Hmm...I'm a terrible judge of distance, but I'd say he was about 8-10 feet from the background? Our yard is set up wonderfully for getting some great bokeh. We have trees in the yard creating shade, and then the very back drops down a steep slope with more trees down in the ravine.

Since Tracy hasn't posted yet, I hope it's okay that I post this other one that I took on the same day. Is the color better? I didn't touch the color temp from right out of the camera.

I am really wondering if I shouldn't comment on color - I saw this on my iPad a minute ago and thought the color looked REALLY good - it still does look good on my laptop, but not as good as it looked on the iPad...?

At any rate, I do think the temp/exposure look better here! This picture lacks a little of that golden light that the first ones have, but skin tones look truer to life.

How do you get your kids to look at you?!

I really like the colour in that last one, Steph! (And yeah, wow, I do NOT know how you get so many shots of your kids looking at you!!)

I really have not taken much this past week, a little busy and extra tired. But here's one from last week that I'd sure love feedback on. It's a little different and I'm wondering how other people 'see' it. (White in background is intentionally blown; I checked and it appears that nothing else is blown, even though some of her skin looks pretty hot.)

    ISO 1600 (should've lowered it), f5.0, SS 1/320, FL 55mm

    TIA!

This is really cute, Tracy! I wonder if she had been facing the light if that would have worked better (regarding that she seems to be shadowed), but I obviously have no idea what your background would have been then...and looks like you took this as she was playing/climbing, which I can never seem to duplicate if I try...so all that said, good job capturing the moment! Blown background doesn't bother me. Looks like some nice light in her eyes. It does look a little grainy due to the ISO, I'm sure, but still a cute photo!

I see what you're going for with the blown background, but I think it would have worked better if the blue part wasn't there. Does that make any sense? I think that her face is a bit too shadowed. It looks like more of a "spur of the moment" shot, but if you were going to try this again, maybe some sort of reflector positioned toward her face would help that. You maybe could try dodging, but I don't know if GIMP has that or not.

BUT! I think this is an adorable shot! I love your comp, the way she's holding on to the pole, and the look on her face. She looks so proud of herself!

Tracy, it's a cute shot. I'm having a problem with the lighting. Looks like your shooting from inside and she's halfway inside. You can see the light on her face is hitting both sides and leaving the middle in shadow. I would either try dodging more light evenly on her face or next time shooting from a slightly different angle. Maybe angle more to the left or right, so the light isn't being hit fully on both sides of her face? The blown background is nice and soft, so no problems there. And I actually kind of like the blue of the background.

    Thanks for the CC, ladies.

I am eliminating contractions from this post due a keyboard problem... no time to sort it out at the moment, but hopefully it will be fixed by my next post!!! Sorry if I sound weird!

I did not set up this shot at all, and could not have taken it from another angle. And yet I like the way it turned out. I do not know, perhaps it is just me, but I sometimes like these types of shots that are a little unusual in their lighting, etc. As long as the face is well-enough lit, that is. But I know that this shot is not good, per se, and yet I was curious what others would think.

The blue in the background is kind of interesting to me too... I feel like it adds an unusual symmetry. So it is nice to hear Jennifer likes it too, and it is not just me! But I think the others I have showed this shot to also have not liked it much, soooooo... definitely one of those things that everyone sees differently! And that is always helpful for me to know, too... what others see and like in things... or see and do NOT like!

Hopefully I will have a better shot or two to share for CC next time!
