Hi ladies. I'm slowly getting back to things. Looks like I am not the only one struggling to get online at the moment. :)
#1 is by far my favourite of the sunset shots. I love the clarity of the clouds and ray. The colour has a dreamy kind of sensation to it. I think I would rather not see the tree to the left. It gives some perspective, however, distracts a little from the beautiful sunset.
#2 I don't like as much. The colour and clarity aren't quite on par with the first picture. Plus, I find the other shrubs, etc distracting.
#3 This doesn't do a lot for me but good on you for attempting silhouettes. I haven't even attempted yet. This one might have worked better if it was in landscape orientation with him facing slightly out. Not so much that you loose the outline of his facial features but enough that we feel he is looking out at something.
#2 This is very cute. Great clarity. Composition not completely doing it for me, but is ok. If we either had eye contact or could see what he was looking at might have been a little better. ALthough, he almost looks pensive which saves it a little.
#3/4 I think the prefer the second out of the two, though it is a close call. I like being able to see those fine details that you captured.
Is it ok if I post as it is still Saturday in US.. just. These are photos a friend asked me to take (not professional, a favour). In both cases had severe limitations (dark room, yellow room, little to no natural light, limited space which was further hindered by need to 'keep out of the way', etc.) Composition wise I don't think there was much else I could do in the space. CC everything else and any suggestions on how I can fix VERY much appreciated :)

Big windows in this room but was a overcast day with dull light. Plus, for whatever reason, it was as if the light couldn't really penetrate the room............
Those roses are so vibrant! Really beautiful. I wish they were both taken on the table, rather than with the towel underneath them, and that the leaf above the towel in #1 wasn't there... but that could be easily cloned out. I love the bouquet in #2 and how vibrant and wonderful the colours are. I would've removed the towel, like I said, and tried to get more of it against the darker background than split between a dark and a light background.
#3 is nice for showing the 'studio' and I actually like the light in a way. I do feel like I'd like to see some shots from other angles, as this one is pretty straight-on and not really doing a lot for me. But as a photo that represents a studio, it captures it well.
Yall will have to please give me a pass. Had surgery last week and just haven't been able to catch up (or take many pics). The good news is it was the VERY end of my cancer surgeries/treatments! :woohoo:
Anyway, hopefully I can be back now!
Sorry I haven't been around much in the past few days. We had company this weekend. Then my kids have really put me in a foul mood with their behavior. I'm determined to turn it around today, though ;)
#1 - I agree with Tracy about the towel. I think that it would have been ok with the towel, if the tag wasn't sticking out the way that it is. These types of shots are all about the details. I definitely get where you're going with this one.
#2 - Great bokeh on this one (and the last too!). It makes the roses stand out very nicely. I'm just in agreement with Tracy on these, so I don't have too much to add :)
#3 - This one isn't doing a lot for me, unfortunately. She's underexposed. There weren't any windows on the other side of the room, were there. That's probably your light problem. I think that in a situation like this, where the backs are to the window, you either need to really crank up the ISO and lower your AP, OR strap on a speedlite to get your extra light (because I know it's not possible with every camera and lens to get the settings you need). I struggle a lot with situations like this with my current camera. It's a limitation that I have to deal with by using my speedlite, unfortunately.
Okay, I bet you have seen a couple of these on the anniversary thread, but I'd love to offer them up for CC. Please feel free to burst my mommy goggles, because I'm in love with these ;)
I did find it difficult to find the light for them, though. I have this big, open window in my dining room, and we don't have a dining room table yet, so I've been trying to use the space as much as I can for pictures for the time being lol!
So, that's my pullback. If you have any suggestions on placement for a setup like this, I'd love to hear them. I feel like I've been up-lighting a lot.
I don't have the settings right off hand, since they were stripped, but I can dig them up if needed.

#1 is my fave. It's a sweet, real, genuine moment with wonderful expressions, and I LOVE the hand-holding!
#2 is really great, just too bright, I think.
#3 isn't really working for me. The shadows seem a bit too strong somehow. The directional light on their faces is great, but the shadows on the floor somehow detract from the overall effect for me.
I didn't even notice the shadows on the floor! You're right though. I think that if I pull them away from the window a little, the shadows would have been a little less noticeable. I'll have to give these another try. I'm thinking the shadowing is a little too dramatic for a sweet moment.
Thanks ladies. The first two were from a floristry class, so the towels were part of the work station. I agree that it would have looked better without them but I couldn't move them. Steph, the windows you can see in #3 are the only windows in the room and were the only light source other than a small light. The room was deep but, as it was a still life class I was limited in where I could stand and then how I composed so that I didn't include the person posing. The walls were yellow and the roof a weird cream colour with lots of wood. I tried using the speedlite and bouncing but the pictures became really yellow. I don't know enough about the speedlite to deal with this yet.
#1 - LOVE. I'd love a photo like this of my children. I'd have it stretched on a canvas and prominently displayed. The light is obviosuly coming from our left which means their bodies are quite bright and Carson's face is a little darker than his brother. It isn't enough that it worries me at all though. The composition and light means that my eyes are drawn mostly to Jackson.
#2 This one is a little bright for me and doesn't have the same connection as #1, which i why it isn't my favourite. I like the composition and clarity. Carson's shadow is over Jacksons arm and shoulder but I only noticed because I was looking for it. It doesn't effect this photo for me, but I pointed it out for future reference as if the light was brighter it would have more impact.
#3 There are a lot of shadows in this one that I find distracting. The hand holding is very sweet, however, the angle and / or composition is not as strong as with your other photos.
