture, but I would like to see it horizontally..

Thanks, ladies! Sadie (and anyone else)- you're always welcome to cc our group too!

I re-edited the first one. How does the color look now?

    IMG_6007-2 by willis2485, on Flickr

I tried the 'sleeping' one of him in a landscape crop, and it just didn't seem to work. There wasn't enough room and seemed like too tight of a crop. I did do a landscape crop on a similar one that I think works. What you guys think?

Eta: I just noticed a stain on the blanket....definitely have to clone that

Katie ... the color looks better in this edit, but his face still seems a bit green to me. May just be my monitor though (yes, I'm back at work). I like the landscape crop on this new b&w. And that stain shouldn't be too hard to clone out.

    TFS!!!

I took a few photos this weekend that I had hoped to post here today, but work got in the way and they are still on the computer.

In the meantime, though, I'll post a few of these. Logan has been willing to let me take a few snaps here and there as I try to find the areas in the new house with the best light (the boys promised me some family photos this month). And while these are mostly just snapshots, I'd love your thoughts on the light since that was their primary purpose anyway.

    1. 50mm f/2.5 ss=1/100 iso=400

This one was taken in my cmputer room. It was taken at about 5pm in a west-facing room. I should have pulled the sheer curtains over the blinds so that he didn't get the stripes of light across his head like that.

    2. 50mm f/2.2 ss=1/50 iso=400

This is that same room as in #1. 2pm on a very bright sunny day this time. Blinds and sheer curtains were both closed. I know I blew out large portions of this one. I'm liking the directional light though and hope to use it more effectively in the future.

    3. 50mm f/2.8 ss=1/400 iso=200

    4. 50mm f/2.8 ss=1/200 iso=200

    5. 50mm f/2.8 ss=1/200 iso=200

These last 3 were taken on back porch area. East-facing at around 5pm. Full shade.

I know the vignette is too heavy in #4. I think the DOF is too shallow as well. I just really loved the color of that middle bloom. And this is as close as I can get w/ my 50mm - no macro lens or converter for me yet.

Anyway ... there's my set for this week. I hope to have something more exciting than snaps next week.

    Take care!

    1. I like the comp of this and I even really like the light streaks- I really like lifestyle photography, so it suits my taste Since he's showing his lego creation, I wish it were it focus as well.

    2. This one definitely shows some of his personality! Love it! I agree, you have some nice directional lighting going on in this one and #1!

    3. I have exactly 1 type of flower in our new yard, so I'm jealous of all your variety I think I would like this better with a different perspective. The pointy parts of the plant being a little in focus as well as the flower bother me. My eyes don't know where to focus.

    4. Yup, vignette seems a little strong. You got a fantastic bokeh! I almost wish there weren't the 2 flowers in the background.

    5. I don't mind the shallow dof on this, I do think a tighter crop would work better though.

I really struggle with flower/nature photography, so you've inspired me to take some shots other than my kids for this week
